The red cord led the household through the Academy’s oldest foundation, descending beneath the seven routes toward a warm underground basin.

Sarn walked first, while her nine singers followed without joining hands or allowing their cords to form a shared rhythm.

Mara carried Quiet Teeth, Nix kept the register dry inside her coat, and Cassen watched the route for another ownership line.

Cael held his coin closed, while five red debt knots rested around his wrist beneath the sleeve of his Academy coat.

Riven followed Veska’s bell, hearing warm water move behind the walls before the route opened below the foundation beneath them.

The private gray opened behind his sight, separating the basin’s pressure from the household and showing no owner in the chamber.

The passage ended at a circular chamber where warm water covered the floor and rose around a submerged stone cathedral.

Seven bell towers broke the surface, each carrying a red cord toward the dark water beneath the central nave below.

Sarn stopped at the edge, and every singer behind her lowered their gaze when the water began speaking in borrowed voices.

"It is still awake," Sarn said, while a child’s voice repeated her name from beneath the water.

Mara stepped beside her. "Then it can hear us refuse it," she said, holding Quiet Teeth above the warm surface.

The water rose around the nearest steps, carrying pieces of paper that dissolved before any ink could become readable there.

Cassen drew Giltknife, and the gold blade reflected a different cathedral where every pew held a kneeling student below them.

"The reflection wants witnesses," Cassen said, watching the false pews fill beneath the water.

Nix opened a door across the basin, but the doorway led into another reflection instead of dry ground beyond the water.

Veska listened through the water and pointed toward the submerged nave. "The machine is under the altar," she said.

"We speak our own names," she said. "If the water repeats them, answer with a choice instead of another sound."

The singers obeyed, each saying a different name while the basin returned all nine voices through the cathedral windows again.

Riven felt pressure reach from the altar toward Cassen’s blade, trying to make the first visible rescue belong to him.

The private gray sharpened around Cassen’s Line, showing a proposed ending where Cassen carried Sarn and all nine singers upward.

The cathedral doors opened beneath the water, and a folded machine rose through the nave with three silver throats below.

Riven recognized the rule from the earlier echo, but this Name-Crusher was bolted to the basin and older than its paper body.

The machine spoke through three voices. "One name can carry nine," it said, while the water rose to Mara’s knees.

Sarn stepped forward. "No name carries another without being asked," she answered, keeping her cord separate.

The machine turned its three throats toward Sarn, and the water pulled her below the surface before the singers could reach her.

Cassen moved first, but Riven caught his arm before Giltknife could complete the rescue prepared beneath the old altar below.

"Do not become the ending," Riven said, while the false cathedral brightened around the submerged steps.

Cassen stopped, then pointed toward the singers instead of claiming the center of the basin while the other students waited below.

"Separate the voices," he ordered, directing the singers toward the seven bell towers.

The nine singers moved apart, each taking a tower while Mara and Bram braced the stairs against the rising water.

Cael flipped his coin, and it landed on its edge against a submerged step, holding one broken stair in place.

The debt jumped toward a singer’s unfinished rescue, but Cael entered the water and carried the singer’s cord to the next tower.

The white thread loosened by one turn, while the broken stair collapsed behind him and sent warm water across the chamber.

Nix opened three doors through the reflections, and each door returned a different singer to a different dry ledge nearby.

Ledger called the singers by their chosen names, while the cathedral attempted to combine every answer into one obedient chorus.

Mara struck the water with Quiet Teeth, releasing stored impact through the basin and forcing the false pews to break apart.

The machine’s three throats opened wider, and the water carried Sarn toward the submerged altar beneath the central nave again.

Cassen reached for Giltknife, but stopped when the blade brightened toward his hand and the proposed rescue tightened around him.

"The story wants one carrier," he said, watching the gold line stretch across the basin.

"Then make it carry the refusal," Riven answered, drawing Overdue above the warm water.

The machine repeated Sarn’s name, and the sound pulled at the black mark in her throat like a hand closing.

Sarn surfaced beside the altar and spoke through the water. "I am Sarn, and I choose to remain difficult to own."

The red cords around the basin snapped apart, and every singer answered with a chosen name before the machine could repeat them.

The three throats lost their shared rhythm, but the cathedral roof collapsed into the warm water above the submerged nave.

Bram raised his shield over the nearest singer, while Mara stored the falling stone inside Quiet Teeth without releasing the impact.

Veska rang her bell once, and the warm water divided around the singers, revealing a dry path toward the outer steps.

Cael released his coin, and it landed flat on the submerged altar before the machine could borrow another accident nearby.

The nearest unfinished action reached for Cassen, offering him the role of carrying every body through the dry path below.

Cassen took one singer’s hand, then passed the singer to Mara before the role could settle around his name safely.

The bright line fractured, and Riven cut its ownership path with Overdue before the Claim could close around the rescue.

The cathedral’s false reflection shattered, leaving the real stone towers and the old machine beneath the water below the broken altar.

The private gray opened fully, showing the Claim’s guaranteed owner line collapse into separate chosen rescues around the basin there.

Riven spent 750,000 on Name-Crusher separation, basin stabilization, route insulation, and a protected reserve for Sarn’s chosen name tonight.

The remaining value folded into reserve, and Riven released five hundred thousand stored resonance into the Core before the basin settled.

No one saw the accounting, because the visible chamber held only warm water, broken reflections, and a machine losing its voices.

The Name-Crusher folded inward, its three silver throats closing while the red cords slipped from the submerged towers into silence.

Sarn climbed onto the outer steps, breathing hard while the black mark at her throat remained hers instead of becoming a blank seal.

"It wanted my name to carry everyone," she said, looking toward Riven without seeing the private gray behind his sight.

"Your name carried your answer," Riven replied, while Overdue cooled in his hand above the drying stones.

Cassen helped the last singer from the water, then handed Giltknife to a student who used its flat side to clear rubble.

The gold blade dulled, and the student kept the rescued tool instead of returning it to the assigned hero now.

Cael inspected his wrist, finding four red debt knots where five had rested before the warm water route opened there.

"One chance paid," Cael said, while the coin landed flat beside his wet boot.

"One choice made it payable," Mara corrected, pulling the final singer away from the unstable altar.

Nix opened a dry door toward the Academy, and the reflection beyond it showed no cathedral and no kneeling students.

Veska listened to the machine’s silence, then looked toward a high arch where a silver mask waited in the stone.

"The Patron’s messenger is above us," Veska said, while the mask turned toward the household without a visible face.

The mask did not speak, but a white thread crossed the arch and pointed toward the Academy’s sealed upper routes.

Sarn gathered her nine singers, keeping their cords separate while the warm water drained through the broken nave beneath them.

"We go with you," she said. "The machine has lost its voice, but the person who built it has not."

The household climbed through Nix’s door, carrying wet weapons, four debt knots, and a new rank that remained private to Riven.

Behind them, the basin cooled around the Name-Crusher, while the submerged cathedral kept seven empty towers above the retreating water.
