Chapter 116: What Severin Did Not Know

"Deception Trace."

Nyra’s smoke-black ears tipped forward. She held his gaze.

"I thought you’d pick that."

"Why?"

"Because it’s useful. It still won’t give you what I know."

Severin rested his right hand on the back of the nearest chair. "Explain."

"You’d get the Skill. You wouldn’t get my years with handlers, frightened runners, false names, or people who learned to leave out the important part without lying." Nyra glanced at the table. "Deception Trace can catch deliberate deception around a contradiction. It can’t tell you what the missing truth is, or why somebody worked so hard to hide it."

"Sit."

Severin took the chair on the east side of the table. Nyra sat opposite him and reached down with her left hand, shifting her shoulder bag from the table leg to the floor outside her left ankle. Her utility knife stayed sheathed at her waist.

Alicia remained on his right and slightly behind him. Her silver ears turned toward the closed door, then back into the room.

Severin held his left hand above the clear center of the table.

Dense black mist folded over his fingers. Lamplight dulled against it as the unopened oilskin packet from the tollhouse settled into his palm.

Nyra’s eyes dropped to the packet.

"You kept it unopened."

"You saved it."

"I wanted to know why he threw it."

Severin laid the packet down and opened the oilskin.

Inside was a folded routing slip and nothing else.

He opened the paper along its old crease and flattened the lifting fold with his right fingertips. Near the lower edge sat the angular receiver mark he knew now: Hadrin Voss. Corlan Saye. The same man wearing 2 names.

Beside it was a Guild freight oval with 2 cuts drawn inward.

Severin had seen that mark on freight allowed through a private inner yard, past a route ordinary carriers didn’t use.

Nyra leaned forward but kept her hands off the paper.

"There," she said.

"Which mark?"

Her finger hovered over Voss’s mark without touching it. "This tells the route where the packet is meant to end. That says his paper can pass through a private Guild side."

"Then Voss has Guild access."

"His paper does." Nyra looked up at him. "That’s all this proves. Maybe Voss bought the access. Maybe the person above him owns it. Maybe some clerk sells the mark and never sees the rest. Those are different problems."

Severin pulled the slip a little closer. The marks shared the same sheet, but nothing on the paper named whoever had joined them.

"So the Guild mark gives us a door," he said.

"A private door. That doesn’t make Voss Guild." Nyra tipped her chin toward his mark. "People buy access. They bribe for it. Steal the marks. What matters is who can keep using this without the records biting them later."

Severin looked back at the paper.

"You said someone might sit above Voss."

"I said it was possible. You told me not to climb higher until the evidence did."

"It has."

"Partway."

Nyra sat back. Her tail shifted behind the chair and went still.

"Voss keeps 2 names alive," she said. "That’s harder than buying a guard at a gate. A false name is easy until it touches a book somebody else keeps. Then dates disagree. Deliveries go to the wrong man. A clerk remembers a face under the wrong signature. Eventually the lie starts arguing with the records."

She nodded toward the Guild oval. "A gate clerk can wave a crate through. That doesn’t keep Hadrin Voss and Corlan Saye from colliding on paper afterward. Whoever protects both names needs access deeper than the yard."

"What if the person above him only controls the freight side?" Severin asked.

"Then somebody else still has to keep the names clean. The packet gets through the yard. It doesn’t fix the books."

Severin’s gaze returned to the Guild mark. "Someone stops that from happening."

"Someone has enough access to." Nyra’s ears angled outward. "Could be the person over Voss. Could be somebody that person controls. But if Voss is the receiver we can see, I wouldn’t grab him now."

"Why?"

She gave him a flat look. "Because if you drag him out tonight, whoever keeps his paper clean could know the line is burned before we see where it goes."

"And if we leave him alone?"

"He keeps doing his job." Her eyes narrowed slightly. "Which means he keeps touching the route."

"We don’t take Voss," Severin said. "We watch him. No pressure. No warning."

Alicia answered from his right. "Watch only, Master."

Severin kept his eyes on Nyra. "For this hunt, you run the sources. You decide how they’re approached, what each runner needs to know, and what stays out of their hands. Their reports reach you first."

Nyra stared at him for a heartbeat. "The sources, not the people carrying your orders."

"Correct. You sort what comes back before I see it. What they saw stays separate from what they guessed. The runners still answer to me. Alicia stays with me."

Her gaze touched Alicia and returned. "Alicia’s not part of it."

Alicia’s ear twitched. She said nothing.

"You don’t choose who we take, and you don’t send anyone to hit them," Severin continued. "That stays with me. If you need a source name kept away from the runners, keep it away from them."

Nyra rested an elbow on the chair arm. "And from you?"

"Tell me why. If I still ask, you answer."

Her thumb moved along the wood and stopped. "So I can protect a source. I can’t hide behind that if you ask."

"Exactly."

Nyra’s ears eased forward. "Fine."

Severin folded the slip back along its existing crease, returned it to the oilskin, and closed the wrapper. His left hand settled over the packet.

Dense black mist welled beneath his palm, climbed around the oilskin, and closed over it. When the mist dispersed, the center of the table was bare.

Nyra’s bag remained beneath the table beside her left ankle.

Severin leaned back. "Then tell me where someone has to be to keep Voss clean."

Nyra’s ears went still.

"Inside the Guild records office."
