He placed anchor thirty-three before Cole arrived.

One session in the early morning, pool starting at full. The anchor seated in thirty-six seconds — faster than any contact point in the upper sections, faster than yesterday’s session. The carrier function was building memory of Zone Two’s specific compression character the same way it had built memory of every other stone it had spent extended time inside. Thirty-three anchors were not enough to call it mastery. It was enough to call it familiar.

He surfaced at the eighth hour. Pool at 89%.

Cole came down the ridge at the ninth hour. Alone. Same notebook.

He sat at the depression’s edge on the same level as the day before, three meters off. He did not open the notebook immediately.

"I want to understand the process," he said. "All of it."

Kai began at the beginning, which was the carrier function.

"Three requirements," he said. "Each one is not a policy choice. Each one is a physical limit. Without all three, the process does not produce a safe result."

Cole opened his notebook.

"The first is the carrier function."

The carrier function was the mechanism that read the gene structure of a gene fragment. It built an integration channel — a path between the fragment’s code and the host’s body. Without the channel, a gene fragment entered the body without a connection point. At Common and Rare grades, the fragment was simple enough that the body’s natural gene structure could recognize something close to it and manage the contact. The rejection rate at Common grade was low. At Rare, it increased.

At Elite grade and above, the integration channel was not optional. Without it, the fragment could not find a matching architecture inside the host. It looked for what it needed, could not find it, and the body began rejecting it. At Elite grade, the rejection response was dangerous. At King grade and above, it could be fatal.

"You mentioned the rejection response at Kael’s Seat," Cole said. "You called it a physical limit, not a policy limit. I understood that. What I did not understand was why it was physical."

"The fragment is looking for a carrier function’s integration point," Kai said. "It was absorbed by something else originally — an organism or entity with a gene structure built for it. When it tries to absorb into a new host, it is looking for the same architecture it came from. The carrier function creates that architecture. Without the carrier function, the fragment does not find what it is looking for and begins pushing against the host’s existing structure instead."

Cole wrote.

"Can the carrier function be developed?" he said. "In someone who does not currently have it — through training, through practice."

"Yes. The Guild has trained carriers for two hundred years. Three to five years for basic function. Ten years to reach the level needed for Elite grade work safely." Kai looked at the highland beyond the zone. "I was selected for the training program at twenty. My first working function contact was at twenty-three. I could not safely work above Common grade until year five. Elite grade by year eight."

Cole sat with this.

"Two hundred years of carrier training," he said. "How many active carriers are working at or above Elite grade?"

"Across the Guild’s full history, a small number. Most carriers work at Rare and some at Elite. Source-contact level work is rare." He paused. "I am the only active carrier at Gene Ancient level. The last carrier at this level worked four generations ago."

Cole wrote carefully.

"The second requirement," Kai said, "is the Gene Archive."

The archive held the original gene templates of organisms that had developed inside the Gene Distribution Network over thousands of years. During integration, the carrier function needed a reference point — a standard against which the host’s architecture was matched. The archive provided this. Without the archive’s templates, the carrier function was working without a reference.

For Common and Rare grades, a working carrier could manage without archive access. These gene types appeared in surface organisms across the continent. A carrier who worked with Common and Rare material long enough built recognition memory for them. The integration channel formed from that memory rather than from archive reference.

For anything above Rare grade, the archive reference was required. The gene material at Elite grade and above was complex enough that recognition memory alone was not enough. The carrier function needed to know the original template to build the correct integration channel.

"GeneCorp’s current commercial operations," Cole said slowly, "use no archive connection."

"Yes."

"And they work because the grades are low enough."

"At Common and Rare, yes. The rejection rate at those grades without archive access is manageable. Not zero — your records have the cases where it fails. But manageable enough that the market has treated it as an acceptable outcome."

Cole wrote.

"The rejection rate increases with grade," he said. He was filing it, not questioning it.

"Yes. At Elite grade, the rejection rate without archive reference is high enough that GeneCorp does not offer Elite grade commercially without direct supervision. You offer it under private contract, with staff on site who monitor the process and respond when it fails."

Cole’s pen stopped for a moment.

"That is accurate," he said. "We classify it as supervised access."

"The staff are managing the outcome of a process that does not have the second requirement," Kai said. "They are not replacing the archive reference. They are limiting the harm when the reference is missing."

Cole looked at his notebook. He was placing what Kai had said against the data he already had. It fit. When something matched what he already knew, he wrote it without argument.

"The third requirement," Kai said, "is different in kind from the first two."

Cole looked up.

"Entity consent."

A pause.

"The entities are old organisms," Kai said. "They developed their intelligence over thousands of years, growing deep inside rock where most things do not grow. They do not communicate the way people communicate. But they make decisions. About what to allow. About what to hold back. About what to trust." He looked at the depression. "The zone event happened because the Fragment Extractor treated the basement rock below us as empty material. It is not empty. The entity in that rock chose to hold still when the extractor began its first sweep. It could have withdrawn then. It chose not to. When the full sweep began and the rock around it changed, it withdrew from the damaged sections — as a biological response, not a collapse. It did not choose the damage. But it responded to it."

