Chapter 452: I’ll Be Damned

  • Next Chapter

The white space offered no horizon, no shadow, and no sense of scale. Step forward or step back, the vast, milky void remained entirely unchanging. The only anchor in the infinite expanse was the dark silhouette of Kyle’s coat and the dull, ash-colored cloak of the celestial entity standing twenty yards away.

Kyle adjusted his stance, his boots making a quiet, crisp click against the solid white floor that felt like polished marble underfoot. He held his shadow blade low at his right side, the dark blade leaking small, wispy curls of ink-black mist that vanished the moment they touched the sterile atmosphere.

"So," Kyle began, his voice flat and conversational as he eyed the six pale silver rings hovering lazily behind the angel’s back. "Is this the part where you tell me I’m being put on trial, or do we skip straight to the execution?"

The mysterious celestial let out another quiet, raspy chuckle beneath its dark hood. "Trial? Don’t be ridiculous. I don’t have the patience for paperwork, and frankly, neither do you."

Without a sound or a wind-up, the celestial flickered.

It appeared instantly in front of Kyle, its right hand shooting out from beneath its heavy ash sleeve in a smooth, open-palm strike aimed directly at his chest.

Kyle’s instincts, honed by hundreds of close-quarters skirmishes, kicked in before his conscious mind could even process the movement. He pivoted his left heel, snapping his torso back while bringing his gauntlet up to deflect the blow.

*CLANG!*

The collision sounded like a heavy iron bell ringing inside a vaulted cathedral. A violent shockwave of compressed air blasted outward, but the floor beneath them didn’t crack. Kyle was forced back three full steps, his dark coat whipping around his legs, while the angel simply lowered its arm, completely unbothered by the kinetic rebound.

Kyle narrowed his eyes, his gauntlet humming softly as it re-stabilized his shadow channels. ’That strike had immense weight behind it... but no killing intent.’

"You’re pulled back," Kyle noted, raising his blade to cover his midsection. He circled slowly to the left, his gaze locked onto the blank, mirrored faceplate of the angel. "If you wanted me dead, you would have compressed the spatial void when we jumped here. You’re holding back."

"Observant," the celestial replied casually, turning in place to keep its front facing Kyle. The six geometric rings behind its back rotated with a soft, rhythmic clicking sound, like the gears of an intricate clock. "If I killed you now, I’d just be doing Michael’s dirty work for him. And I’m not in the business of making that arrogant golden bastard’s life any easier."

The mention of that name again made the dark demon energy inside Kyle’s core surge dangerously, a sharp, bitter heat spreading through his throat.

"You keep bringing up that name," Kyle said, his tone dropping an octave, heavy with a dark, burning curiosity. "Michael. Who the hell is he to you? And why should I care about some surface deity?"

The celestial stopped circling. It tilted its hooded head, the mirrored faceplate reflecting Kyle’s tense, dark figure.

"Who is he to me?" The angel paused, letting out a dry, airy sigh that sounded almost nostalgic. "A thorn in my side. A hypocrite in pristine armor. The self-appointed warden of the higher realms who thinks every irregularity in the world needs to be pruned."

It took a slow step toward Kyle, resting one hand lightly over its waist.

"As for who he is to you..." The angel lowered its voice, the casual tone sharpening into something far more profound. "I thought you would’ve been well acquainted by now. But looking at the state of your core... it seems you haven’t fully awoken yet."

"Awoken?" Kyle echoed, his brow furrowing tight. "Speak plain english. What are you talking about?"

"You have the traits, boy. You have the signature. You wear the marks of the ancient sin like a customized suit," the celestial said, waving a hand vaguely at Kyle’s arm and coat. "But your soul is still sleeping under a thick blanket of system numbers and surface stats. You think you’re just a clever guy playing a game with shadow skills and demon energy. You have no idea what’s actually sitting at the bottom of your own well."

"I know enough to slice through your vanguard," Kyle retorted coldly.

In a flash of speed, Kyle lunged forward.

’Shadow Step!’

He dissolved into a streak of black smoke, reappearing instantly in the angel’s blind spot directly behind its right shoulder. He brought his shadow blade down in a brutal, diagonal slash aimed clean at the joint where the celestial’s neck met its shoulder!

*SWOOSH!*

The blade sliced through the air, but the angel didn’t even turn around. One of the pale silver rings hovering behind its back snapped out of its rotation, intercepting the dark edge with absolute precision.

*SPARK!*

A shower of brilliant silver sparks exploded between the black blade and the metal ring. The impact felt like hitting a solid mountain of cold steel. Kyle’s right arm went completely numb from the vibration, the force of the recoil threatening to tear the hilt straight out of his grip.

"Nice angle," the angel commented mildly, still facing away from him. "Good speed, too. But like I said... you’re still relying on crude physical force."

With a casual flick of its ash sleeve, the angel turned around and thrust its open palm toward Kyle’s chest. A wave of force exploded outward, sending Kyle skidding backward across the white floor for twenty yards before he managed to dig his heel into the polished ivory surface to stop himself.

