Chapter 2112 -2110: Between a Rock and a Hard Place

The garrison at First Line Pass gradually retreated, while tens of thousands of Demon Clan warriors from the Fire Phoenix camp remained in place.

Pursuit was impossible; the Demon Clan at the Fire Phoenix camp clearly understood that, despite the considerable losses, the Human cultivators opposite them were far from being seriously harmed, and their number of strong fighters outnumbered theirs by several folds. They had no ability to launch a pursuit.

As for retreating.

Clearly, this was not a decision they could make. Just behind them, over ten thousand Wolf Riders were pressing forward, commanded by the Military Governor, forcing them to charge towards First Line Pass.

This was the epitome of being caught between a rock and a hard place.

All the Demons turned their gaze to Chong Xuan, their current central figure. Without him, they wouldn’t know how many would have died today. Even when facing multiple Human strong fighters alone, despite the formidable defense of the Xuanwu Bloodline, the scene was incredibly tragic.

“Retreat.”

Chong Xuan landed, spitting out a mouthful of old blood.

“Master Chong Xuan.”

A few Demons taken into the trusted aide quickly stepped forward when they saw this. With Lord Feng Yang not present, Chong Xuan was their backbone. If anything further happened to him, their fate would be almost indescribable.

Were the past two days’ experiences not clear enough?

“I’m fine, retreat to the camp first.”

“Yes.”

“Order a retreat.”

As the order was passed by the trusted aide, someone nearby took out the Cow Horn Horn and blew a short signal for retreat. The Demon Clan warriors from the Fire Phoenix camp exchanged looks because retreating required a path to retreat, and elite Wolf Cavalry were stationed at their rear.

“Make way.”

Numerous Demons parted to form a path, allowing the Fire Phoenix Guard, who had previously charged at the frontline, to escort Chong Xuan through the formation. Not far away were the neatly arrayed, distinctively armored elite Wolf Cavalry.

The remaining four to five thousand Fire Phoenix Army did not regard the Wolf Cavalry, commanded as Military Governor, and walked straight through.

The mass of Demon Clan cannon fodder swallowed hard, knowing that these Wolf Cavalry would normally spur their War Wolves forward and chop off the heads of any Demon daring to defy orders.

The silent advance of the Fire Phoenix Guard exuded an astonishing ferocity, even without a word uttered.

If the Military Governor’s Wolf Cavalry dared to charge, they were prepared to fight.

They were no sacrificial lambs.

The bloody spirit consolidated from a great battle gave these Fire Phoenix Guards a strong sense of belonging; they feared nothing.

Charging towards First Line Pass meant death, so they couldn’t live, why fear death?

“Captain, these Demon Clan warriors from the Fire Phoenix camp are rebelling; they dare to retreat without order.”

A Demon General remarked to Gu Feng, watching the approaching Fire Phoenix Guard.

Gu Feng still commanded ten thousand riders, but his most elite three thousand Flame Wolf Riders, reformed by Li Feng’s Phoenix Flame, now numbered less than eight hundred after the first day assault on First Line Pass, with most either dead or wounded.

Gu Feng realized the Wolf Commander did this to eliminate future problems, as these Wolf Riders bore the Phoenix Flame Mark. Even though their Bloodline remained that of the Wolf Clan, risks remained.

Even he, now a Demon King, felt marginalized by other Wolfs because his rise was due to the Phoenix Flame, and his body held the Phoenix Flame Fire.

Gu Feng felt stifled but never thought of betraying the Wolf Clan.

Observing the Fire Phoenix Guard opposite them, Gu Feng wondered if the Three Marshals’ decision was correct. These Demons, who had joined the Fire Phoenix camp, hadn’t done anything significant wrong yet were reduced to mere cannon fodder.

Slaughtered by the Humans, slaughtered by their own side.

Within the Demon Clan, it’s survival of the fittest; yet such tactics could only chill the heart. Gu Feng knew it was because Feng Yang wasn’t welcomed in the current Candle Dragon Demon Country.

Under Dragon and Phoenix Co-rule, if the Fire Phoenix Clan sought to regain past glories or spread such legends through the camp, it meant they would face purging.

This was a power struggle.

Gu Feng took a deep breath and spurred his War Wolf to meet the approaching Fire Phoenix Guard head-on.

“Chong Xuan, the Marshal’s order is to fight until dusk before retreating. Now, as the Three Marshals haven’t changed their order, do you intend to defy it?”

Gu Feng knew that today, one side must concede. Pressuring the Fire Phoenix camp into attacking First Line Pass these days let Gu Feng sense the brewing resentment within the camp.

These cannon fodders were not machines but living Demons; ordering them to attack First Line Pass was acceptable, but sending them to die so brazenly was an issue.

Like earlier, Chong Xuan faced numerous strong fighters of First Line Pass alone, with no Demon King stepping out to assist, watching as Chong Xuan was surrounded and beaten.

This was blatant disregard for the Fire Phoenix camp, using Human swords to purge them away.

It was too blatant.

At this moment, Chong Xuan seemed much older, hunched as he looked at Gu Feng: “Captain Gu Feng, our Fire Phoenix camp followed the Marshal’s order to attack First Line Pass. We fought, even suffering heavy casualties, even with no assistance.”

“In just two days, our Fire Phoenix camp lost nearly half at the pass. Are these losses still considered insufficient?”

“Must the Three Marshals push our Fire Phoenix camp to utter desperation, to extermination?”

“We are also part of the Demon Clan.”

Chong Xuan looked at Gu Feng, shouting robustly to evoke countless echoes from the Demons of the Fire Phoenix camp.

Indeed, they were also part of the Demon Clan; why should they be sent to die?

They didn’t deny assaulting the Human Ancestor Dragon City! Even when used as cannon fodder, they held some hope—break the pass and they could earn merits, claim spoils, even elevate their Bloodline.

But now, they were being coerced by their own to die.

The surviving tens of thousands of Fire Phoenix Army united in anger; even if their opponents were Demon Clan and elite Wolf Riders from the Eight Tribes, they were already desperate and couldn’t care less.

Gu Feng observed the murderous intent exuding from the Fire Phoenix Guard, knowing that nothing could make Chong Xuan yield just by brandishing orders anymore.

“Chong Xuan, I’ll have someone request orders. Calm down, or you know the consequences.”

“Someone.”

Gu Feng turned to order his aides to pass on the message.

“Wolf King, continuing to press like this might lead to infighting, causing the Human Clan to laugh at us,” Silver Moon Wolf King Mingyue turned to Yexiu.

Yexiu smiled faintly: “I didn’t expect that old turtle to be quite something. With Feng Yang absent, he became their backbone. However, let the Lion Commander worry about this.”

Yexiu had no intention of sticking his neck out; the front camp revered the Lion Commander, so why should he overstep and cause trouble?

If the Lion Commander felt unhappy, then to eliminate the opponent was his decision, and if afraid of losing face, it would still be the Lion Commander’s issue to compromise, not his concern.