Mira, from her position three meters east with the vault pair shells on her knees, said: "It is still choosing to wait." She did not look up. "The machine has been gone for six days. The entity knows it is gone. It is still holding close to the positions Kai repaired — the contact points near the twelve restored anchors. It has not withdrawn to the center of its territory." A pause. "It is watching what comes next."

Cole looked at the darker shell. At the low steady glow.

"That glow," he said. "That is related to the entity’s state."

"The vault pair reads gene energy signals from the archive and from entities connected to the network," Kai said. "The shells read what the entity is doing the way an instrument reads pressure — not in words, but in signal character. Mira interprets the character."

Cole looked at Mira. He did not ask further. He looked back at his notebook.

"Entity consent," he said, "is not a way of saying that an entity cannot physically resist access. It is a way of saying that the access process requires an active signal from the entity."

"Yes. The entity’s gene blueprint and the entity are the same thing. You cannot access the blueprint without the entity’s participation. If the entity withdraws, the contact point closes. The carrier function holds an empty anchor." He looked at the depression. "What the Fragment Extractor produced was not a failed extraction. It produced a zone event because the rock it was trying to read was the entity’s body. The entity had no choice but to respond."

Soren, who had come within hearing range during the explanation and was writing in his notebook, spoke without looking up: "The instrument records from the zone event show the energy spike was not the extractor releasing stored energy. It was the zone itself — the entity’s distributed presence in the rock pushing outward when the anchor connections severed. The entity was not damaged. It expelled energy it could no longer hold in the severed sections." He turned a page. "The energy went into the surface organisms. Which is why the colony recovered above baseline."

Cole looked at Soren.

"Confirmed in the instrument record?" he said.

"Yes."

Cole wrote.

He was quiet for a time. Mira read the shells. Somewhere above the zone, the highland birds were moving through the morning. The burrowing colony in the soil to the northwest was dense and active through Earth Depth Sense — deeper than before, richer. Still absorbing the scattered gene energy from six days ago.

"The carrier function," Cole said at last. "The Gene Archive connection. Entity consent." He looked at Kai. "Three requirements, each of which depends on infrastructure that does not exist anywhere outside the work this survey has built."

"Yes."

Cole was very still. Not his tell — not the deep stillness that broke when his framework failed. Something more considered than that. He was looking at the shape of what he had been told, and the shape required him to think carefully before he responded.

"What if none of those are available?" he said.

The question carried no heat. No challenge. It was a genuine question about the limits of what the process could do at any scale larger than this valley.

Kai understood what Cole was asking. Not what if one person could not access the three requirements. What if the world’s gene access was structured such that these requirements could not be met at any commercial scale? At the scale of GeneCorp’s supply chain. At the scale of the Common grade products that millions of people used for basic health — everything built on the assumption that gene material could be extracted, processed, and sold.

The sun had moved above the eastern ridge. The zone was warming into the late morning. Below the rock, the entity waited in the undamaged deep basement stone.

"Then the process does not happen," Kai said.

Cole looked at him.

"That is not a refusal," Kai said. "It is a physical limit. Gene material above a certain grade cannot be safely absorbed without the integration channel. The channel cannot exist without the carrier function. The carrier function cannot build the right channel without the archive reference. The entity’s blueprint cannot be accessed without the entity’s participation — not because of a rule, but because the blueprint and the entity are the same thing. This is how the material works." He looked at the depression. "The Gene Civilization built it this way. Not to create a wall. To create a safety limit built into the material itself."

Cole wrote for a long time. More than the exchange seemed to require.

When he stopped, he sat looking at his notebook for a moment.

"The Common and Rare supply," he said. "That does not require archive access. That works through surface-level organism material."

"Yes. Surface organisms near active zones carry gene energy in their bodies through ground contact with the network. That supply is increasing as more zones are established. Common and Rare grade supply from surface organisms will continue to grow." Kai looked at Cole. "What your market currently has access to can continue. What your market wants access to above that grade requires all three requirements."

Cole absorbed this.

"There is currently one person with a carrier function at the level this requires," he said.

"Yes."

Cole looked at the depression. At the fractured upper surface. At the clean, patient stone below it. His expression did not change. He was working through calculations behind the stillness. He was not sharing them.

He closed his notebook.

"I need to bring this to the Guild’s eastern Division," he said. "Formally. Not as a challenge — as a governance question that needs formal review." He stood and straightened his jacket. He looked at Kai. "The review will take time. I want to be honest with you about what I am bringing. GeneCorp’s eastern supply projections were built on the assumption that the material here was accessible by standard extraction. Those projections are wrong." He paused. "I will be stating that to the Board myself."

Kai said nothing.

Filed: this was what Cole looked like when he revised his position. Not capitulation. A correction. Made the same way he had made everything else — precisely, without excess.

"Thank you for explaining it fully," Cole said.

He looked once more at the depression — at the cracked sections, at the intact deep rock, at the darker shell’s steady glow on Mira’s knees.

Then he walked back toward the ridge.

Soren waited until Cole was far enough up the slope. Then he looked at Kai. He looked at his notebook. He wrote one more line.

He did not say what it was.

Mira was still with the vault pair. The entity’s patient watching had not changed during the conversation. Below the zone, it was choosing stillness the same way it had been choosing it for six days.

Kai noted it.

He looked at the anchor count.

Thirty-three down. Thirty-nine remaining.

He would begin anchor thirty-four at the fourteenth hour.
