The Day Three vault opened beneath Crown Basin without a route Damien remembered. Four iron doors and one official instruction waited to recover the core before midnight.

’The novel gave Lucas a hidden stair somewhere behind the north wall, except my head now contains enough white space to rent as storage.’

Mina refused every score contact and rebuilt their relay through four independent copper plates, while Isolde scraped blue fungus from the first door hinge.

"This growth dies near ordinary mana, though it leans toward the western door whenever your relay pulses," Isolde said, sealing the sample beneath glass.

"Then it senses the claimant circuit without belonging to our equipment, which makes it more useful than the official map," Mina replied, lowering relay strength.

Vivienne stood between both western doors and pressed one blade against each seam, feeling pressure return through the hilts.

"The left chamber is empty behind three feet of stone, while the right one contains moving air and something dragging metal," she said.

’Current evidence picked a door in thirty seconds, damn, losing the remembered answer may have removed the argument where I trusted it too much.’

They entered right and found a descending gallery lined with sealed display cases, each holding one mineral labeled harmless by tournament staff.

The gallery’s sealed cases ran deeper than the official map showed, each mineral glowing with the same quiet patience.

Blank climbed from Damien’s collar onto Mina’s case, pointing six narrow legs toward a green crystal vibrating beneath its label.

[Correction pressure detected]

"The harmless rock wants attention, which feels familiar after three days inside this mountain," Damien said, drawing Verdict without approaching its case.

Mina sent a relay pulse past the display, causing the green crystal to answer while every other mineral stayed dark.

The green crystal answered before the pulse finished, which meant it had been listening for exactly that frequency all along.

"It is reading our formation and sending the pattern below us," she said, changing two plate positions. "I can feed it a false shape if nobody touches the glass."

’She wants the enemy planning against four people who are not standing where it thinks, which sounds considerably better than chasing a dead route.’

The gallery floor dropped when their false formation reached the chamber beneath, revealing a vault heart covered through silver roots and black-gold moss.

A horned creature emerged from those roots, its body built of tournament stone around a pulsing Correction core.

Its horn carried the same mineral blue as the sample Isolde had scraped from the hinge, which made the whole room feel assembled around them.

[Named trial construct: The Routekeeper]

[Level: 1,060]

[Death Flag: Assigned loss]

[Fatality: 91%]

"The core keeps changing color before each root moves," Isolde said, opening her collected blue fungus. "I can poison the instruction instead of the body itself."

Vivienne stepped into the first attack and split one root without waiting for Damien, forcing the construct to turn its horned head away from Mina.

"I own pressure, so stop reaching across my lane whenever something large becomes rude," she said, catching another root between both blades.

"Your lane currently contains most of the room, though I appreciate the territorial clarity," Damien replied, branding the exposed core.

’No original stair, no remembered weakness, yet every person here knows exactly which part belongs to them.’

Mina fed the false formation through her relay, making the Routekeeper attack positions six feet away while her copper plates climbed the walls.

Isolde ground blue fungus into volcanic salt, producing a gray paste that changed the core’s next instruction from green into white.

"Its roots obey color before pressure," she said, throwing the paste through Vivienne’s opening. "One honest signal should make every limb defend the wrong wall."

The creature folded six roots around an empty eastern corner, exposing its entire underside toward Damien for less than two seconds.

He used Flicker beneath the horn, took one scored claw across his shoulder and let Compounding Wrath build without opening Stay.

The scored claw left a clean line through his coat, which meant the construct had been waiting for exactly that approach.

[Debt: 0 → 506]

[Compounding Wrath: 506 → 526]

’Mina wrote the failure table, so the delayed skill stays closed while this mountain keeps rewriting its own rules.’

Vivienne cut the returning claw before it reached his spine, then used its recoil to open a second line through the roots.

"You have one more exchange before the color resets," she said, driving one blade into stone. "Spend the balance now rather than proving you can endure more."

Damien accepted the call and released Reckoning through Verdict into the chemically exposed core.

[Reckoning: 526 × 2.0 = 1,052]

[Verdict conductance: 1,262]

The first strike cracked the shell rather than killing it, releasing a black route diagram across every wall as the creature rebuilt through stolen stone.

’That should have ended a normal Level 1,060 construct, so the named part is hiding inside the map rather than the body.’

Mina saw the same problem and drove all four relay plates against separate diagram corners, claiming the route as one shared circuit.

"I can make the map carry Isolde’s instruction once, though it burns every plate afterward," she said, turning her control key until copper smoked.

"Burn them cleanly, since I have enough fungus for one final lie and no desire to meet this creature twice," Isolde replied, coating each plate.

Vivienne drove the Routekeeper backward through repeated crossing cuts, holding its rebuilt body inside the diagram while Damien accumulated another honest balance.

The crossing cuts left silver lines across the construct’s stolen stone, each one marking where a root had tried to re-form.

[Debt: 0 → 688]

[Compounding Wrath: 688 → 715]

The four plates discharged together, turning every black route white and ordering the named core to expose itself at the room’s center.

Damien crossed Vivienne’s final pressure line, branded the naked core and delivered Reckoning before the stolen map could choose another answer.

[Reckoning: 715 × 2.0 = 1,430]

[Verdict conductance: 1,716]

The core broke through one clean vertical line, leaving ordinary tournament stone to collapse harmlessly around their feet.

[Death Flag survived]

[Named Correction destroyed]

[Experience gained: 31,600,000]

[System Points gained: 11,000]

[Level: 893 → 928]

[Experience: 142,000 / 928,000]

[System Points: 33,000 → 44,000]

’Thirty-five levels from a route we built ourselves, which is one answer the burned novel can never take credit for.’

Mina recovered three scorched relay plates and placed each inside separate bags, refusing to let tournament staff classify her equipment as disposable course damage.

The scorched copper smelled of the mountain’s own heat, which made the plates feel like the only honest evidence in the gallery.

"These carried the false formation without leaking one command," she said, sealing the bags through her maker stamp. "I want every contact preserved before officials discover cleaning solvent."

Vivienne pulled her blades from the dead roots and checked Damien’s shoulder before examining her own cuts. The coat lining stayed intact beneath a single red bruise.

"You followed the no-Stay restriction while Divergence remained unstable," she said, tightening the torn fabric. "Which removes one argument I expected to have after this fight."

"Please record that rare obedience somewhere Mina can frame above the failure table," Damien replied, testing the arm through one careful rotation. "Nobody will believe that any of this happened without proof."

’They trusted current calls without asking what the original route contained, damn, losing memory hurt less once the room stopped needing it.’

Isolde kept one fragment of the dead core beneath alkaline glass, identifying a route-making enzyme that had no place inside tournament stone.

The enzyme dissolved the tournament label within seconds, confirming the stone had never contained it naturally.

"This construct was designed to manufacture correct answers before punishing anybody who found a different one," she said, locking the sample. "Which feels almost personal toward the condition you are carrying."

"The mountain has disliked my condition since arrival, though I object to being diagnosed by architecture," Damien answered, helping Mina lift her damaged case.

The vault core rose from beneath the dead construct and accepted all four team seals, posting their clear before any rival entered the lower gallery.

[Day Three vault clear: first]

They returned to the surface under national applause, where an Ashe courier waited beside the victory platform with one white envelope held in both hands.

Vivienne read the first line without changing expression, then folded the order around her suspended command seal.

"House Ashe has withdrawn every remaining protection unless I leave this team before tomorrow’s quarterfinal," she said, passing Damien the final page.
