Chapter 335: Chapter Three Hundred And Thirty Four

The silence came first. It was not a normal silence. It was a complete stop of all sound, movement, and life. Inside the carriage, every character froze. The carriage stopped moving. The wheels stopped turning. Every small movement in the world stopped at once.

Camilla sat on the floor of the carriage, holding Damon in her arms. She looked at his pale, still face. Panic filled her heart, but time itself seemed stuck. She pulled Damon close to her chest. She put her hand on his head and softly caressed his hair.

"Damon," she whispered. Her voice was weak and full of pain.

She hugged him with all the strength left in her body. Tears began to flow down her cheeks. The tears mixed with the dried blood on her face.

Then, the world began to break.

Small cracks appeared on the stone road beneath the carriage. The cracks grew wider and wider. The ground beneath them started to shake with violent force, just like an earthquake. Large rocks split open. Deep in the distance, tall trees began to pull out of the dirt, their roots snapping like dry twigs. Dirt and dust filled the air. Everything was falling apart. The entire world was destroying itself because the story was ending in ruin.

Camilla fell to her knees on the shaking floor. She wrapped her arms around Damon. She bowed her head, squeezed her eyes shut, and cried out into the dark, empty space.

"Please," she begged, her chest heaving as she sobbed. "Please, give me another chance! Don’t end it like this! I will fix it! I beg you!"

She pleaded over and over. She offered her own life if it meant saving his. She held Damon tight, refusing to let go even as the ground beneath them seemed to melt away.

Then, after one long, terrifying minute, everything went silent again.

The shaking stopped instantly. The sky cleared, turning back into the soft glow of late evening. The bright moon became visible behind thin clouds. The huge cracks in the road closed up, mending themselves as if they had never opened. The uprooted trees sank back into the rich soil, standing tall and strong again.

Time began to move once more.

Inside the carriage, Camilla suddenly felt a warm, faint puff of air against her neck. She gasped. It was Damon’s breath. He was alive.

Before she could process her relief, the carriage snapped back into motion. The horses outside ran at full speed, continuing from where they stopped. The carriage lurched forward violently, throwing Camilla and Damon across the small space toward the door.

Camilla saw the hard wooden wall coming closer. She did not want Damon to get hurt again. She didn’t want him to him to put stress on his injury. With a quick movement, she twisted her body around, putting herself between Damon and the door.

BANG!

Camilla’s back slammed hard against the door. A second later, Damon’s body crashed into her chest.

"Ugh!" Camilla groaned in sharp pain. The impact knocked the air right out of her lungs, and her spine throbbed with a dull ache. But she did not drop Damon. She held him tightly against her body, keeping him safe from the hard wood.

Outside, the air was filled with loud, desperate shouting. Kade was sitting on the high driver’s seat outside, pulling on the leather reins with all his strength.

"Whoa! Calm down! Calm down!" Kade screamed at the top of his lungs, his voice raw from terror. "Hold on! Calm down!"

The horses neighed loudly, their hooves beating against the stone road. Inside the carriage, the driver lay slumped in a corner, unconscious. On the floor nearby, the captured assassin groaned in pain, his arms clenching his bleeding leg.

Camilla panted heavily. Her body hurt everywhere, but she ignored the pain. She used every bit of strength left in her arms and legs to lift Damon off the floor. She dragged him up and placed his limp body onto the soft bench seat.

She looked at her hand. It was dry, sticky, and covered in blood. She used the back of her dirty hand to wipe the warm tears from her eyes, leaving dark streaks across her skin.

She sat next to Damon and pulled his upper body into her lap. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders, holding his head close to her chest. She leaned down and pressed her lips against his cold forehead.

"Thank you," she murmured, her voice trembling with intense emotion. She kissed his forehead again, holding back new tears.

"Thank you so much. For giving me another chance."

Suddenly, the voice came back again. It echoed inside her head.

"Don’t waste this chance," The voice whispered clearly. "Do a good job and end this story."

Camilla closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She pressed her lips to Damon’s forehead once more. She gently caressed his pale cheek with her thumb, feeling the faint warmth of his skin.

"I will," Camilla said out loud, her voice firm and full of promise. "I will not fail."

For a long time, the carriage moved through the dark night in silence. The only sounds were the wooden wheels turning on the road, the rhythmic rocking of the carriage and the frantic galloping of the horses. Camilla sat still, holding Damon. She kept her hand over his chest, listening carefully to his slow, ragged breathing. Every breath he took was proof that they were still here, that the world had not ended.

She looked out the small glass window. The trees passed by quickly, and then she saw the familiar iron gates of the grand mansion. They were home.

Standing near the main entrance of the house was Murry. He was waiting near the driveway, enjoying the calm evening air. When he heard the sound of fast hooves, he smiled, relieved to see the carriage returning.

However, as the carriage pulled into the courtyard, Murry’s smile quickly vanished.
