Chapter 36: Chapter 36: Into, the Smoke :)

The probe left at first light with twenty first-band fighters and no second-band among them.

Korr walked at the head of the column.

Bor moved at his right shoulder, eyes already reading the higher ground.

The rest followed in a loose, disciplined diamond scouts ahead and on the flanks, the core strength in the center, two men trailing far enough back to catch any sign of pursuit from the valley side.

~~~~
Weapons were wrapped against the gleam. Water skins were full.
No one spoke above a murmur.
Behind them the valley remained under the triple count.
Vara had kept the first-band leads on every watch.
Elka’s circle provided the numbers and kept the public peace.
The unfinished threads Kel under stone, the missing eastern men, the bead inside the counted post had been deliberately set aside.
The smoke in the north had taken the center of every calculation.
They climbed through the familiar lower trails by mid-morning and reached the secondary saddle by early afternoon.
The air changed as they moved deeper.
The ordinary scents of dry grass and sun-warmed stone gave way to something sharper ash, old fire, and the faint bitterness of burned meat and hide.
The smoke columns they had seen from the valley were still rising, darker now and closer.
Bor raised a fist near a narrow defile that opened toward the deeper ridges.
The column stopped. Fresh tracks crossed the thin soil many pairs, mixed sizes, some heavy with the weight of packs.
Not a scouting party.
A movement of people.
"They are on the move," Bor said quietly. "Not toward us. Parallel.
Heading west along the high spine."
Korr scanned the broken ridgelines.
"How many?"
"Hard to say. Thirty. Maybe more.
Women and smaller prints mixed in.
Not only fighters."
That changed the meaning of the smoke.
A war band did not usually travel with its full camp.
A people shifting ground did.
They followed the sign with greater care, staying below the skyline, using the folds of the rock for cover.
The tracks led them into a wide, high basin that none of the earlier rotations had reached.
The far side of the basin still smoldered. Several large fire rings had been burned out and abandoned.
Hide scraps, cracked bones, and the blackened remains of simple shelters littered the ground.
The Hollow Kin had not only signaled.
They had broken a major camp and moved.
At the center of the abandoned ground they found the first clear message meant for whoever came after them.
A low stone cairn had been raised.
On top of it lay a single adult skull, cleaned and set to face south toward the Tribunal valley.
~~~~

Around the base of the cairn, arranged in a careful circle, were twelve finger bones, each drilled, each still carrying the faint color of relatively recent death.

No Tribunal beads this time.

Only the bones and the skull and the clear sense that the Hollow Kin wanted the lower caves to understand the scale of what had left this place.

One of the younger fighters muttered under his breath.

Bor silenced him with a look.

Korr crouched by the cairn and studied the arrangement without touching it.

"They burned the camp.

They moved the people.

They left this for us to find.

They want us to know the gathering is real and that it has already begun to move."

Bor’s voice was grim.

"West along the high spine.

If they keep that line they will come down into the northwestern approaches within two or three days.

Or they will swing wider and try the eastern cuts again with greater numbers."

Korr stood.

"We do not follow the full column.

We cut for higher ground, confirm the direction, and return before dark.

The valley needs the size and the path more than it needs us bleeding in their rear."

They climbed a nearby spur that gave a longer view to the west.

From the top the movement was clear.

A long, broken line of figures fighters, women, children, pack animals worked its way along the high trails, staying just below the skyline.

Korr counted as carefully as the distance allowed.

At least sixty. Possibly closer to eighty.

More than any previous Hollow Kin party that had tested the Tribunal’s ground. Enough to force a real fight if they came down in one body.

As they watched, a smaller group of eight or nine fighters split from the main column and turned back toward the basin toward the probe’s position.

~~~~
"Scouts," Bor said.
"They know someone is on their trail."
Korr gave the hand signal to pull back.
The probe descended the spur in disciplined silence and began the return along a different line, staying in the broken ground that offered cover.
The Hollow Kin scouts reached the basin behind them and spread out, searching the abandoned camp and the cairn.
For a time it seemed the probe had broken contact cleanly.
Then a thrown stone cracked against the rock near the trailing pair.
The ambush was small and fast six painted figures rising from a side draw the column had already passed.
Leaf-shaped blades. No war cries.
The trailing two first-band men met them with the same tight efficiency they had learned in the earlier fights.
One Hollow Kin went down immediately.
A second scored a deep cut across a Tribunal fighter’s shoulder before Bor’s spear took him through the side.
The remaining four broke contact as quickly as they had appeared and vanished into the higher rock.
~~~~

Korr did not give chase.

The wounded man was bleeding hard.

The main Hollow Kin column was still moving west.

The valley needed the report more than it needed another body count on the high trails.

They bound the shoulder wound as best they could and increased the pace of the return.

No further contact came.

By the time the valley mouth opened below them the sun was already low, and the smoke in the deeper north had thinned to a haze.

They reached the arena ledge under torchlight.

The tribe gathered fast.

Vara stood with Gron.

Elka was present with Sura and Drak, face composed, eyes already reading the wounded man and the lack of trophies.

Korr climbed the steps and spoke so every ear could hear.

"The smoke was a broken camp.

The Hollow Kin burned a major ground and moved west along the high spine with at least sixty, possibly eighty fighters and full camp together.

~~~~
They left a cairn with a skull facing our valley and twelve finger bones around it.
A small scout group turned back and hit our trailing pair.
One of ours wounded.
Two of theirs dead.
The main column is still moving.
If they keep the line they can reach the northwestern approaches in two or three days."
A heavy silence held for three heartbeats. Then the murmur began fear, calculation, the sudden understanding that the measuring parties and the bones had only been the edge of something larger.
Vara’s voice cut through it.
"The northwestern watches will be reinforced before dawn.
The first band will hold the primary line.
The second band will fill the valley and eastern counts under first-band command.
No one walks the outer paths in numbers smaller than the new count I set.
The Hollow Kin are no longer only testing. They are moving a people."
~~~~

Her gaze moved to Elka.

"Your circle will provide the numbers for the valley and eastern watches.

The command structure remains as it is.

The northwestern line belongs to the first band until the size and intention of that column are clearer."

Elka inclined her head.

"As the Matron commands."

There was no open challenge in the words.

The scale of the movement had temporarily set the internal knives aside for both women.

Later, in the deep chamber, the three of the Tribunal met with Korr present.

No new bones lay on the table this time only the weight of the numbers he had brought back.

Gron spoke first.

~~~~
"Sixty to eighty, full camp, moving west.
That is not a raiding party. That is a shift of ground.
Either they are coming down into our northwestern approaches, or they are swinging wider to come at us from a direction we have not yet hardened.
The old songs say the Hollow Kin only move their full camps when the high rock can no longer hold them or when they have decided the lower ground is ready to be taken."
Vara’s fingers rested on the bone necklace. "Then we harden every approach.
The probe confirmed the size and the path.
The next step is to meet them on ground we choose rather than ground they force.
~~~~

Korr, the first band will take the primary northwestern line at first light. Strong posts. Clear signals.

If the column turns toward us, I want the first warning to reach the valley in time to put every fighter on the stone."

Korr nodded once.

The wounded man’s blood still marked the edge of his own sleeve where he had helped bind the shoulder.

"And the unfinished threads inside the caves?" Gron asked.

"They stay unfinished for now," Vara said. "The high rock has given us a larger edge.

I will not blunt the first band’s strength on internal shadows while a full Hollow Kin camp is moving across our northern ground.
