Villain's Refund System: The Protagonist's Harem Is Mine
Chapter 98 Addressed to the Anomaly
The Day Four quarterfinal placed Team Sterling inside a circular archive where every opened door changed the score written above another one.
Blank refused the central aisle and bit Damien’s collar whenever he faced the official route, leaving black threads caught between small silver teeth.
’The map wants us walking straight toward whatever wrote that appointment, so naturally the committee called this an information trial.’
Mina connected four rebuilt relay plates without touching archive wiring, giving each teammate position while the score towers received nothing from her circuit.
"The official doors are copying our movement half a second before we make it," she said, lowering her reader. "Prediction has become another word for theft in this archive."
Isolde tested dust beneath the nearest threshold and found warm volcanic salt mixed through paper fiber.
The salt had been mixed into the fiber rather than dusted on top, which meant the archive was built with the route already written in.
"The archive is printing new routes under the floor, so every opened room becomes evidence somebody created after our arrival," she said, sealing one sample.
Vivienne watched three doors shift before choosing the wall between them, then cut a narrow opening through unmarked stone.
"We are not required to use a door," she said, widening the cut through her second blade. "This wall has made no claim regarding our immediate future."
’Current choices keep insulting the course design, which may be the healthiest team habit we have built.’
They entered a service chamber behind the archive, finding black runes stretched from each score tower toward one pulsing page nailed above the central mechanism.
[Correction detected]
[Quarterfinal execution frame active]
[Fatality: 89%]
The page turned without wind and produced four written versions of their positions, each ending with Damien dead beneath a different door.
"That paper is assigning outcomes through the score network, Mina," Damien asked, drawing Verdict. "Can your relay make us count as one position without transferring control?"
"It can declare shared timing for three seconds, though everybody presses their own field before I send anything," she replied, opening four consent marks.
Each teammate accepted separately, causing the copper circuit to report one formation made from four independent owners.
Four separate consent marks sat inside one circuit, which made the formation the first thing the Indexer could not split.
The page tried splitting their positions and failed, while black ink poured downward into a long-limbed construct built from archive shelves.
[Named Correction: The Indexer]
[Level: 1,140]
’A filing cabinet learned murder and earned a better level than most instructors, damn, education remains unfair.’
The Indexer attacked Mina’s relay first, extending paper blades toward every copper point while its shelves rearranged around the team.
Vivienne held the pressure line, cutting blades before they crossed her shoulders while Isolde spread reactive dust across the floor.
"The ink avoids alkaline powder," Isolde said, breaking two capsules beneath the creature. "I can narrow its movement if somebody keeps those shelves inside the circle."
"I have the shelves, which leaves Damien responsible for the ugly part hiding behind them," Vivienne replied, locking both blades through a wooden joint.
Damien branded the page rather than its constructed body, making every attack against him feed Debt through the actual authoring source.
The brand found the writing rather than the body, which meant every point he fed entered the sentence before the shelf.
[Debt: 0 → 477]
[Compounding Wrath: 477 → 496]
’The page is writing attacks before the body performs them, so hitting wood only argues with a sentence already finished.’
Mina changed the relay timing through one personal key, delaying their declared formation by half a second without moving anybody.
The Indexer followed the false timestamp and drove shelves through empty air, exposing the page above its spine.
"Shared timing ends in three seconds, so cut the author before it learns our separate clocks," she said, holding her smoking plate away from skin.
Damien took one paper blade across his coat, letting the real wound raise his balance before Vivienne opened a diagonal path.
[Debt: 496 → 821]
[Compounding Wrath: 821 → 853]
He released Reckoning through the page’s lower edge, while Isolde’s powder prevented spilled ink from returning into the floor.
[Reckoning: 853 × 2.0 = 1,706]
[Verdict conductance: 2,047]
The page tore through its center, collapsing the Indexer into ordinary shelves while one smaller fragment remained hanging above black residue.
