Triple X System
Chapter 464: Lies And Deceit (1)
The subterranean descent into the Old Iron Works felt like stepping into an forgotten grave.
The howling storm on the surface slowly quieted into a hollow, rhythmic drip of stagnant water freezing against the dark rock walls. As the narrow, winding shaft widened out, the air turned dense, heavy, and metallic—saturated with the suffocating reek of old rust and the bitter, sulfurous tang of dark beast mana.
Kyle led the way down the slick granite incline, his shadow gauntlet resting quietly at his side. Beside him, Yua kept her head low, her crimson eyes scanning the overhead wooden beams that groaned under the weight of the frozen mountain above. Behind them, Seraphina walked with smooth, silent grace, her ocean trident held at a gentle slant, while Vespera hovered three inches off the damp stone floor, surrounded by a faint halo of golden light that cast long, unnatural shadows against the cavern walls.
The absolute silence between them was taut and fragile.
"Your light is too loud," Yua muttered under her breath, glancing back at Vespera with an irritated snarl. "In a place like this, you’re lighting us up like a torch for every construct within five miles."
Vespera didn’t even turn her head. Her luminous golden eyes remained fixed straight ahead on the dark, winding tunnel. "The mindless beasts down here are driven by blood and spatial ripples, creature, not sight. My light is the only thing keeping the void-dross in these walls from seeping into your lungs and dissolving your core."
"I don’t need your light to keep me breathing," Yua spat, her long red claws snapping outward with a sharp, metallic ring.
"Enough," Kyle said quietly. His voice wasn’t loud, but it carried an icy, absolute weight that made both of them fall silent. "Save your energy. We’re almost at the main shaft."
They rounded a sharp, jagged bend in the rock, and the space opened up into a staggering subterranean valley.
Massive, rusted iron cranes hung suspended from the high, shadowed ceiling, their thick chains frozen mid-swing over a vast, pitch-black basin filled with stagnant, oily water. Crisscrossing iron tracks spanned the floor below, leading toward a giant, hollowed-out furnace structure embedded in the far wall of the cavern.
The central ore-processing furnace was pulsing. A deep, sickly purple light flared rhythmically from its iron vents, sending low, heavy vibrations through the stone beneath their boots.
Suddenly, a violent burst of bright, emerald-green fire exploded near the base of the tracks three hundred yards ahead, accompanied by a sharp, agonizing screech that echoed off the high iron beams.
*FWHOOOOOOSH—*
The green flames didn’t just burn; they hissed and dissolved the dark, mutated flesh of three hulking chimera constructs instantly, turning their thick bone armors into bubbling black sludge that dripped onto the iron rails.
Out from the green smoke stepped a tall, sharp-featured fox woman.
Her skin was a rich, deep brown, contrasting sharply with the glowing, venomous green fire dancing across her knuckles. Four long, thick fox tails whipped wildly behind her back, each one tipped with dark brown fur that bristled with lethal static. Her leather armor was torn, stained with dried purple blood and black iron soot, but her sharp golden-yellow eyes were wide open, fiercely clear, and burning with unyielding grit.
Falcon wiped a streak of dark grease and green toxic ash off her cheek, her chest heaving as she reeled back to launch another venomous strike at an incoming wave of blood puppets.
"Falcon!" Kyle called out, accelerating instantly. His dark boots blurred against the stone as he bounded across the rusted iron tracks.
Falcon spun around at the sound of her name, her four tails flaring outward as a mass of emerald poison fire burst across her palms. But the second her sharp eyes registered Kyle’s dark coat and slitted dark pupils, the violent green flames flickered and died, leaving only thin trails of toxic green smoke curling off her fingers.
"Kyle?" Falcon choked out, her raspy voice cracking from sheer exhaustion. She stared at him as he slid to a stop in front of her, her breath coming in heavy, ragged hitches. "You... you’re actually back?"
"I’m here," Kyle said, his tone softening as he caught her by the shoulder before her trembling knees could buckle. "Where are the rest of the scouts?"
