The final roster line stayed blank beneath the first-year crystal, while every other student's fate mark glowed.

Damien waited for the missing name to appear, because the Academy had apparently enrolled a person through an unfinished sentence.

"The student is present," she said, turning the page, "the name was entered before the placement hearing."

"Who entered it," Damien asked, looking at the blank family field, "the ink appears shy."

The registrar searched the enrollment ledger, then found a clean page carrying one fresh line.

{Iven Pell, first-year integrated cohort.}

Nobody in the hall remembered seeing Iven enter, though a chair beside the window now held his satchel.

The satchel contained a wooden spoon, three root vegetables, one salt pouch, and a folded dining schedule.

Raven picked up the spoon, then tested its balance against her thumb.

"The student carries one weapon," she said, looking at Damien, "it has respectable reach."

Iven appeared beside the doorway before Damien could ask where he had been.

He was a narrow student with brown hair, plain robes, and an expression apologizing for taking space.

No fate line surrounded him, not even the faint residue marking ordinary background students.

Iven looked toward the spoon in Raven's hand, then held out his palm.

"That is for soup," he said, accepting it, "please do not sharpen it."

Raven returned the spoon, visibly disappointed by the new restriction.

"You are the roster ghost," she said, studying his face, "can you fight?"

"I can make soup," Iven answered, lowering his spoon, "fighting has not worked yet."

Yuki approached him with a frost lens, then held it beside his shoulder.

The crystal showed Iven's robes, his spoon, and an empty space where his thread should have been.

"The lens detects no endpoint," she said, looking toward Damien, "the student has no assigned conclusion."

Iven glanced at the lens, then touched one root vegetable inside his satchel.

"I have an assigned lunch," he said, offering the vegetable to Yuki, "it is less complicated."

Yuki accepted the root, measured its temperature, and placed it back inside his satchel.

"The lunch is not a fate endpoint," she said, returning to Damien, "the distinction matters."

Damien watched Iven walk toward the dining hall, guided by a schedule no clerk remembered writing.

Shizuka appeared beside the roster crystal, then placed a black note beneath Iven's blank line.

Her note read, {No shadow history, no prior contract, no first appearance.}

Damien folded the note into his pocket, leaving the roster untouched.

"Start a quiet file," he said, keeping his voice low, "no public questions until we know the risk."

Shizuka nodded, then pressed two fingers against his sleeve before returning to the wall's shadow.

The brief touch warmed his damaged hand more effectively than the hall's admission braziers.

'The Story wrote a student without a thread. That sounds harmless, which means it is not safe here.'

The canteen occupied a bright courtyard beneath the Arcanum tower, where first-years received thin broth in numbered bowls.

Iven stood behind the serving table, holding a copper pot nobody remembered assigning to him.

The pot released a smell of onion, winter root, pepper, and something rich beneath the broth.

Raven reached the table first, carrying Damien's bowl in one hand and her own in the other.

"The ghost is serving food," she announced, placing both bowls down, "the Academy has improved its haunting."

Iven ladled soup into the first bowl, then tasted the spoon without changing expression.

"It needs salt," he said, passing the bowl to Damien, "the first batch was too careful."

Damien lifted the bowl, tasted one spoonful, and immediately forgot the roster's blank line.

Vivienne tasted it next, her sword-princess standards visibly preparing an objection.

She took a second spoonful before speaking, which made Raven point at her with delight.

"The soup defeated her," Raven said, leaning toward Damien, "I want the recipe recorded as a victory."

"The broth is balanced," Vivienne replied, taking another spoonful, "do not make this theatrical."

Yuki measured the bowl, then looked toward Iven with a rare open interest.

"The heat distribution is excellent," she said, holding the spoon between both hands, "the texture remains stable."

Seraphina tasted the soup beside Damien, then smiled at Iven as if he had passed a private doctrine exam.

"You have fed my household," she said, placing her hand over Damien's wrist, "the debt is affectionate."

