Triple X System
Chapter 438: Overcharge
The air inside the frozen pocket of time felt thick as cold grease, every movement dragging against an invisible, static weight.
Selena’s fingernails scraped against the cold, iron plating of the landing ridge as she scrambled toward the falling brass artifact. Her immaculate gown was ruined, soaked with her own crimson blood where the Chronos Core was leeching her vitality to sustain the temporal stasis. Every second this domain held, years of her youth melted away into nothingness.
"Give it... back!" she rasped, her eyes wild, blood running freely down her chin.
Before her trembling fingers could touch the spinning silver rings of the hourglass, a heavy black boot slammed down directly onto the artifact.
Kyle stood over it, clutching his bleeding shoulder where her stiletto had bit deep. His leather coat hung in charred tatters, and his breath came in short, ragged gasps that left grey, motionless clouds in the frozen air.
"You’re killing yourself, Duchess," Kyle said, his dark eyes cold, detached, and entirely unimpressed by her noble bloodline. "And you’re going to get everyone on this ridge turned into crystal dust if you keep staring at me instead of what’s behind you."
Selena’s head snapped around.
The Rootcrystal Deer had already recovered from the initial kinetic impact. Its massive, translucent green antlers hummed with a terrifying, high-frequency spatial resonance that vibrated right through the grey stillness of time. The creature didn’t belong to the natural order; it fed on spatial distortions, and the Chronos Core was essentially a buffet of raw, compressed temporal mana.
*SCREECH!*
The beast released another crystalline roar, lowering its head as the air around its razor-sharp antlers shattered like glass. It kicked its hind hooves into the motionless sea water suspended in the air, charging straight for Selena with the speed of an avalanche.
"Get away from me, you hideous beast!" Selena shrieked.
In pure, unadulterated panic, she didn’t try to retrieve the device under Kyle’s foot. She reached out with both hands, her palms glowing with a harsh, unstable silver light, and grabbed the outer rings of the Chronos Core directly while it was still pinned beneath his boot.
"Duchess, don’t—!" Kyle warned, his eyes widening.
"I am a Grand Duchess of the Clover Council!" Selena screamed, her voice cracking as her fingernails split from the pressure. "I will not lose my daughter to abyssal filth, and I will certainly not die in a ditch at the hands of a wild monster!"
She didn’t just channel her mana into the artifact. She forcibly overcharged it, dumping her entire remaining mana pool and her very soul-essence directly into the core’s internal rune-matrix.
*CRACK!*
The brass hourglass didn’t hum this time. It let out a sound like a dying star—a sharp, deafening whine that bypassed the ears and vibrated directly inside the brain.
The silver rings around the brass body spun so fast they became a blur of white light. The grey, static world around them began to flicker violently, snapping between grey monochrome and full, vivid color like a broken film reel.
[WARNING!] Snow’s voice shrieked inside Kyle’s mind, completely abandoning her usual calm cadence. [Temporal core overcharge detected! Localized timeline collapse imminent! Spatial stability dropping past fatal parameters! Get clear of the device immediately!]
"Too late for that!" Kyle yelled, but he didn’t run away.
Instead, he looked at the charging Rootcrystal Deer, then back at Selena, who was rapidly aging before his very eyes—her pristine blue hair streaking with silver, her smooth skin wrinkling as the core devoured decades of her life in exchange for absolute temporal output.
Kyle’s lips pulled back into a grim, dark smile. "You want to throw a tantrum with time, Duchess? Let’s see how your spell handles a spatial predator."
Using the last scrap of shadow mana he could squeeze from his fractured core, Kyle thrust his hand downward, wrapping his shadow talon around the deer’s line of sight and redirecting its focus.
**"Shadow Art: Guiding Thread!"**
A thin, pitch-black line of shadow magic shot from Kyle’s blade, linking the charging Rootcrystal Deer directly to the overcharging Chronos Core in Selena’s hands!
The deer’s glowing green eyes locked onto the blinding silver sphere of overcharged time-mana. To a creature that fed on spatial fractures, the overcharged artifact was no longer just a annoyance—it was a beacon of pure, irresistible energy.
*BOOM!*
The deer didn’t slow down. It accelerated, its crystal body igniting with volatile green spatial flames as it aimed its massive antlers straight at the overcharged core!
Selena looked up just in time to see the mountain of dark-green crystal descending upon her. "No... NO!"
**"CHRONOS BURST: EPOCH SHATTER!"** Selena screamed, throwing her hands forward to discharge the overcharged temporal shockwave directly into the beast!
A tidal wave of blinding, silver time-energy erupted from the core, slamming head-on into the green spatial wave released by the charging Rootcrystal Deer!
The collision of two primordial, opposing forces—time and space—was too much for the local domain to hold.
