Chapter 149: Chapter 151: The Night Watchers’ Thoughts

Su Luoluo heard this and looked utterly confused. "A vigil? What kind of vigil?"

It’s not like we’re out in the wild. What is there to keep watch for?

The last time Su Luoluo had heard about a vigil was when they were fleeing the flood to get to their current home. Su Yang had told her to find a Beastman to spend the night with her.

Mo Xuan looked surprised when he heard her. "You really don’t know about the vigil?"

’What’s with that? His tone makes it sound like I *have* to know about the vigil, or else I’m some kind of weirdo.’

Su Luoluo’s heart skipped a beat. ’Could it be the original owner of this body knew?’

’Then again, it should be pretty normal to forget something like that.’

Su Luoluo decided to bluff her way through it. She shot Mo Xuan a look. "What’s so strange about it? I know how to build a bread oven. You don’t, do you?"

Mo Xuan’s throat tightened, and the surprise on his face faded. He explained, "That’s not what I meant. I was just surprised that you, a female, didn’t know something that every Beastman knows."

He paused for a moment before adding, "When a female is pregnant, accidents can easily happen. The Beastmen need to take turns keeping a vigil to ensure the female’s safety. Hasn’t the Leader’s Wife told you this?"

’Oh, so *that’s* the kind of vigil they mean.’

Hearing this, Su Luoluo felt it was perfectly normal that she didn’t know.

After all, Lan Ya hardly ever paid attention to her. And ever since Su Nuannuan had shamed her, Lan Ya had been too embarrassed to show her face in the tribe for a long time, let alone talk to Su Luoluo about pregnancy matters.

Only after he finished speaking did Mo Xuan realize he had misspoken.

’How could he have forgotten?’

Lan Ya wasn’t like other mothers. She didn’t particularly care for Su Luoluo, so there were probably many things she hadn’t told her.

Besides, Su Luoluo had been raised by her Black Bear Foster Mother. It was normal that they didn’t have a tradition of keeping a vigil.

After all, given the massive size of the Black Bears, ordinary beasts wouldn’t dare attack them.

At this thought, he said with regret, "I’m sorry, Su Luoluo. I didn’t mean to bring it up."

Su Luoluo wasn’t particularly hurt by his words. After all, Mo Xuan was speaking the truth, and Lan Ya had always been like that. She was used to it.

She shook her head. "It’s fine. She really never told me about it."

Luan Ting watched Su Luoluo with his gentle eyes and slowly explained, "It’s not really a big deal. It’s just a custom passed down from our ancestors."

Seeing Su Luoluo still looked confused, Luan Ting continued in a soft voice:

"A long time ago, our ancestors lived in the wild. When sleeping outdoors, they were vulnerable to attacks from other beastmen at night. These attackers especially liked to strike when a tribe was at its weakest. When a tribe was expecting new cubs, the pregnant females were prime targets."

’Of course, there was something he didn’t tell her. In the past, the vigil was to prevent sudden attacks from wild beasts that could harm the female and the cubs in her womb. But over time, it had gradually evolved into a way to deepen the bond between a female and her Beastman partners.’

’During the vigil, the Beastman would sleep with the female. It was convenient for taking care of her, and also... for satisfying some of his own needs.’

Only then did Su Luoluo understand what this so-called vigil was all about.

’But that was all in the distant past. Now they live in wooden houses. How could there be any sudden beast attacks?’

’Besides, this vigil isn’t just about two people staying in the same room, is it?’

She didn’t need to think too hard about it. One look at the eerie glow in Fu Feng’s emerald eyes told her this wasn’t so simple.

’Sleeping alone in a room was so much more comfortable; she could sleep however she wanted. Besides, Su Luoluo knew she wasn’t a neat sleeper. Having someone else in the room would feel awkward, and she’d be uncomfortable to say the least.’

So, when the six of them extended the invitation for a vigil, she refused almost without thinking. "There’s no need. I’m quite safe in my wooden house. You don’t have to worry about beast attacks."

"Besides, you all live right near me. If there’s any danger, I can just shout and you’ll hear. There’s no need to go to all this trouble."

Before any of them could respond, Su Luoluo added another sentence, pre-emptively shutting down their arguments.

’She knew they wouldn’t give up just because she said no. They’d probably use some safety concerns as an excuse to stay in her room.’

’That’s why she spoke up first, cutting off the arguments they were about to make.’

To be honest, Fu Feng and the others hadn’t expected Su Luoluo to refuse.

Before, she had been desperate to climb into their beds. Now that an opportunity to sleep with them was served up on a silver platter, she was actually turning it down.

The men were all quite looking forward to this vigil.

Aside from when they were doing it with Su Luoluo, they had never actually, properly slept in the same bed with her.

Compared to the other females and their Beastmen in the tribe, who all shared a bed, they were the odd ones out.

Ever since forming the totem bond with Su Luoluo, they had always slept in separate beds, or even separate rooms.

They were nothing like other Beastman couples, who slept together in the same bed.

Before, they had disliked Su Luoluo’s behavior and detested being with her, so they’d had a tacit agreement not to bring up the subject.

But things were different now. They had mated with Su Luoluo, and more importantly, she was carrying their cubs. Sharing a bed now seemed especially important.

The most crucial part was the unspoken "benefits" that came with it.

They had all been gearing up to impress Su Luoluo, only for her to reject them flat out.

Fu Feng had been waiting for Su Luoluo to agree so he could take the opportunity to show off his masculine prowess, but she refused?

It felt like he had already boiled the water and was just waiting to put the rice in the pot, only for the rice to refuse.

He couldn’t accept her refusal, no matter what. His gaze was like a torch as he stared at Su Luoluo. "I disagree. This vigil is tradition. If you refuse, what will the rest of the tribe think of me... of us?"

"Huh?"

’Did I hear that right? Fu Feng, who never gave a damn what the other tribespeople thought, was suddenly concerned about their opinion of him?’

She rolled her eyes at him. "Don’t worry. With your Beastification Level, they wouldn’t dare to gossip about you."

’After all, who would go looking for trouble?’

No matter how much the tribespeople loved to gossip, they knew what lines not to cross.

If nothing else, look at how the original owner had been neglected by her Beastmen for so long. The tribespeople only ever gossiped about Su Luoluo; the men were hardly ever mentioned.

Seeing Su Luoluo deflect his argument, Fu Feng tried again. "I don’t care about that. Besides the tribe, if my Mother found out, she’d blame me too."

This left Su Luoluo even more speechless. Fu Feng’s Mother wasn’t even here. How would she possibly know that her son wasn’t keeping vigil for his female?

’Besides, it’s not like I’m carrying *his* family’s descendant in my belly, so that point is moot.’

"’It’s fine. Your Mother isn’t here. If we don’t say anything, how would she know?’ Su Luoluo said with a lazy yawn."

"But it’s too late. I already told her," Fu Feng retorted, stubbornly refusing to back down.

Su Luoluo: "..."

"Then might I ask, just how did you tell her?"

At this, Su Luoluo was rendered completely speechless.

’Does he think this is the Post-apocalypse, where you can just send a message with a smart-device and it gets delivered instantly?’

’This is the Beast World. There’s no paper, no pens. How the hell did he get a message to her?’

Fu Feng’s neck stiffened. Meeting Su Luoluo’s skeptical gaze, he puffed out his chest and declared, "We Dragon Sparrows can fly. We can pass messages through other birds."

’Now that was a method she hadn’t considered.’

’Birds certainly had an advantage when it came to delivering messages.’

’Still, it’s not his kid. What’s the point of him saying anything?’

’Is this a ’it’s the thought that counts’ kind of thing?’
