Chapter 336: Familiar Darkness

The Starfire Realm

Lucifer stood on a broad platform of dark glass, his black hair shifting under unseen forces. Across his field of sight Nyx observed, dark eyes gleaming in the dimness as living shadows slithered half-heartedly down her body in imitation of a cloak. Aeloria hovered near the edge of the platform, arms folded across her chest and silver-streaked hair swirling in an unbroken wind. Three years ago they had come together to an uncertain, uneasy truce after the endless night of duels, pauses, accusations, and finally reluctant acceptance of the truth that none of them would leave the place before they killed the final opposition.

Nyx moved one hand.

The darkness curled inward and then out again in a focused wave that struck Lucifer’s chest. He answered with a sweep of Umbral Throne, pressing his own unyielding night against her offering, and the two forces of darkness met in a stalemate that lasted for a breath. Lucifer changed his posture, threaded Blood Mandate through the construct, and shoved the wave outwards, breaking it into harmless billowing wisps.

"Better," Nyx said, her tone as relaxed as if she were commenting on the weather. "You used to let my darkness set the pattern of the exchange. Again, you’re forcing it to your will rather than waiting to receive it. Now be quiet."

Lucifer spent little time on a reply. He drew a hilt of crimson Genesis onto his right hand while Origin Pulse spilled from his body in a contained shockwave. Nyx weaved to one side through her own shadows, and the pulse scored a shallow furrow in the platform where she had been standing. A spear of pure ending followed, dense enough that the air around it lost its color. Lucifer rippled the blood blade across the edge of Umbral Throne and sent the projectile beyond the space of the platform, leaving a jagged scab of emptiness in its wake that took several seconds to knit itself closed.

Aeloria’s expression remained unreadable, though her gaze tracked the motions in meticulous detail. "You’re still telegraphing the third step of that combo," she murmured. "Nyx sees it."

Nyx arched an eyebrow. "He learns faster than you did at that point."

"Better materials," Aeloria said dismissively. "And a less irritating instructor than you."

A faint smirk twitched at the edge of Nyx’s lips. "You offered him silence and sealing. He receives proper teaching, therefore the outcome varies."

Lucifer exhaled and allowed the constructs to unravel. Three years in their company had removed most of the tension between these two women, though not all of it. They cut at one another in the same ways as they always had, but their patterns had adapted to form a functional space without losing the old sharpness. Aeloria established the baseline for all theoretical possibilities and long-term planning, Nyx shaped the specifics of Lucifer’s raw combat potential, his training with both women informing the details of his actions while broader questions were referred to the scholars. In any case, he had learned to ask fewer questions before he could follow these instructors properly.

Nyx stretched her shoulder, came closer. "Divine Blood Core is steady enough, your control over the domain is satisfactory, but your ability to layer your command hierarchies under stress is lacking. We’ll fix that."

She didn’t wait for an answer. Pitch-black flooded the platform, devouring all other sensation and nearly eliminating the presence of the woman beside Aeloria. Lucifer’s own Umbral Throne lifted in response, but Nyx was already inside his defenses, a spear of ending hovering just inside the line of his throat. He twisted, caught the blow on a hastily formed patch of blood-reinforced bone shield, and sent her back around two steps with a burst of short-range Origin Pulse.

They circled one another carefully.

Nyx applied pressure with the smooth, efficient violence that came from decades of being the apex of existence in her particular space of the great beyond. Each blow was a promise of completion echoing through their bones. Lucifer countered with the accretion technique he had learned from both his instructors, blood constructs layered on domain suggestions which in turn formed the baseline for his tactical pulse spells, canceling Nyx’s rhythmic assault for long enough to knock her momentarily off-balance.

The platform absorbed several fresh impressions and the islands of distant landmasses beyond the sightlines grew further away when the battle’s reverberations reached them.

Aeloria finally spoke again. "Enough."

The blackness peeled away. Nyx withdrew first, her living shadows coiling back around her frame in lazy imitation of clothing. Lucifer remained where he stood, exhaling slowly as the Divine Blood Core gave a single heavy beat before settling into its usual pattern. "You’re approaching the midpoint of True Divine ascension," Aeloria told him. "The distance between you and the Progenitor caste has narrowed more than most of the late survivors will feel comfortable with. That will become important shortly."

Nyx directed a sidelong glance at her. "Not filling him in?"

"He’ll receive what is necessary at the time," Aeloria said firmly. "We both know that the information has limited value unless it can be applied directly."

Lucifer turned his gaze from one woman to the other, reading the implications easily. The patterns of their conversations remained the same after three years despite the growing distance between Aeloria and herself. The scholar withheld, the warden tested, and neither was willing to accept less than full openness from the other. It was no longer worth it for him to press the questions, because the answers always arrived when the weight of the entire realm behind them required an update. Nyx pivoted, returning her focus to Lucifer.

"Same time tomorrow. We move to dual-domain pressure. Bring the hybrid form closer to the forefront without releasing it. I want to see what you can maintain for longer intervals."

Lucifer inclined his head in acknowledgment.

Aeloria already watched the horizon of the starfire realm, her attention distant. It had been a slow progression from the first hints of disturbance through the unfamiliar undercurrents which had reached her ears just now, and the woman tensed instinctively as the sensation returned. Nyx took notice but said nothing. The harmony of their understanding held despite the complications that always surrounded it.

Lucifer extinguished the last echoes of his domain-constructs and stepped down from the platform. Behind him, the two women stood side by side in the light of the glowing core which powered this place, neither companion to the other but still cooperating with a reliability that would outlast the memory of the battle.

The years of waiting were coming to an end.
The training continued.