*THOOM!*
The grey, static time-stasis didn’t just end—it shattered into millions of razor-sharp, iridescent shards that rained down across the ridge like broken glass!
Instantly, the world snapped back into full, chaotic motion.
The roaring engines of the transport ship blasted through the air. The suspended droplets of sea water slammed down like heavy rain.
Outside the collapsed temporal field, Queen Seraphina, who had been frozen mid-stride, stumbled forward as her full momentum returned. She blinked, her dark eyes quickly tracking the blinding explosion of silver and green light occurring fifty feet ahead on the landing pad.
"What in the deep..." Seraphina gasped, raising her broken trident to shield her face from the blinding flash.
Beside her, Yua’s suspended blood-whips snapped back into fluid motion, instantly coiling defensively around her body as she skidded back on the wet stone. "Kyle?!" she called out, her red eyes searching the smoke and wild mana.
In the center of the ridge, the explosion of temporal and spatial energy tore a massive crater into the metallic landing pad.
The Rootcrystal Deer’s antlers shattered upon impact with the Chronos Burst, sending thousands of dark-green crystal shards flying through the air like deadly shrapnel. The creature let out a final, agonizing screech as the silver time-wave eroded its physical body, aging its crystal structure until it turned to harmless, brittle sand that washed away in the rain.
Selena was blasted backward by the recoil of her own overcharged artifact.
She slammed hard into the side railing of her transport ship, the brass hourglass in her hand completely melting into a lump of useless, glowing slag. She slid down to the deck, coughing violently, her hair completely turned to ash-white, her strength entirely gone. The age she had traded away left her looking fragile, worn, and defeated.
"My... my vessel..." Selena whimpered, her voice thin and frail as she looked at her ruined, bleeding hands. "I am... a Grand Duchess..."
Kyle emerged from the settling dust and smoke, staggering heavily.
He was covered in fresh cuts from the flying crystal shrapnel, his leather coat practically shredded, and he was dragging his left leg. Yet, he was still moving. He stepped past the collapsed, aged Duchess without giving her a second glance, walking straight up the boarding ramp and into the open cabin of the transport ship.
Inside the quiet, cushioned cabin, Elara was slowly beginning to stir as the sleep-mana dispersed from the environmental shockwave. Her eyelashes fluttered, and she let out a soft, confused groan as she sat up on the couch, rubbing her eyes.
"Mother...?" Elara whispered weakly, her vision blurry.
Then, a shadowy figure blocked the light from the cabin door.
Elara squinted, her eyes widening as she recognized the messy dark hair, the burnt coat, and the blood-stained face staring back at her.
"Kyle...?" Elara’s voice cracked, tears instantly welling in her eyes as she pushed herself off the couch. "You’re... you’re alive? Where... where are we?"
"We’re leaving," Kyle said quietly, extending a trembling, blood-stained hand toward her. "Come on. The ship is ours now."
Elara didn’t hesitate. She ran forward, throwing her arms around his neck, nearly knocking him over from his sheer exhaustion. Kyle winced as her grip hit his broken ribs, but he held her tightly with his good arm, letting out a long, shuddering breath he felt like he’d been holding since the upper sanctuary fell.
Outside on the ridge, Yua glided up the ramp, her red eyes softening slightly as she saw Elara safe in Kyle’s arms.
Queen Seraphina followed slowly, using her broken trident as a walking stick. She stopped at the top of the ramp, looking down at the aged, defeated Duchess Selena slumping against the railing outside.
"Your ship is seized under the authority of the Abyssal Throne, Selena," Seraphina said, her voice quiet but carrying the heavy weight of absolute finality. "Return to your Clover Spire on foot, if your Archmages choose to carry you. Tell the Fifth Seat that the sea does not yield."
Selena didn’t answer. She could only watch with hollow, tear-filled eyes as Seraphina stepped into the cabin and slammed the heavy hatch shut.
Kyle stumbled into the pilot’s seat, resting his hands on the primary control sphere of the Council transport.
[Interfacing with vessel control core,] Snow reported inside his mind, her tone returning to its smooth, efficient state. [Override codes accepted via shadow-conduit bypass. Destination parameters required.]
"Just get us out of this sector," Kyle muttered, his eyelids growing impossibly heavy as the adrenaline finally began to fade from his system. "Take us deep... where the Archmages can’t follow."
[Course set for the Outer Abyssal Reefs,] Snow confirmed. [Engaging high-speed propulsion.]
Outside, the obsidian-hulled transport ship’s engines ignited with a deep, blue hum. The vessel lifted off the ruined landing pad, turned away from the burning ruins of the Wandering Springs, and shot forward into the dark, endless depths of the deep ocean, leaving the Clover Council and the bloody ridge behind.