The fragment swayed in the residue, smaller than the page that had produced it, patient as a held signature.
[Death Flag survived]
[Named Correction destroyed]
[Experience gained: 26,000,000]
[System Points gained: 14,000]
[Level: 928 → 955]
[Experience: 735,000 / 955,000]
[System Points: 44,000 → 58,000]
’Twenty-seven levels, one dead filing cabinet and a fragment Blank is staring at as if it insulted its ancestors.’
The surviving paper carried no score data, only one sentence written through the same sliding hand as the first fragment.
The sentence carried no ink residue from the arena, which made it feel less like a document than a message.
[To the Anomaly: revision hearing scheduled]
[Venue: Crown Basin finals broadcast]
[Attendance cannot be declined through destruction, departure or death]
Blank touched the edge and recoiled hard enough to fall from Damien’s shoulder, holding six legs around his wrist afterward.
’It feared the first fragment, but this one carries my label and an appointment, which made fear physical enough to knock it off balance.’
Mina built a second glass layer that did not copy the writing, leaving air between both surfaces. New ink could form freely while her seals stayed clean.
"The page changes pressure whenever Damien approaches," she said, assigning her key and Isolde’s salt lock. "Custody cannot depend on Damien remaining nearby at all times."
"Paired custody works until the hearing decides ownership is another editable detail," Vivienne replied, opening the witness registry. "We need independent records held by people outside this room."
They sent one description to Quillon, one to Feyn and a third through Bram’s grocery network without reproducing the active sentence itself.
’Three witnesses, separate channels and zero complete copies, damn, we are defending reality through extremely paranoid paperwork.’
Isolde compared the sliding hand against the first fragment, finding the final letters pressed deeper where the word Anomaly appeared.
The deeper press appeared at the same letters on both pages, which meant the word Anomaly carried real weight for the writer.
"The writer expressed force through the address," she said, angling the page beneath gray light. "Which may be irritation or an attempt to make the title bind more firmly."
"I prefer irritation, since binding sounds expensive and the system has stopped refunding bad documents," Damien replied, keeping Blank beneath his palm.
Quillon answered within four minutes through a national audit cipher, ordering every arena clock preserved from Day One onward.
His message noted that appointments require a recognized authority, a named subject and proof of delivery, then circled the last condition twice.
"The page believes Blank delivered it when he touched the edge," Mina said, pulling the familiar away from the glass. "Which could explain why your creature reacted after contact rather than before."
’It used Blank as a courier, shit, the little bastard ate Corrections until something higher decided that made it postal service.’
Blank held a stable shape across eight seconds, then opened a mouth too wide for its head and spat one black letter onto the floor.
The letter formed a single D before Isolde’s alkaline powder dissolved it, proving the fragment had started copying Damien’s name through the familiar.
"Nobody lets Blank touch either fragment again, even if he becomes persuasive through additional legs," Vivienne said, wrapping him inside Damien’s spare coat.
"He has never been persuasive, only damp and committed, though the restriction stands," Damien replied, taking the bundled familiar.
The bundled familiar made a small offended sound through the coat, which Damien took as agreement by default.
"It addressed you rather than the team, though it built four deaths before learning our relay could refuse separation," Vivienne said, reading the physical line.
"Then we preserve four current choices before the hearing arrives," Mina replied, placing the fragment under paired glass. "Warning one target does not limit what it may erase."
They burned a copied transcription inside Isolde’s salt dish, but the original appointment remained visible through every ash fragment.
"Destroying information does not cancel the sender, which means preparation requires records it cannot rewrite quietly," Isolde said, sealing the physical page.
’The first fragment described a Desk, this one booked a hearing, and the system still refuses to explain who gets to appeal.’
The quarterfinal board posted Team Sterling through to the semifinal while tournament staff called the destroyed construct an undocumented archive fault.
Above their score, every broadcast clock flickered toward the finals date before correcting itself.