Iven looked alarmed, while Damien covered Seraphina's fingers beneath the table.

"Please do not adopt the cook before learning his name," Damien said, feeling her thumb brush his scar, "the paperwork is fragile."

"Iven Pell," Iven replied, raising the copper ladle, "the name is already on the roster."

Shizuka placed a note beside Damien's bowl, then pointed toward the soup pot.

{Talent: soup, excellent.}

Damien read the line, then looked at Iven's blank fate space through the courtyard relay.

The system panel opened above the pot, gold letters refusing to assign the soup a rank.

[Draft character: unsupervised]

[Student: Iven Pell]

[Fate thread: none detected]

[Recorded talent: soup, excellent]

[Origin: enrollment record incomplete]

[Threat assessment: inconclusive]

[System note: Please do not recruit the soup. It has done nothing wrong.]

Iven stirred the pot, then offered a second bowl to Aurelia when she entered through the royal courtyard gate.

Aurelia kept her separate escort behind the arch, maintaining the distance between her gold line and the household braid.

She tasted the soup, paused, and looked at Damien with open irritation.

"This is better than the imperial kitchens," she said, handing the bowl back, "the wager requires a response."

"You can wager on the cook," Damien replied, touching the edge of her bowl, "the soup remains independent."

The Half-Eye Token warmed between them, while Iven returned to his pot without noticing the royal tension.

The dean checked the canteen roster, the department schedule, and Iven's blank family field.

"Who authorized this kitchen access," she asked, turning toward the assembled students, "the record has no signature."

Iven raised his hand, then pointed toward the nearby pot.

"The kitchen was empty," he said, holding the ladle, "the students were hungry."

The dean looked at the bowls, the happy first-years, and the faculty members quietly requesting refills.

"That is not authorization," she said, accepting a bowl from Iven, "it is a strong argument."

She tasted the soup, then stopped searching for the missing signature.

Damien saw the choice settle across the courtyard, small enough to leave unexplained.

Raven immediately requested combat rights for the soup pot, while Vivienne confiscated her spoon.

"The pot is not an opponent," Vivienne said, holding the spoon away, "you cannot challenge lunch."

"The pot has defeated the entire faculty," Raven replied, reaching for the handle, "that is a combat record."

Iven placed the pot behind him, guarding it as a veteran protected a charge.

Shizuka's shadow slipped beneath Damien's chair, then returned carrying a folded page from the empty roster ledger.

The page held no name, no date, and no author mark, yet a soup stain crossed its lower corner.

Damien placed it inside his quiet file, beside Shizuka's note about missing history.

He did not ask Iven where the page came from, because the student had already forgotten seeing it.

The mystery stayed light enough for lunch, though the blank fate space remained real beneath the jokes.

The first ethics bell rang across the courtyard, ending the soup line before Raven could demand seconds through formal challenge.

Students carried their bowls toward the lecture hall, while Iven followed with the pot covered in a blue cloth.

Damien walked beside Shizuka, their shoulders touching through the crowd's moving robes.

She slipped another note into his pocket without looking toward him.

{File quiet, soup public, student unwatched.}

He folded the note, then let his hand brush hers beneath the crowd's relay light.

"We keep him safe without making him a project," Damien said, matching her pace, "the Academy has enough owners."

Shizuka's fingers closed around his for one step, then disappeared into the next shadow.

The ethics hall doors opened, revealing a new lecturer beneath Malchior's former seal.

The man carried a plain slate, a stack of conduct rulings, and the expression of someone prepared for moral damage.

The dean stood beside him, then introduced the replacement to the first-year cohort.

"This is Lecturer Oren Vale," she said, looking toward the empty ethics desk, "he replaces Inquisitor Malchior."

Oren Vale entered the hall with a book titled {Ethics for Dangerous Students}.

Malchior's replacement had arrived to teach ethics before the first lesson began.
