Chapter 44: Chapter 44: Braving Fire and Water, Ready to Die a Thousand Deaths

By now, Xiao Yufei had woken up. Feeling Ye Feng’s large hand pressed firmly against her pert bottom, her pretty face instantly flushed crimson with embarrassment.

"Put me down! I can walk on my own!"

Just then, Xiao Yuanshan walked over. He looked at Xiao Yufei and burst out laughing. "You’ve already carried her to the door, why put her down now? Just carry her straight into the room! You two are like an old married couple already. What part of her haven’t you touched? Why be so fussy about these things? Haha..."

"Grandpa, what nonsense are you spouting?" Xiao Yufei was mortified. She struggled out of Ye Feng’s arms, covered her face, and ran toward her room.

Behind them, Xiao Yuanshan beamed at Ye Feng and said, "Go on, go on. The most important thing is to hurry up and make me a chubby great-grandson."

With that, he gave Ye Feng a hard shove, pushing him straight into Xiao Yufei’s room and shutting the door behind him.

Xiao Yufei, who had already taken off her jacket and was about to change, shrieked when she saw Ye Feng enter the room. She quickly clutched her clothes to her chest and yelled:

"What are you doing? Get out!"

Ye Feng glanced at Xiao Yufei, quirked his lips, and said lazily, "I’ve already seen everything. You don’t have to be like this."

"What did you say? Get out." Xiao Yufei’s eyes were wide with anger.

Ye Feng didn’t bother to argue. He stuffed his hands in his pockets, turned, and started walking out. His calm voice drifted back from behind him:

"Next time you go out with someone, be more careful. Don’t go out drinking and eating with just any random person. You ran into me today, but you won’t always be this lucky. When you end up in real trouble, it’ll be too late for regrets!"

Hearing Ye Feng’s words, a sudden warmth spread through Xiao Yufei’s heart. ’He’s worried about me!’

But then she remembered the ambiguous relationship between him and Wang Luyao, and her anger flared up again. She glared at Ye Feng and roared, "It’s none of your business!"

Ye Feng chuckled and turned to leave. He had done his part; whether she listened or not was up to her.

Ye Feng couldn’t be bothered to look at Xiao Yufei’s sour face and was about to leave, but just as he reached the door, he ran into Lan Yazhi, who was returning from grocery shopping.

Seeing Ye Feng, Lan Yazhi greeted him warmly, "You’re back, child. I’ll go make you dinner right now."

Looking at the kind Lan Yazhi, Ye Feng quickly smiled and shook his head. "No, Auntie, it’s okay. A friend asked me out to eat!"

He was about to leave, but Lan Yazhi blocked his way with her arm and said firmly, "No, you can’t go. You’ve been here for so many days and haven’t even tried Mom’s cooking. You have to stay today and try the hand-pulled noodles I’m making for you."

Ye Feng found it impossible to refuse Lan Yazhi’s warmth, so he had no choice but to turn back.

That evening, Lan Yazhi made the hand-pulled noodles and brought a bowl to Ye Feng herself. It was topped with two fried eggs and a splash of chili oil!

Ye Feng was a bit hungry himself. He finished the large bowl, and finding it delicious, he actually ate a second one.

Eating the hand-pulled noodles, he was reminded of when his mother was still around. She used to make them for him often. He could suddenly taste his mother’s cooking again.

A lump suddenly formed in Ye Feng’s throat. He murmured in his heart, ’Mom, Dad, where are you? Your son, Ye Feng, misses you.’

Lan Yazhi sensed something was wrong with Ye Feng. She sat down beside him, patted his shoulder, and said with a smile, "Are you homesick? From now on, just think of this as your home, and think of me as your own mother!"

Ye Feng nodded emphatically and looked at Lan Yazhi. "Auntie, thank you. In the future, if you ever need anything from me, just say the word. I, Ye Feng, would go through fire and water and never shrink from death."

