Chapter 77: Chapter 77: the afternoon plan

The afternoon sunlight filtered gently through the tall windows of the Community Partnership Office.

The six students gathered once more around the large conference table.

Maps.

Reports.

Partnership records.

Community requests.

Their notebooks, considerably fuller than they had been only a few hours earlier, now lay open before them.

Mrs. Margaret Collins looked around the table with quiet satisfaction.

"I trust everyone enjoyed lunch."

A few smiles answered her.

"I’m glad."

She folded her hands neatly.

"I’ll leave this room to all of you."

"If you need any records or assistance..."

"Just let one of us know."

Vivienne rose slightly from her chair.

"Thank you again, Mrs. Collins."

"We’ve learned far more this morning than I expected."

Mrs. Collins smiled warmly.

"That’s what we’re here for."

With that...

She quietly excused herself, leaving the six students to begin their first real planning session.

For a brief moment...

No one spoke.

The atmosphere had changed.

The morning had been spent learning.

Now...

It was time to decide.

Vivienne took a slow breath.

"I think..."

"...rather than trying to do everything at once..."

"...we should first decide what we actually need to accomplish."

Everyone nodded.

"Our proposal is about building long-term partnerships."

"So before approaching anyone..."

"We should understand where the Foundation already has strong partnerships..."

"...and where those partnerships are still missing."

Jessica nodded thoughtfully.

"That would help us identify genuine opportunities."

Oliver adjusted the papers before him.

"And prevent us from duplicating work another department is already doing."

Sophia smiled.

"It also gives us a clearer starting point."

"Exactly."

Vivienne lowered her eyes to her notes.

"Rather than everyone looking at everything..."

"...I think we should divide the work."

She looked toward Peter.

"Could you compare our existing partners with the transportation routes?"

Peter nodded immediately.

"Certainly."

"Jessica..."

"Would you identify the partnership agreements due for renewal?"

"Of course."

"Oliver..."

"I’d appreciate it if you could compile a list of industries we’re currently missing."

"I’d be happy to."

"Sophia..."

"Would you organize the community requests according to priority?"

Sophia smiled.

"Leave it to me."

Finally...

Vivienne turned toward Damian.

For the briefest moment...

She hesitated.

Then smiled.

"Damian."

"I need you beside me."

Damian met her eyes.

"What would you like me to do?"

"You know this Foundation better than any of us."

"If I overlook something..."

"Or if there’s a better way to approach it..."

"I need you to tell me."

She smiled apologetically.

"I don’t need to know everything."

"I just need to know who does."

"And right now..."

"That’s you."

For a brief moment...

Damian simply looked at her.

A thoughtful expression crossed his face.

Ordinarily...

His experience allowed him to work quickly.

He already knew many of the answers they were searching for.

He could have reviewed reports on his own.

Spoken directly with department heads.

Prepared half the team’s findings before the afternoon was over.

Instead...

He would spend the day differently.

Not racing ahead.

But remaining beside Vivienne.

Answering questions.

Explaining procedures.

Waiting whenever she needed time to think.

Allowing her to arrive at each decision herself.

It would undoubtedly take longer.

Yet...

For some reason...

He found that he didn’t mind at all.

A faint smile touched his lips.

"...Very well."

"I’m at your disposal."

Across the table...

Peter’s pencil paused.

Jessica looked up from the renewal records.

Their eyes met.

Only for an instant.

Both understood the same thing.

Damian Blackwood who was know for preferring efficiency was choosing the slower path.

Then...

Without another word...

They quietly returned to their work.

Vivienne smiled.

"Thank you."

"All right."

"Let’s begin."

Almost immediately...

The room settled into a quiet rhythm.

Peter spread a transportation map across one end of the table, comparing routes with the Foundation’s existing business partners.

Jessica reviewed renewal agreements, marking those that would soon require follow-up.

Oliver categorized businesses by industry, searching for sectors the Foundation had yet to approach.

Sophia organized community requests according to urgency, grouping neighborhoods with similar needs.

Meanwhile...

Vivienne and Damian worked side by side.

Every few minutes...

Vivienne paused over another report.

"Damian..."

"What exactly does this notation mean?"

He leaned over slightly.

"It indicates seasonal participation."

"They only contribute during harvest months."

She nodded, making another note.

A little later...

"What about this?"

"Those agreements are coordinated through another department."

"If we’re interested..."

"I can introduce you after we’ve finished here."

"Perfect."

