Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers
Chapter 432: Jade
Jade texted on a Saturday morning.
Are you free today.
Yes, he said.
I want to talk, she said. Not the monitoring update. Something else.
When, he said.
Afternoon, she said. The fencing complex is running a junior session. I help coach on Saturday mornings. I’ll be done by one.
One thirty, he said. The coffee place on Aldine Street.
A pause.
You’re using that street again, she said.
It’s a good street, he said.
It’s a test, she said.
Is it passing, he said.
Yes, she said. One thirty.
—
She was already there when he arrived.
Dark jacket. Hair pulled back. The working version of herself, still carrying the morning’s energy from the coaching session. She had a coffee in front of her and the specific quality of someone who had been thinking about what she wanted to say since she texted.
He sat across from her.
He ordered.
She looked at him.
"Three months," she said.
"Since the Hale engagement closed," he said.
"Since I withdrew," she said. "Three months of monitoring updates. The methodology sessions with Max. The fencing exhibition." She held her cup. "Three months of being adjacent to what you’re building without being fully in it."
He held his coffee.
"You want to change that," he said.
"I’ve been thinking about what adjacent means," she said. "I told Max I could identify the quality of attention before it becomes findable. I told him that’s what I do. He understood the methodology." She held her cup. "But that’s the professional framing."
"Tell me the other one," he said.
She held her cup.
"I withdrew from the Hale engagement before telling you," she said. "I told you everything I found. I’ve been watching Crane and flagging anything relevant. I connected Mia and the piece to what was happening." She held her cup. "I’ve been doing all of that because it’s correct. Not because I was asked."
"Yes," he said.
"I want you to know that’s not going to change," she said. "Whatever this conversation is. The correct things I do because they’re correct don’t change."
"I know," he said.
She held her cup.
"But," she said.
"Tell me," he said.
She looked at him directly. The full version of the dark eyes. Not the professional read. The other one.
"I’ve been in this work for two years," she said. "Corporate security. The ambiguous space. I’m good at it. It uses the skill." She held his gaze. "But the fencing was twelve years of my life. Twelve years of a sport that punished waste and rewarded seeing what was coming before it came. And when I left it I spent two years doing work that used the physical version of the skill and missed the point of the skill."
"The point being," he said.
"That the skill isn’t about reading rooms," she said. "It’s about being present in something that matters enough to read correctly." She held his gaze. "The fencing mattered. What I’ve been doing since didn’t."
He held her gaze.
"Until three months ago," he said.
She held his gaze.
"Yes," she said. "Until three months ago."
He held his coffee.
"Jade," he said.
"Yeah."
"What are you saying," he said.
She set her cup down.
She held his gaze with the full version of herself, the Jade who had withdrawn before telling him so the telling was clean, who had edited the reports because she couldn’t give Victor the leverage, who had texted him at the Aldine Street coffee shop because it was the right thing to do and not because she needed anything back from it.
"I’m saying I’ve been adjacent for three months," she said. "And I want to know what it looks like from inside."
He held her gaze.
"You already know what it looks like from inside," he said. "You’ve been inside the monitoring structure. You know the architecture."
"That’s the professional inside," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"There’s another kind," she said.
"Yes," he said.
She held his gaze.
"I’m not asking for something I haven’t already decided about," she said. "I don’t ask for things I haven’t decided about. You know that."
"I know," he said.
"I decided three months ago," she said. "I’ve been waiting until the right moment to say it."
"Why now," he said.
She held his gaze.
"Because Mia’s piece went up," she said. "And it described the architecture correctly from the outside. And I’ve been inside it for three months and I know what the piece missed." She held his gaze. "The piece missed the people. Not as subjects. As the reason the architecture exists."
He held her gaze.
"Yes," he said. "That’s what it missed."
"The people are why it works," she said. "Not the mechanism. The people."
"Yes," he said.
She held his gaze.
"I want to be one of the people," she said. "Not a function. Not a monitor. A person inside it."
He held her gaze for a long moment.
He held it the way he held things — completely and without rushing.
She held it back without adjustment.
"Jade," he said.
"Yeah."
"The day you withdrew from the Hale engagement," he said. "Before you texted me. You made the decision on your own terms first."
"Yes," she said.
"That’s the most important thing you’ve done," he said.
She held his gaze.
"Why," she said.
"Because it means the decision was yours," he said. "Not a response to something. Not a move in a situation. Just yours."
She held his gaze.
"This is the same," she said.
"Yes," he said. "I know."
She held his gaze.
"So," she said.
He held her gaze.
"There’s a place I’ve been meaning to go," he said. "On the north side. A gallery. There’s an exhibition of fencing photography from the last twenty years of competitive circuit. It opened last week."
She held his gaze.
"You found a fencing photography exhibition," she said.
"Max found it," he said. "When I told him to look."
She held his gaze.
"When did you tell him to look," she said.
"Three weeks ago," he said.
She held his gaze for a long moment.
"You decided three weeks ago," she said.