Lan Yazhi giggled. "Silly boy, you’re my child. Of course I’ll tell you if I need anything in the future!

"And all that talk about ’fire and water’ and ’never shrinking from death’—it’s not that serious. Now, hurry up and eat. I’ll go get you another bowl."

She turned and walked to the kitchen, emerging a short while later with another bowl of hand-pulled noodles.

Just then, Xiao Yufei came in, having changed into casual clothes. Seeing Ye Feng eating, she shot him a harsh glare before looking at Lan Yazhi and saying:

"I’m hungry too. Let me have that bowl of noodles."

She reached for the bowl, but Lan Yazhi dodged to the side, went straight to Ye Feng, and poured the entire contents into his bowl. Then she looked at Xiao Yufei and said with a smile:

"This is all the hand-pulled dough I made for today. I’ll make you some dried noodles in a bit!"

Xiao Yufei was having none of it. She glared at Lan Yazhi and yelled, "Why? Why does he get to eat hand-pulled noodles while I have to eat dried noodles? Who’s your family, me or him?"

Lan Yazhi beamed at Xiao Yufei. "You’re my daughter, and he’s my son-in-law. Haven’t you ever heard that a mother-in-law dotes on her son-in-law most?"

Xiao Yufei: "..."

Lan Yazhi turned and went back into the kitchen.

Xiao Yufei glared at Ye Feng and said coldly, "Weren’t you leaving? Why are you still mooching around here?"

Ye Feng put down his bowl, wiped his mouth with a napkin, and let out a satisfied burp. "If I said I stayed just to have a bowl of Auntie’s hand-pulled noodles, would you believe me?"

Xiao Yufei shot Ye Feng a glare. "Do you even believe that yourself? Don’t get any ideas about me. You have to leave tonight!"

The moment she finished speaking, a stern voice rang out from behind her. "Who’s trying to kick out my wonderful grandson-in-law? Did you ask for my permission?"

As the voice faded, Xiao Yuanshan walked in with his hands behind his back.

"Grandpa, that’s not what I meant..." Seeing Xiao Yuanshan, Xiao Yufei instantly lost her nerve and tried to explain.

But she was only halfway through her sentence when Xiao Yuanshan cut her off. "Explain what? I may be old, but I’m not deaf. I heard every word you said, loud and clear. Tonight, I’m going to watch and see who dares to kick my grandson-in-law out."

With that, he sat down right next to Ye Feng, slung an arm around his shoulder, and declared domineeringly, "Kid, I’m backing you up today. I’d like to see anyone dare to bully you."

Xiao Yufei’s head started to throb!

After dinner, Xiao Yuanshan glared at Xiao Yufei and Ye Feng. "Both of you, back to the room. I’ll be watching."

Xiao Yufei wasn’t having it. She glared at Xiao Yuanshan and shouted, "Grandpa, let me be honest with you. I don’t like him at all! I will never, ever share a bed with him, so you can just give up on that idea!"

"You..." Xiao Yuanshan was so angry he started trembling all over. "Fine! You little monster, trying to break our agreement!

"Alright, you want to play hardball? I can do that too.

"I hereby announce that starting today, not only will I stop taking my medicine, I’ll stop eating, too! I’m going on a hunger strike! I’m going to die right here in front of you!"

Lan Yazhi, who was busy in the kitchen, rushed out and cried, "Oh, dear, stop being so stubborn! Do you really want to anger your grandfather to death?"

"I..." Xiao Yufei was at her wit’s end. She turned her head and shot Ye Feng a pleading look.

Ye Feng smiled calmly, then turned to Xiao Yuanshan and said:

"Old Master, I’ll be honest with you, too. I don’t particularly like Xiao Yufei, so I don’t want to share a bed with her either. Please, just let us off the hook!"

Xiao Yuanshan turned to Ye Feng and gave him a sly grin. He made a fist with his right hand and mouthed an explosive sound: "BOOM!"