"Let’s add that to our list."

Without realizing it...

Their discussion gradually found its rhythm.

Vivienne asked the questions.

Damian quietly filled in the gaps.

Not by deciding for her.

Not by leading.

Simply by making sure she had every piece of information she needed to make the decision herself.

And little by little...

The project began taking shape.

Nearly two hours later...

The conference table remained covered with maps.

Reports.

Renewal agreements.

Transportation routes.

Community requests.

Oliver was the first to break the silence.

"I think I’ve found something."

Everyone looked up.

He turned one of the reports toward the center of the table.

"Most of our existing business partners belong to the same handful of industries."

He pointed to several neatly marked columns.

"Supermarkets."

"Bookstores."

"Florists."

"Tailors."

"Pharmacies."

"We have strong partnerships with all of them."

He paused.

"But..."

"There are very few independent bakeries."

Peter immediately looked over from the transportation map.

"Which matches Lady Beaumont’s proposal."

"If we’re hoping to recover usable surplus food..."

"Bakeries are among the most promising places to begin."

Jessica nodded.

"They produce fresh goods every day."

"And any surplus has to be dealt with quickly."

"If we establish regular collection..."

"It benefits both the businesses and the communities."

Sophia glanced at her own notes.

"Several neighborhoods have also requested more consistent food assistance."

She pointed toward three neighboring districts.

"They’re close enough that one field visit could cover all three."

Peter traced the existing transportation routes.

"The Foundation already travels through these districts several times each week."

"If partnerships are established here..."

"The current routes could easily accommodate regular collections."

Vivienne listened quietly.

One by one...

The pieces came together.

Not because she had found every answer herself.

But because everyone around the table had contributed something she hadn’t seen.

She smiled.

"I think..."

"...we’ve found our starting point."

No one disagreed.

She turned to a fresh page.

At the top she wrote:

Week One

Beneath it...

She carefully listed their objectives.

• Identify local bakeries with potential surplus suitable for regular collection.

• Meet the Foundation’s community coordinators assigned to the three selected districts.

• Observe how current food distribution operates.

• Determine whether existing transportation routes can support future collections.

She looked around the table.

"Does anyone think we’ve missed anything?"

A brief silence followed.

Then Damian spoke.

"One thing."

Everyone turned toward him.

"If we’re asking businesses to become long-term partners..."

"We should understand their perspective before approaching them."

Vivienne nodded.

"What do you suggest?"

"We visit."

"Not to present the proposal."

"Not yet."

"Just to observe."

"See how they operate."

"Their busiest hours."

"Their quieter hours."

"Their routines."

"If we understand their work first..."

"We’ll know how to make our proposal work for them as well."

Vivienne smiled.

"I like that."

She added one final line beneath the others.

Observe before proposing.

She looked over the page one final time.

Every objective now had a purpose.

Every purpose...

Someone responsible for carrying it forward.

She smiled.

"I think we have enough to begin."

No one disagreed.

She glanced at the small calendar tucked inside her notebook.

"Tomorrow’s Sunday..."

Her eyes moved around the table.

"I imagine everyone already has plenty waiting for them this week."

Peter laughed knowingly.

"Preliminary examinations."

Oliver let out a dramatic sigh.

"I was hoping everyone had forgotten."

Soft laughter spread around the room.

Even Jessica smiled.

"The Foundation has always planned around the University’s academic calendar."

Vivienne nodded.

"Then let’s use the week to prepare."

"We’ll continue gathering information whenever we have time after classes."

"But our first field visit..."

She tapped the notebook gently.

"...will be next Saturday."

Again...

No one objected.

The coming week would belong to lectures.

Assignments.

And examinations.

Preparing well...

Was every bit as important as beginning quickly.

Damian considered the schedule for a moment.

"I’ll coordinate with the Transportation Office."

"We’ll use one of the Foundation vehicles."

Peter nodded.

"That’ll make meeting the community coordinators much easier."

Jessica agreed.

"And it’s the appropriate way to conduct an official Foundation visit."

Damian inclined his head.

"Exactly."

Vivienne looked around the table one last time.

Six students.

One project.

One shared purpose.

She closed her notebook.

"Our first field visit."

"Our first potential partners."

"Our first real step."

A quiet smile touched her lips.

"One step at a time."

For a brief moment...

No one spoke.

Then...

Almost unconsciously...

Everyone around the table smiled.

It felt...

Exactly like the right place to begin.
