Villain's Refund System: The Protagonist's Harem Is Mine
Chapter 167 The Frozen Note
The song rolled over Solace at noon, a single long note sliding down the river from the north. Carts stopped dead on Anchor Bridge, horses staring at nothing, drivers frowning at roads they no longer recognized.
"Walk faster," Yukine said, her cloak snapping behind her as she ran along the embankment.
"I am walking at tactical speed," Veska said, her spear bouncing on her shoulder.
Yukine threw the words over her shoulder, "Tactical speed is how cities end up forgetting their own bridges."
"Noted," the sergeant said, jogging faster, "I shall file a formal complaint with my legs."
Riven kept pace beside them, tasting copper on the air, the flavor of a thousand borrowed syllables. On the span a baker stood frozen halfway across, a tray of rolls trembling in his hands.
"Where was I going... where did I even start?" the baker whispered to his tray of cooling rolls.
’The bridges are forgetting their riders... next the riders forget themselves.’
The lamps along the bridge went dark one by one, each of them forgetting how to burn. Seven spans crossed the river at Solace, all of them losing their memory of the people carried.
"Do bridges usually forget things like this?" he asked, dodging a runaway cart.
"Only when someone sings them an unpleasant history," Yukine said, jaw set, eyes locked on the water.
A plump herald in royal blue stood on the riverbank with his trumpet, addressing a gathering crowd below. Behind him a line of Crown soldiers kept the lane open, calm as furniture arranged for a banquet.
"By the will of His Highness Prince Caius," Herald Bascomb announced, "the Crown has this crisis firmly in hand."
"The Crown has a trumpet in hand," Yukine said, loud enough for the soldiers to hear.
"My lady, please, the prince has instructed—" Bascomb said, wilting.
"He instructed you to speak, not to help anyone."
She walked past him to the water’s edge, driving Verdict point down into the wet earth beneath her. Frost fanned outward from her feet across the reeds, the mud, the first ripples of the cold river.
"Riven," she said without turning, "I need this song to hold still."
"How still?" he asked, though he already suspected the answer, watching frost curl around her ankles.
"Completely," she said, pulling off her gloves with her teeth.
’She’s about to push Frostcrown past its limit... she knows it, she’s doing it anyway.’
Frost climbed the sound itself, tracing the note across the water and coating each ripple in clear glass. Her breath turned to fog, her knuckles split open, the skin blistering white where the cold bit deepest.
"Hold," she whispered, trembling, "hold, you stubborn thing."
The note froze above the river, a crystal chord hanging like a chandelier carved from pure winter. Every bridge fell silent at once, the baker blinking, the horses shaking their manes, the crowd gasping.
"It is holding," Veska breathed, staring up at the glittering chord, "but she cannot keep it for long."
Yukine gasped through her teeth, "Twenty seconds... perhaps fewer, so hurry."
Riven tapped his chest, threads of light unspooling toward the two women and catching them squarely on beat. Veska’s heartbeat settled into his own, with Yukine’s slower pulse locking in behind it like a cold shadow.
"Do not look at my hands while you count," Yukine warned, "I will lose the beat."
"Wouldn’t dream of it," he said, flexing the hand tied to hers by light.
"Veska, one strike, straight into the middle of the chord," he added, finding her eyes across the frost.
Veska leveled her spear, "Thunder Collateral, interval confirmed."
"On four, and not a heartbeat before," he said, raising a hand to count it out.
He counted aloud to three, then on four she thrust her spear skyward in a streak of white. Lightning ran through the crystal, flaring white in every facet before the whole chord burst into falling shards.

"Strike delivered," she said, lowering the smoking spear, "interval held."
Silence followed, enormous, the whole river holding its breath until the bridge lamps flickered back to life together. On the span the baker looked down at his tray of rolls, then started laughing from sheer relief.
"The Third Princess saved us!" a woman cried from the crowd, hands cupped to her mouth.
The chant caught like dry grass, rippling along the embankment until a thousand voices shouted the same title. Herald Bascomb stood stricken with his trumpet half raised, ignored by everyone as the crowd stepped around him.

"They’re all chanting your title out there like it’s a prayer."
"They are chanting for a rumor of me," she said, wiping frost from her sleeve, "it is not the same."
Prince Caius arrived in a silk coat with Captain Edda at his shoulder, stopping right beside the herald. His smile stayed perfect, though his eyes followed the crowd the way a banker follows a leaking vault.
"My sister has always adored an audience," Caius said mildly, tugging his glove straight.
"She seems to have found a large one, Highness," Edda muttered, hand on her hilt.
"Large audiences can be arranged to disappear," he said pleasantly, "remind me later."
Caius lifted two fingers, sending a runner in royal blue slipping away to whisper orders along the line. Nobody in the cheering crowd noticed, except Edda, whose jaw tightened as she watched the runner hurry off.
"Shall I send someone to follow her across the bridge, Highness?"
"Let her keep her bridge, she always comes home eventually."
Yukine said nothing, sheathing Verdict before she walked onto the empty Anchor Bridge with her hands held away. Riven followed her up the span, the cheers slowly fading behind them until only the river sounded below.
"Let me see your hands," he said, stopping in the middle of the span.
"They are fine, you are fussing over nothing."
"They’re the color of candle wax, give them here."
She held them out anyway, palms up, the raw skin split open and glittering with fresh frost. He wound his scarf around both hands with slow care, for once earning no lecture about etiquette.
"You did not need to do that alone," he said quietly.
"I did, though," Yukine said, looking up at him, "that is the entire point of a gambit."
She stepped closer, closing the last foot between them, then rose onto her toes and kissed him hard. Her lips were cold as a drawn blade, tasting of winter, color flooding back into her cheeks afterward.
"Checkmate," she murmured, drawing back.
"Mine," she added, tapping his chest once with a bandaged finger.
’Frost on her lips, iron under it... she tastes like a threat I’d happily lose to.’
He blinked at her, still dazed from the sudden ambush, "That was a very short game."
"The shortest games are the ones I win, you should remember that."
"I demand a rematch of that kiss!" Ysabel shouted from a rooftop across the river, waving her fan like a flag.
Nix scribbled on her pad beside her, "Noted... round two, Ysabel opens, the Chair is going to bite."
Yukine’s gaze drifted past him to the far bank, where Crown soldiers stood in neat rows at every bridge. A cold realization settled slowly behind her eyes, quiet as a lone pawn sliding into position on the board.
"They were already posted," she said, "before the song began."
