Vampire Progenitor System

Chapter 388: Hard Window

The healers gave Lucifer six hours of forced stillness.

He took five.

It left the wound across his ribs sealed enough to be usable pain, not an open failure. Not enough that he could stand in a planning hall without bleeding through the bandages every time he took a deep breath, but enough to qualify as usable.

The lower strategy hall was already full when he got there.

Lucian had the lattice projections open across the main table, while Aeloria stood at one end with restricted starfire notes hovering above her hands. Nyx took up the other end like a shadow in a chair. Lilith was present and upright in her dark authority, enough to make the air seem sharper. Damaris was sitting rather than standing, gold light under his skin still uneven, but his eyes were clear and working. Rhazor, Zane, Anita, and Heron filled out the rest, and the room had the tight silence of people having stopped pretending that they had spare days.

Lucian spoke first. "Outer routes remain sealed from the counter-hunt. No new hunter cells in the last window. That is the only good line in the report. The orb’s climb is still steep. If the pattern holds, we are no longer measuring the threshold in long cycles. We are measuring it in short ones."

Aeloria did not ease into the next part. "A direct repeat of the earlier enclave breach will fail. The being has already seen our wall-breaking method. The outer barrier will be thicker and the inner chamber meaner. If we go in only to free the remaining chained progenitors, we may save people and still lose the universe when the orb completes on the forced schedule."

Lilith’s fingers tapped once against the edge of the table. "Then we stop thinking like rescuers who hope the engine dies of inconvenience. We think like killers with one target. The orb is the threshold engine. The chains matter. The feeds matter. But if the core remains, the being can rebuild the process around whatever density it still holds."

Damaris leaned forward despite the strain it put him under. "There is a difference between damaging a threshold engine and ending one. When we were inside the feed, we felt the orb’s continuity structure. It is not only a storage mass. It has a binding spine that keeps the stolen authority from tearing itself apart. If that spine breaks while the core is under stress, the accumulated density has nowhere stable to settle. It either collapses inward or tears outward. Either result ends the harvest as a controlled process."

Nyx’s black eyes narrowed with interest. "And the being knows this."

"Yes," Damaris said. "Which is why the chamber defenses are built to keep anything strong enough to threaten the spine from ever reaching it cleanly."

Lucifer looked from his father to the projection of the enclave’s last known structure. "So the final strike is not another partial entry. It is a forced path to the spine, under fire, with enough output left at the center to break it."

"Yes," Lilith said. "And if you miss, or if the being intervenes fully instead of through a limited projection, the failure will not be recoverable on this clock."

The room held the truth with no flourish.

Rhazor broke the silence, with a low scrape of claw on stone. "What force do we still have that can make that path?"

Lucian answered with the hard version, not the hopeful one. "Origin support can give you one more full line. Not two." Rhazor is still in. Heron is still in. Anita and Zane can move if their wounds hold. Lilith is active. Damaris can contribute pattern support and limited field work, not front-line duration. Aeloria remains under seal limits. Nyx is available but not endless. Several new progenitors can be asked. Not all will be ready. Not all will survive the ask."

Aeloria added, "Temmy is stable enough to refuse or accept in person. Francisca’s seat is still under residual drag, but she has already chosen the field once. Remu the same. We do not force broken seats into the final cut unless they demand it and can still stand."

Lucifer nodded once. "We ask the ones who can still choose. We do not drag the ones who will only become additional funerals."

Nyx leaned back slightly, darkness curling around the legs of her chair. "And the center of the path still has to be you. The being already named the reason. Your density is the one output in this garden that can threaten the spine hard enough to matter before the chamber grinds the rest of us down."

Ella would have hated hearing it said so nicely. Vina would have hated the calm in the room around it. Luna would have filed the sentence away like a blade. Lucifer accepted it because the board no longer rewarded softer arrangements.

"Then that is the shape," he said. "We build a final strike force around a single objective: reach the orb’s binding spine and break it. Rescue of remaining chained progenitors is secondary to that objective if the two come into conflict. I do not like that order. I am giving it anyway."

Damaris watched him for a long moment. Something like grim pride and old fear mixed in his expression. "You sound like someone who has finally stopped trying to win every version of the war at once."

"I sound like someone who watched the being shorten the clock on purpose," Lucifer replied. "We use the hard window. We recover what can be recovered before it closes. We gather every name that can still matter. And then we end the harvest before the threshold finishes what the being already started."

Lilith’s mouth curved in a sharp, tired line. "Finally. A plan that admits the size of the enemy."

Lucian closed one of the side projections and opened a fresh list. "Then we start the calls. New progenitors. Remaining high-output allies. Support lines. Extraction contingencies if the spine break triggers a chamber collapse. I want first answers before the next orb cycle completes."

Around the table, the survivors of the projection fight and the long road to it went to work on turning a shortened clock into a final force.

Outside the hall, the palace remained under lock and residual smoke from earlier attacks.

Inside it, the hard window had a shape now:

not another delay,

not another edge cut,

but a direct path to the spine of the thing that wanted to finish the world.