Falcon let out a harsh, bitter laugh that ended in a sharp cough. "Scouts? There are no scouts left, kid. The Spire’s puppets wiped out the forward camp three weeks ago. I’ve been down in this dark hole for five days straight, burning every ugly thing that tries to crawl out of that furnace."
Yua and Seraphina landed lightly beside them, followed closely by Vespera, whose hovering presence immediately caught Falcon’s attention. Falcon’s four tails stiffened, her ears flattening against her dark brown hair as she sensed the terrifying, alien pressure radiating off the golden woman.
"What... what is that?" Falcon asked, her hands instinctively tightening, emerald sparks of poison mana crackling back along her arms. "Another monster?"
"A temporary ally," Kyle answered, stepping slightly between Falcon and Vespera. "We don’t have time to catch up, Falcon. Reze ran the numbers. The core inside that furnace is connected to the kingdom’s subterranean ley-lines. It’s set to detonate in less than forty-eight hours."
Falcon’s eyes widened slightly, then narrowed into a cold, lethal glare as she turned her head back toward the pulsing furnace. "Forty-eight hours? Hah. The damn thing’s been gathering strength for months. It isn’t just a core, Kyle. There’s something alive inside that furnace—a central controller. It’s using the old iron dross down here to build puppets that copy the exact combat styles of the royal palace guards."
"We noticed," Yua grinned, her crimson claws clicking together. "That just makes them more fun to tear apart."
Vespera floated forward, her glowing golden eyes ignoring the small talk completely as she stared directly at the iron furnace doors three hundred yards ahead. "The divine anchor inside that structure is reaching its critical threshold. The rival entity watching from the Upper Firmament is already trying to lock onto my presence. We break the core now, or we all burn together."
Kyle looked at Falcon. "Can you fight?"
Falcon spat a small wad of dark blood onto the tracks, her four tails whipping behind her back as bright, venomous green flames erupted across her arms once again, coating her sharp claws in dripping, liquid poison.
"I’ve been holding this line alone for five days, kid," Falcon growled, a sharp, wild smirk breaking through the grease and grime on her dark face. "You think I’m gonna sit back and watch you take all the credit?"
"Then we push in," Kyle commanded.
The group charged toward the central furnace like an arrow loosed from a bow.
From the dark shadows beneath the massive iron structures, dozens of corrupted chimera constructs lunged out to intercept them. These weren’t the wild, mindless beasts from the desert; these constructs were sleek, formed from hardened black iron slag and purple-veined bone, carrying heavy iron greatswords and moving with the fluid, disciplined formations of elite palace knights.
"I’ve got the front!" Falcon yelled.
She leaped high into the air, her four brown tails spreading out like a fan behind her. With a fierce shout, she swung both hands downward, unleashing a massive wave of emerald-green poison fire that washed over the lead construct formation.
*CSSSSSSHHHHHH!*
The green flames didn’t just burn through their iron armor—the toxic acid embedded in the poison fire melted through the joint rivets and dissolved the corrupted mana channels running through their core frames. The constructs stumbled, their iron limbs crumbling into soft, useless slag before they could even raise their weapons.
Yua darted through the green smoke right behind her, her red claws blurring in the dark as she shredded through the surviving vanguard, her blood-mana ripping their core engines out from their chests with brutal precision.
Seraphina moved with fluid, sovereign grace on their left flank. She didn’t use massive oceanic waves that could collapse the fragile cavern ceiling; instead, she condensed her azure mana into razor-thin spears of pressurized water that shot through the eyes and joint seams of every high-tier construct that tried to flank them.
"Vespera, the anchor!" Kyle shouted as they reached the massive, sealed iron doors of the furnace.
Vespera floated into the air above the furnace entrance, her light robes billowing as she raised both pale hands. "Isolating spatial frame now. Do not hesitate, mortal—my light will only hold the subterranean explosion for three minutes!"
*BOOOOOOM!*
A blinding dome of pale, golden-white radiance erupted from Vespera’s palms, expanding outward until it completely enveloped the massive iron furnace, sealing off its energy signature from the surrounding ley-lines under the kingdom.
