Chapter 29: Chapter 29: Name Under Stone :( 18+)

The morning after Korr’s early return, the questions about Ral’s death tightened.

Vara pulled every man who had spoken with him in the three days before the clean cut. They were brought one by one into the deep chamber under first-band guard.

Most gave the same careful answers: Ral had complained about the mixed watches, had drunk too much fermented berry, had muttered that the first band was being given too much of the Matron’s favor.

None admitted to seeing the hand that opened his throat.

One name surfaced more than once.

A second-band fighter named Kel, lean and quiet, who had trained close to Drak since the early days of Elka’s collecting.

Two men placed Kel near the water channel after the midpoint of the night watch.

One claimed he had seen Kel walking the internal path alone when he should have been on the eastern count.

The statements were not enough for the pit, but they were enough for the dark caves.

Kel was taken under heavier guard.

Elka was summoned again.

She came with Sura at her shoulder, the same tall, powerful presence as before long braids heavy with bone and feather, fur cloak open over the strong curves of her body, dark eyes already calculating the room.

She listened to the names without interruption.

When Vara finished, Elka spoke.

"Kel walked many paths.

So did half the second band before you put first-band leads on every count.

A man seen near the water channel is not a man proven to have opened a throat.

You are building a story from shadows while the Hollow Kin still leave bones on the high trails."

Vara’s voice stayed cold.

"Shadows are all we have until a hand is shown.

Kel remains under stone until the shadows clear or deepen.

Your circle will continue to walk the mixed counts exactly as ordered.

Any further quiet absences will be treated as the same kind of silence that killed Ral."

Elka’s gaze moved to Korr, lingering on the newest shallow cut across his ribs and the way he stood at Vara’s shoulder.

"The Matron’s gladiator keeps bringing proof from the ridges.

The tribe sees the bones.

They also see that the internal cuts continue while the outer watches stay tight.

Both things cannot remain true forever without someone deciding which fear matters more."

She left with Sura.

The bone ornaments at her hips clicked softly with each step.

Gron waited until the chamber was clear. "Kel is a thread, not a rope.

Pull it too hard and it may show only that Elka’s circle knows how to cut its own loose ends.

Leave it and the tribe will decide the Matron is afraid to finish what the clean cut started. Either way, the Hollow Kin will smell the choice."

Vara’s fingers rested on the growing collection of finger bones on the table. "Then we pull carefully.

Korr remains on the northern rotations.

The mixed watches stay under first-band command.

And Kel stays under stone until the next clear sign appears whether it comes from the ridges or from inside the caves."

That night the claiming in her chamber carried the weight of both fronts.

Vara did not take him straight to the furs. She pushed him back against the painted wall, stripped the loincloth away, and dropped to her knees.

Her hands spread his thighs.

She leaned in and dragged her tongue slowly over his stones, then lower, pressing firmly against the tight ring of his ass.

She licked him there with the same focused authority she brought to every other claim wet, deliberate strokes that made his breath catch and his cock rise heavy against his stomach.

She worked him open with her tongue until his hips shifted despite himself, then pulled back and looked up at him.

"Every part that returns from the ridges," she said. "Even this."

She rose, wrapped one hand around his cock, and began to milk him with slow, firm strokes.

Her grip was tight, thumb sweeping the head on every upward pull, the rhythm controlled and denying.

Her other hand stayed between his legs, two fingers pressing and circling the place her tongue had claimed, adding pressure in time with the milking.

She edged him twice, slowing when his breath turned rough, then starting again until his thighs trembled.

When she finally let him finish it was with a steady, relentless milking that drew every thick pulse from him across her fist and onto the stone at their feet.

She watched it happen, then brought her fingers to her mouth and tasted him the same way she tasted the blood of his wounds.

Only after that did she push him down onto the furs, climb over him, and sink onto his still-sensitive cock.

She rode him with deep, rolling strokes, hands braced on his chest, eyes locked on his.

"The ridges still answer to the men I send," she murmured.

"The internal knives will find the hand that opened Ral’s throat before they find more of ours.

Stay the edge I need on both fronts."

She came with a low, shaking cry, body clamping around him, and the pull of it dragged a second, weaker release from him while she kept moving through it.

Afterward she lay against his chest, fingers tracing the newest cut on his ribs.

"Kel is under stone," she said quietly.

"The Hollow Kin are still measuring.

Elka is still waiting for the questions to give her room.

Two fronts, and both remain sharp.

Rest while the quiet holds.

It will not hold long."

Outside, the mixed watches paced under the harder count.

In the lower caves Kel waited under heavier guard, the thread of Ral’s death still only half-pulled.

In another fire-lit space Elka sat with Sura, Drak, and the core of her circle.

The bone beads in her long braids caught the firelight as she listened to the low voices.

The name Kel was already being weighed for whatever story would serve when the next quiet moment arrived.

And high in the ridges, older eyes had seen the first band come and go once more, leaving more of their own dead and more proof in the valley below.

The Hollow Kin did not rush.

They had measured the cost again.

They watched the lower caves for the next sign that the internal cut had opened something wider than one man’s throat.