Kyle wiped a faint trail of dark blood from the corner of his lip with the back of his gauntleted hand, his chest heaving as he stared at the standing figure.

’Its speed isn’t the problem,’ Kyle thought rapidly, his mind churning through tactics. ’It’s the efficiency. Every movement it makes consumes zero wasted energy. It’s like fighting a living law of physics.’

"Let’s see how much of your foundation is actually solid," the celestial said, its tone turning serious for the first time since they had entered the void.

The angel raised both of its slender, ash-draped arms into the air.

The six pale silver rings behind its back stopped rotating instantly. They aligned themselves in a perfect, straight horizontal line above the celestial’s head, glowing with a sudden, blinding luminescence.

The surrounding white space began to warp.

It wasn’t a spatial tear or an explosion. The pure, sterile light of the white void began to pool together above the angel’s open palms, drawn in like liquid being sucked into a massive whirlpool. Thousands of glowing, silver-white threads of pure celestial spiritual essence coalesced, weaving themselves into a massive, concentrated sphere of raw orbital light.

The sphere grew rapidly—ten feet across, then twenty, then thirty—until it hovered above the angel like a miniature silver sun.

The pressure radiating from the sphere was suffocating. It wasn’t hot, nor was it heavy. It was a suffocating, absolute weight of spiritual suppression that locked Kyle’s feet to the ivory floor. His internal mana channels groaned under the sheer environmental strain, his dark shadow energy shrinking back into his core like a frightened animal.

Kyle tried to channel his shadow step to phase out of the line of fire, but his dark energy sputtered out before it could even form beneath his boots. The celestial spiritual essence saturating the air was so dense that it completely neutralized the local spatial coordinates.

He couldn’t dodge. He couldn’t phase. He couldn’t even raise a dark barrier thick enough to cushion a fraction of the incoming yield.

"This is pure celestial essence," the angel spoke, its voice echoing from every direction in the white void at once. "No light mages. No surface arrays. Just raw, unrefined spiritual authority. If your core is just a cheap imitation... this will burn it down to ash."

The angel brought its hands down in a swift, sharp arc.

"Receive."

The massive, thirty-foot sun of silver celestial essence detached from the rings, tearing across the short distance between them with terrifying, silent speed. It moved so fast that the space behind it flattened into a transparent, glass-like vacuum.

Kyle clamped his teeth together hard enough to crack his molars, his dark eyes widening as the blinding silver sphere expanded in his vision, swallowing the white space entire.

’Move, damn it!’ Kyle screamed internally, straining every muscle in his legs, pushing his demon energy to its absolute limit to break the physical paralysis locking his joints.

The sphere was five feet away. The sheer spiritual pressure cut into his skin, tearing small, microscopic lines across his cheeks, his dark coat whipping frantically in the unnatural vacuum.

Four feet.

Three feet.

Kyle instinctively threw his right hand forward, his gauntleted palm open, bracing for the absolute destruction of his physical vessel.

*TOUCH.*

The moment Kyle’s bare fingers and the dark liquid metal of his gauntlet made contact with the outer crust of the celestial sphere, time didn’t just slow down—it snapped.

The roaring, deafening hum of the spiritual essence vanished in an instant.

An eerie, absolute stillness settled over the white space. The thirty-foot mass of blinding silver light, containing enough raw celestial authority to level an entire oceanic trench, stopped dead in its tracks.

It didn’t explode. It didn’t push Kyle back an inch. It sat suspended right in front of his chest, its blazing surface pressed firmly against the palm of his right hand.

Where Kyle’s fingers touched the celestial light, the blinding silver radiance began to turn.

A deep, pitch-black, ink-like stain bled outward from his fingertips, spreading across the surface of the celestial sphere like dark dye dropping into a cup of clear water. The golden-silver spiritual essence didn’t destroy the dark stain—it absorbed it, yielding to the touch of Kyle’s hand as if recognizing a master it had been waiting for.

Kyle stood frozen, his right arm extended, his hand resting casually against the front of the massive, trapped star. He wasn’t pushing against it. He wasn’t using stamina. He was simply holding it there, his dark eyes reflecting the sudden, swirling mix of black and silver light dancing across the sphere’s surface.

A strange, ancient warmth rippled through his chest, settling deep into his soul core—a sensation that felt entirely separate from his system stats, his skills, or his demon attributes. It felt like remembering how to breathe after holding his breath for a thousand years.

Across the white expanse, the celestial entity stood completely frozen.

For the first time since they had met, the six pale silver rings behind the angel’s back didn’t rotate, click, or hover in place. They dropped three inches, hanging motionless in the air.

The angel slowly lowered its hands from its casting gesture, the ash-colored hood tilting up as the blank, mirrored faceplate stared at Kyle’s right hand—and the massive, pacified celestial star sitting effortlessly in his grip.

"Well..." the angel murmured, its voice dropping into a quiet, stunned whisper that held no trace of its previous sarcasm. "...I’ll be damned."
