Chapter 142: Just who in their right mind would miss that woman?
"Return to your spot, Black."
"Tsk."
Sarah snorted but in the end she complied and left Lucian alone. Lucian kept his smile even after she left, the concert moved into its second half, the crowd grew louder with every song and with it, the Energy rose even higher.
Every time Evelyn smiled, thousands responded, every time she reached her hand toward the crowd, the energy around her became even more overwhelming.
Lucian noticed it all.
And while he did, Evelyn reached the final song.
The hall darkened again, only one light remained, her voice became softer, the crowd quieted down with her.
Then, as the last note faded—
The entire hall, filled with twenty-six thousand people turned completely silent for one impossible second.
And then—
"EVELYN!!!!"
"I LOVE YOU!!!!"
Then the crowd erupted, the Energy of Desire surged one final time, this time, much more than ever before.
And Lucian—
He forced all his emotions down and smiled.
He watched the energy surround Evelyn, then, it scattered.
Evelyn bowed, the crowd screamed her name, the Enclave devices stayed silent and the concert finally ended, without an attack.
But the Enclave team did not ease up.
[All units maintain formation, we move in six minutes.]
Alaric’s voice came through the comm.
Others answered, routes were clear, backstage was secure, no residue detected even now.
Lucian looked at Evelyn as she walked off the stage, breathing hard, a little sweat glistening on her face. Her eyes were already searching for Lucian and when they found him, she smiled.
A smile far more beautiful than the smile she had on the stage.
"How was it?"
She asked, still catching her breath. Her eyes looked at him as if his answer was the only thing that mattered, that this was the exact moment she was working so hard for.
And Lucian—
"I wanted to stand at the front and chant your name together with the crowd.
It was absolutely amazing."
He answered honestly.
Evelyn really was amazing.
"Really?"
A big, breathtakingly beautiful smile appeared on Evelyn’s face.
"Yes, really."
Lucian smiled back.
That was when Alaric approached them.
"We move now."
Evelyn nodded.
The team formed around her, Sarah took rear-left, Elise moved ahead, Lila stayed close, Alaric watched the corridor and Lucian walked beside Evelyn.
As they moved through the backstage passage, the venue continued to roar and chant Evelyn’s name behind them.
The exit from Meridian Grand Hall was clean. The crowd remained behind the barriers, the media stayed where they were supposed to stay, staff movement remained controlled. No strange residue appeared near the backstage exits.
There were no Hosts, wolves, traps or anything of that sort, everything went exactly according to plan.
Honestly, it made Lucian a little uncomfortable, especially after what he saw today, but he didn’t complain, he sat beside Evelyn in Car One as the convoy left the venue through the approved route.
Again, nothing happened.
The ride from the venue back to Evelyn’s residence went without a single problem, Lucian’s team didn’t even have to use Plan B, let alone Plan C, D, E, F, G, or I, they had created in these past two weeks.
Once they returned to the residence, once they were inside, once all the protection mechanisms that the Enclave set up were activated again—
That was when today’s mission was finally over.
"Nothing happened~"
Evelyn grinned as she looked at Lucian.
"How could something happen? I was the one in charge. I left no opening, I overworked those people to their bones. Also, your guards hate me now."
Lucian answered confidently, his words made Evelyn smile, then she stared at him for a moment and—
"Thank you."
She expressed her gratitude.
"You know you don’t have to say that to me, right?"
Lucian gently held her hand.
"Mm."
Evelyn nodded.
Lucian then kissed her forehead before pulling her into a hug. The two remained silent for the next few seconds.
Then—
"Get some rest."
Lucian whispered softly and those words made Evelyn frown.
"Where are you going?"
"To my teacher."
"The crazy woman?"
"Please don’t spend too much time with Sarah."
"She is a crazy woman."
Evelyn spoke as a matter of fact and Lucian...
"She is just... different."
He had no other way to defend his teacher’s honour.
"Why are you going so suddenly?"
"There’s something I need to ask."
"What?"
"That’s teacher-student privacy."
"See if I care."
Evelyn snorted.
Lucian laughed, he kissed her forehead again then, with a serious look on his face—
"It’s important."
Hearing those words, Evelyn nodded with an understanding look on her face, then, she backed down.
"Alright."
"Thank you."
"You need to make it up to me."
"Of course."
Lucian smiled.
He remained with Evelyn for a few more minutes, then, he left and walked right into Alaric’s office.
"What is it?"
Alaric questioned without looking up.
"I need to leave."
And those words made Alaric look up.
"Now?"
He frowned.
"Yes."
"It is a critical moment, we weren’t attacked today, that only raises the probability of an attack tomorrow."
"I’ll be back before then."
"I still need you to complete today’s paperwork."
At those words, Lucian sighed in defeat, then, he moved his hand to his pocket and before he could bring his phone out.
"You can leave."
Alaric gave in.
His mouth twitched as he remembered the last time this happened.
"Thank you, Commander."
Lucian smiled brightly.
And Alaric—
He only asked one question.
"Why now?"
Lucian looked at him, Alaric stared back.
"You no longer need to use the Crucible."
"I just miss my teacher, it’s been a while since I saw her."
"You... miss her?"
Alaric blinked at those words.
"Of course."
Lucian beamed.
Alaric only stared at this man with a strange look on his face.
Just who in their right mind would miss that woman?
He had trained under her for six whole months and he never missed a second of it.
"Why? Are you saying my teacher isn’t someone worth missing?"
Alaric’s mouth twitched at those words, in the end, he pressed his temples, trying to control his irritation and then—
"Just leave."
He just sighed.
"As you command, Commander."
Lucian smiled brightly.