Inside the light dome, the dark purple corruption thrashing beneath the furnace floor screeched in agony, its connection to the kingdom’s main core violently severed.
"Kyle! Go!" Falcon screamed, hurling a massive ball of concentrated green poison fire straight at the reinforced furnace doors.
The green toxic blast hit the heavy iron hinges, instantly eating through three feet of solid metal and turning the lock mechanism into a puddle of bubbling green sludge.
Kyle didn’t waste a millisecond. He kicked the melting doors wide open, stepping straight into the burning interior of the central furnace.
The inside of the furnace was a nightmare of dark technology and corrupted flesh. Suspended in the center of the giant iron vat was a massive, pulsing heart made of black iron cables, purple roots, and hundreds of squirming blood-anchors. Sitting right at the base of the heart was the central controller—a terrifying, eight-legged chimera construct forged from the armor plates of fallen Lumia knights.
The controller let out a deafening, metallic roar that shook the very foundation of the mountain, its iron legs snapping forward with terrifying speed.
Kyle didn’t flinch. His slitted dark eyes burned with an icy, absolute stillness.
He raised his right arm, his shadow gauntlet vibrating violently as pitch-black demon fire erupted along his forearm, wrapping around his hand until it formed a dense, pitch-black blade of condensed shadow.
’Snow,’ Kyle called out internally as he surged forward. ’Lock onto the primary core joint.’
’Target locked directly behind the sternum plate,’ Snow’s calm voice echoed inside his mind. ’Execute.’
Kyle ducked beneath the controller’s sweeping iron blade, his dark coat sweeping through the air as he pivoted on his heel. He plunged his shadow blade straight through the center of the construct’s chest plate, driving the pitch-black demon fire deep into the pulsating purple heart behind it.
*CRACK!*
The black demon flames consumed the purple corruption instantly, burning through the blood-anchors and turning the dark core into ash from the inside out. The massive eight-legged construct froze mid-strike, its glowing purple eyes flickering wildly before dimming into complete darkness.
With a low, grinding groan, the massive iron heart suspended above them shattered into a million useless pieces, raining down onto the floor like cold, harmless dust.
Outside the furnace, Vespera slowly lowered her arms, her golden radiance fading back into her body. The heavy, suffocating pressure vibrating through the subterranean tracks died instantly, leaving the cavern in complete, absolute quiet.
The forty-eight-hour clock was gone. The ley-lines were safe.
Falcon leaned against the melted doorway of the furnace, her four tails drooping slightly as she let out a long, exhausted breath. The green poison fire on her hands faded away, leaving her brown skin pale and covered in cold sweat, but a victorious smirk touched her lips as she looked at Kyle.
"Not bad, kid," Falcon rasped, wiping her brow. "You still hit like a runaway train."
Kyle didn’t answer immediately. He was kneeling beside the shattered remains of the central controller construct, his dark eyes fixed on a small, dark object that had fallen out of the construct’s broken chest cavity during the final blow.
He reached down, his gloved fingers picking up a small, heavy iron token.
It wasn’t a monster drops item, nor was it a piece of ancient dross from the mine. It was a refined, silver-bordered clearance token stamped with the official crest of the Lumia Royal Council—the exact same keycard used by high-ranking officials to access the palace’s inner defense arrays.
Yua walked into the furnace room, her eyes falling on the shiny silver crest in Kyle’s hand. "What’s that?"
Kyle slowly closed his fingers around the token, his grip so tight the dark metal of his gauntlet groaned under the pressure.
His slitted dark eyes turned toward the shaft leading back to the surface, his face completely devoid of relief.
*Snow was right.*
The monster in the mine was dead, but the person who gave it the key to the palace was still sitting comfortably inside the capital, watching the snow fall over the throne room.
"It’s nothing," Kyle said softly, his voice dropping into a cold, lethal quiet as he slipped the royal token into his dark coat. "Let’s head back to the palace. We have a rat to catch."
