Villain's Refund System: The Protagonist's Harem Is Mine
Chapter 153 The Spare’s Debut
A door unfolded in the bark where none belonged, a gray man stepping through with a long chain. Ivo trailed behind him, hugging a clipboard to his chest like a shield against the whole dark forest.
"Warden Hesk of the Routekeepers," the gray man announced, "here to supervise a debut."
"I filed the report as promised," Ivo said, chin lifted, "consequences have arrived."
Riven eyed the clipboard, "You filed fast, I’ll give you that."
Hesk ignored the insult, letting the chain drop from his fingers until it hung beside the gold thread. He ran it from the canopy down to Lucas’s chest with a single bored flick of his wrist.
"Forty feet of Claim," he said, "tension acceptable, booked this morning by an office you will not be shown."
"Booked for what?"
"The replacement hero slays the King of Unfinished Things and inherits the vacant fame."
Cassen went rigid, Giltknife dull against his hip, his jaw working around a retort he could not afford. Hesk glanced at him the way a clerk glances at a smudge on a ledger, briefly without apology.
"The fame has been vacant since the moment you stopped using it, naturally."
"I resigned the fame myself, thank you," Cassen said stiffly.
"Then it is available, paperwork abhors a vacancy."
"Fame is not a chair, you cannot just hand it to the next man in line."
"A chair is exactly what it is," Hesk said, "and the next man is already seated."
Lucas stood very still, one hand closed on the brass token, the other drifting toward the plain sword. The gold thread shimmered with each breath he took, tugging his arm a finger-width forward every single time.
"It feels good," he admitted quietly, "the pull in my sword arm."
"Good is how they get you," Riven said, "nobody falls for a trap that hurts."
’He likes it, so the Claim is already working... that’s the cruelest part of any contract.’
The Warden stamped a corner of his clipboard, "The spare will finish in one scene what the villain could not in fifty."
"Forty-nine, I’d like the count corrected."
Ivo clutched the clipboard tighter, whispering a stream of numbers under his breath like a prayer. Hesk silenced him with one raised pale finger, never taking his eyes from the gold thread.
"Per regulation nine the villain is required to—" Ivo said.
"Sit down, Ivo."
Riven stepped between Lucas and the thread, Overdue glowing red-gold at his side like a warning lamp. Its new light pooled across the roots in slow ripples, brightening every time the gold line pulled.
"Cancel the booking," he said, "he isn’t an item on a shelf and he isn’t for sale."
"Bookings are cancelled by the booker... who is not in this forest."
"Then I’ll go find the booker, right after I clean up here."
’An office I’m not allowed to see, a hero I’m not allowed to be... I’m starting to hate that building.’
The ground shuddered before Hesk could answer, roots tearing free from the earth in a sudden spray of dark soil. Orchard trunks lurched upright around the clearing, bark splitting to show cavities packed with faces that never finished a sentence.
"Golems," Veska said, spear leveling, "twelve visible, arithmetic unfavorable."
"Everyone on beat," Riven called, tapping twice on Overdue’s pommel, "and nobody argue with the count."
[ Syncopation: allies on beat | Enemy rhythm: one beat behind ]
Threads of light snapped from his chest to seven friends, each one humming with a bright ordinary pulse. Lucas stepped in a heartbeat later, grinning in disbelief as an eighth thread settled gently against his sternum.
"Eight... I am counting myself."
The first golem swung a trunk-thick arm, but the blow landed a full beat late, tearing only air. Riven slid under it on the offbeat, tapping the pommel once more without breaking his easy forward stride.
"Veska, that was my offbeat," he called, "put your thunder right there."
Veska’s lightning landed exactly there, a white bar of thunder splitting the golem’s chest down the middle. Mara struck in the gap just after, a black blur raking through the crack before it closed.
"Gap taken," she growled, licking a splinter from her claws.
Riven ducked the next swing, "Sap now, Yukine, before it regrows."
"Cassen, left flank," Mara added, "the one with the face like a mailman."
"Dawnblade has it," Cassen answered, slashing a golem’s knee clean through.
Yukine raised one gloved hand, freezing every drop of amber sap in the clearing mid-flow at once. The golems locked in place with their mouths open, faces still straining to finish the last word.
"Frozen assets," she murmured, "holding at forty degrees."
Bram planted his bucket on the ground with a single knock, anchoring the count for everyone nearby. Isolde’s needle flashed once, pinning a falling branch in midair while Cassen’s blade lit from Lucas’s witness.
"I witness: the trunks fall," he said.
Eleven golems shattered in a chain of cracks, bark and amber spraying across the field in an arc. The ridge fell silent, thirty students forgetting to close their mouths for almost the length of a breath.
’Seven friends and a witness... all of them landing on the beat I never had alone.’
Hesk lowered his chain a single inch, the first hint of surprise his stony face allowed all morning. He wrote something short on the clipboard, his pen scratching much louder than the fading thunder ever did.
"Unusual," he murmured, "the debut has been interrupted by a rather loud ensemble."
"Put it in the minutes, Warden, I’d like the credit in writing."
"I keep no minutes on the villain’s side of the ledger, only footnotes," Hesk said.
Veska planted her spear and turned to Riven, soot on one cheek, lightning still crawling over her knuckles. She snapped to attention, speaking in the clipped voice of a court clerk reading out a final verdict.
"I formally request permission to stand watch over Riven tonight," she said, "per courting custom."
Nix stared at her for a count of three before folding in half, wheezing with helpless laughter. She slid down a trunk until she sat in the leaves, tears running freely down both cheeks.
"Per custom," she gasped, wiping her eyes, "and she filed it with the Warden present."
"Granted," Riven said, a little too fast, "but you’re bringing the tea yourself."
"Seconded as a point of procedure," Isolde said, studying her needle with great concentration.
"The floor is the correct watch position," Mara growled, "I will be supervising from it."
"I have drafted a rota," Yukine added, sliding a folded sheet from her sleeve, "chess hours are protected."
"There is no rota."
"There is now," Nix wheezed from the leaves, "I’m the secretary and it’s minuted."
Riven wiped a smear of sap from his jaw, feeling Overdue’s new weight settle comfortably across his tired shoulders. The threads of light faded one by one, leaving a faint warmth beneath his ribs like a banked coal.
"The spare’s debut is approved," Hesk announced flatly, bringing his stamp down on the form.
The stamp cracked across the clearing like a dropped plate, every golem stump twitching in answer.
Lucas’s plain sword slid out of its scabbard all by itself, ringing softly in the sudden quiet. It began to walk toward the King across the roots, dragging Lucas helplessly stumbling along behind it.
