Chapter 268: Chapter 270: Lan Ya’s Cover is Blown

As the two were at a stalemate, Su Yang ran over anxiously from a distance. "Luoluo, what’s going on? What do you mean you can’t have children?"

After speaking, he patted Su Luoluo’s shoulder comfortingly. "It’s okay if you can’t have children. We already have Red Fur, Grey Fur, and White Fur, plus Susu and the seven Snake Eggs. That’s more than enough children."

"Red Fur, Grey Fur, and White Fur? Father, don’t tell me those are the names you gave the wolf cubs!" Su Luoluo had been about to explain things, but after hearing the "three Furs," she couldn’t hold it in any longer.

’What the hell? Don’t tell me my cute little cubs are really named that?’

"Yeah. They’re easy to remember and they sound nice, don’t they?"

Su Luoluo curled her lip in disgust. "Father, how about you just... not be the one to name them."

’Good thing none of the cubs have yellow fur. If he called one Huang Mao, I’d really let him have it.’

"What’s wrong? Aren’t they great names? Right, Luan Ting?" Su Yang looked at Luan Ting expectantly.

Although Su Yang was his elder, Luan Ting, for once, didn’t humor him. "Father, I’ve already named them. The white wolf has a gentle personality, so he’s called Luan Xue. The red wolf is lively, so he’s Luan Ye. The grey wolf is calm and composed, so he’s Luan Rong."

"See, those names are much more pleasant to the ear. Father, I think we should go with Luan Ting’s names."

Su Yang looked indignant. "What’s all this ’Xue’ and ’Ye’ nonsense? Red Fur, White Fur, and Grey Fur sound way better."

"Alright, fine. We can use them as nicknames," Su Luoluo conceded.

’It’s not like the cubs will come looking for me to complain when they grow up, anyway.’

Seeing Su Luoluo in a better mood, Su Yang took the opportunity to console her. "There’s no rush to have children. Once I find the Returning Grass, you might just have twenty in one go for me."

’I know he means well, but isn’t that a bit much?!’

Su Luoluo waved her hands dismissively. "Father, don’t worry about it. You’ll know the truth tonight."

...

When Lan Ya heard the news that Su Luoluo couldn’t get pregnant, her face was a mask of panic.

’How could she be infertile?’

’Didn’t the Heavenly God say the talisman was to counteract the curse of Su Luoluo jinxing me?’

’Could I have gotten it wrong? Or did Su Luoluo not drink it?’

The thought that Su Luoluo’s reaction was different from what she had imagined made Lan Ya restless and uneasy.

She stewed in anxiety all day. When night came, she tried to contact the Heavenly God in her sleep, but after tossing and turning for what felt like half the night, she neither fell asleep nor received a visit from the deity.

After some thought, she decided to go to the place where the Heavenly God was worshipped to ask for guidance.

Su Yang was out for the day again, off doing who-knows-what, so she didn’t have to be sneaky about getting out of bed. Leaving was easy.

It was late at night. Although the bright moon hung high in the sky, the silvery moonlight cast swaying tree shadows that danced with the wind, creating a rather eerie atmosphere.

It made Lan Ya unconsciously clutch the Beast Skin Skirt she was wearing to reassure herself.

Fortunately, the Heavenly God Hall wasn’t far from her dwelling. Lan Ya arrived after a short walk.

In the center of the great hall, the Holy Fire burned, perpetually and unceasingly.

As soon as Lan Ya saw it, she dropped to her knees. "O Heavenly God, this faithful servant has followed Your guidance and given the talisman water to the one who jinxes me. But for some reason, she has suddenly become infertile. This servant wishes to ask if the talisman water has taken effect on her."

"If it has not worked, I pray the Heavenly God grants me another talisman. This time, I will make sure the one who jinxes me drinks it."

Earlier that night, Su Yang had been about to go to bed, but Su Luoluo had stopped him after only a few steps, saying she wanted to go to the Heavenly God Hall to discuss something with him.

He had assumed Su Luoluo wanted to confide in him about her infertility, so he hadn’t refused and had come along. He never expected to hear something like this.

He burst into the hall instantly, cursing at the vicious woman before him. "Lan Ya, I never knew you were so malicious! To think you’d poison your own child!"

"Su... Su Yang, what are you doing here?" Lan Ya was still kneeling, piously awaiting the Heavenly God’s arrival. Who would have thought that instead of the god, Su Yang would be the one to burst in?

"Hmph! If I hadn’t come in, how would I have heard such venomous words? Even a vicious tiger won’t eat its own cubs, but listen to yourself! How could you be so wicked!"

He had always known Lan Ya disliked Su Luoluo. He’d thought it was simple animosity, but he never imagined her hatred ran so deep that she would poison her own child—and with a talisman that causes infertility.

"It’s not like that! I didn’t want Su Luoluo to be unable to have children! It’s her! She has a cursed fate that jinxes me! That’s why I gave her the talisman water."

"Jinxes you?"

Hearing this, Su Luoluo could no longer stand it. She walked in from outside, her gaze cold as she stared at Lan Ya. "What do you mean, ’jinxes you’? Lan Ya, have you ever once thought of me as your child? What kind of mother in this world would claim her own child jinxes her?"

At this, Lan Ya threw all pretense aside, her face twisting in a snarl. "I don’t jinx you? If you hadn’t shown up, would Nuannuan have died? Would Su Zhao resent me now?"

"Su Luoluo, do you dare say you didn’t cause all of this?" The more Lan Ya spoke, the more convinced she became of her own righteousness.

"Hah! How laughable. You blame me for Su Nuannuan’s own wicked heart? As for Su Zhao, wasn’t it you who looked down on Hong Shuang, said those things to her, and drove her to jump off a cliff to her death?"

"Lan Ya, when all these things happened to them, don’t you bear any responsibility at all?"

Hearing Lan Ya’s wild accusations, Su Luoluo could hold back no longer and proceeded to lay bare the ugliness in her heart.

"In the end, aren’t you just selfish? You only want what’s good and can’t accept anything that isn’t. From the very beginning, you never accepted me. You called me ugly, you called me fat, you said I couldn’t compare to Su Nuannuan in any way. All of this is just your own vanity talking!"

Hearing this, Su Yang finally realized how much he had failed Su Luoluo. He, too, had disliked her once-slovenly appearance and hadn’t shown her much concern. He’d had no idea that Lan Ya had been so vicious to her all this time.

"I did not! It’s your own bad fate that jinxes me! What does that have to do with me?" Lan Ya felt not a shred of guilt, placing all the blame on Su Luoluo.

"Ah Yang, the Heavenly God himself guided me! If I didn’t give Su Luoluo the talisman water, she would have made everything in my life go wrong! It would have ruined me! Do you want me to die?"

"So you think it’s okay for me to die instead?" Su Luoluo could only find the whole thing absurd.

Su Yang’s brows furrowed deeply at her words. He managed to keep a clear head, however. Hearing Lan Ya mention the Heavenly God’s guidance, he asked with some suspicion, "Where did you see this Heavenly God?"

The Heavenly God had always been benevolent and selfless; why would he guide someone to commit such a petty, villainous act?

As if to prove her point, Lan Ya hurriedly explained, "In a dream, of course! I dreamt it yesterday! I saw a Heavenly God with my own eyes, one with black wings, and he spoke to me."

Just as she spoke, Xi Yi shoved someone into the hall. "Is this the Heavenly God you were talking about?"

Lan Ya looked at the Hua Witch, her pupils shrinking instantly. Her face was a picture of disbelief as she stammered, "Heavenly God, what are you doing here?"
