Over the following weeks, the last zombie territories across the Southern Argenti Forest fell one after another.

Every campaign launched by the Eastern Alliance or the mysterious western kingdom ended the same way, another zombie nest destroyed, another region reclaimed.

The greatest enemy that had plagued the Southern Argenti Forest for generations was nearing elimination.

Ironically... The closer the zombies came to disappearing, the closer two rising kings came to colliding.

---

In the west, inside the war hall, an enormous map covered one of the stone walls. The west had already been painted completely black. The east shimmered in silver. Only one region remained untouched, the Central Territory, a vast wilderness separating the two kingdoms.

A general stepped forward and knelt.

"Your Majesty, our scouts have returned."

"The Eastern Alliance has stopped advancing. They’ve stationed their forces along the eastern border of the Central Territory."

The cloaked ruler studied the map before a faint smile appeared beneath the hood.

"So... they’ve reached the same conclusion as us."

The general frowned.

"Should we launch the first attack?"

The ruler shook their head.

"No. The first to move becomes the first to make a mistake."

A slender finger rested upon the Central Territory.

"Let them come. If Vikram is worthy of ruling the east... he’ll understand why I’m waiting."

---

At the same time, inside the Mist Pack’s council hall, the atmosphere was equally serious.

Elder Rowan broke the silence.

"Our scouts report that the western army has halted. They’ve fortified every route leading into the Central Territory."

Another elder added, "They haven’t advanced for three days. They’re waiting."

"No. They’re inviting us to make the first move."

The Mist King nodded approvingly.

"A reckless ruler would have charged straight into the Central Territory. But this one understands war. If either army attacks first... the other gains the advantage."

Everyone in the hall understood. Their greatest opponent wasn’t a zombie. It was another king.

---

That night, Vikram stood atop the watchtower overlooking the endless western horizon.

Kara climbed onto the platform and leaned against the railing beside him.

"So... you’ve finally found someone who can match you."

Vikram smiled.

"Perhaps. I’ve heard nothing but victories. They’ve united the west almost as quickly as I’ve united the east. They’ve never suffered a defeat."

Kara folded her arms.

"Worried?"

Vikram laughed softly.

"No. Just curious. What kind of ruler makes an entire kingdom stop advancing... simply because they know I’ll do the same?"

Vikram felt genuine anticipation.

---

On that same night, a lone figure stood atop the highest tower of the western capital.

The moonlight illuminated a black cloak fluttering in the cold wind.

Golden eyes gazed silently toward the distant east.

"So..." A faint voice drifted into the night.

"Vikram, I wonder, whether you’re truly worthy of all the stories I’ve heard."

The figure slowly turned away.

The cloak concealed everything, even the ruler’s identity.

Only the moon bore witness.

---

The stalemate between the Eastern Alliance and the Western Kingdom lasted an entire week.

Neither side dared cross into the Central Territory. Across the vast plains, tens of thousands of werewolf warriors stood locked in a silent, tense confrontation. Every day, scouts returned with the same report, both armies were digging in, reinforcing their positions, yet refusing to make the first move.

Inside the Mist Pack’s council hall, heated arguments had raged since dawn.

"If we invade first, we’ll be fighting on ground they’ve already studied."

"Then are we supposed to stand here forever?"

The voices grew louder until Vikram suddenly rose from his seat, sweeping his gaze across the gathered kings and elders.

"Tell me something," he said quietly. "If this war begins... how many of our people will die?"

No one answered.

Vikram continued, his voice calm yet firm. "Ten thousand? Twenty thousand? We’ve spent years reclaiming this forest. I’m not throwing away those lives for a crown."

He looked directly at the Mist King.

Even the most aggressive commanders lowered their heads. No one could deny the truth.

Vikram met the old king’s eyes.

"If a king wishes to send his people into battle... he should first be prepared to stake his own life."

A flicker of realization crossed the Mist King’s face.

"You’ve already made your decision."

Vikram nodded.

"I’ll challenge the Western King."

The declaration exploded through the hall like thunder.

"No!"

The Mist King slammed his palm onto the table, cracking the hardwood.

"You are the heart of this alliance. If you fall, everything we’ve built falls with you."

The Sand King immediately agreed.

"You no longer belong to yourself, Vikram. Every pack under our banner depends on you."

Vikram met their eyes without hesitation.

"And that’s exactly why I’m the one who has to go. If I hide behind my warriors while asking them to die for me... then I have no right to call myself their king."

No one spoke again.

The elders finally understood. Vikram had never intended to gamble with their lives.

He intended to gamble with his own.

After a long moment, the Mist King let out a slow sigh.

"What challenge are you proposing?"

Vikram answered with unwavering conviction.

"The Rite of the Moon."

---

The hall erupted into shocked whispers.

The Rite of the Moon was the oldest law of the Southern Argenti werewolves. Before kingdoms existed, rival Alphas settled territorial disputes through single combat while both armies remained outside the battlefield. Victory belonged to the stronger king, and with it came the defeated ruler’s claim.

For centuries, the sacred rite had prevented countless civil wars.

Although generations had passed since anyone last invoked it, every elder present understood its authority.

The oldest elder slowly rose to his feet.

" If the Western King accepts... the Rite will decide the future of the Southern Argenti Forest."

The hall became silent once more.

This was no ordinary challenge.

It was a wager that would decide the future of the entire forest.

---

That afternoon, Vikram personally drafted the challenge.

The letter contained no threats. No insults. Only a king’s resolve.

To the Ruler of the Western Kingdom.

The zombies have taken enough from our people. I invoke the Rite of the Moon. Let us decide the future of the Southern Argenti Forest with our own strength instead of sacrificing our warriors. The victor shall become the rightful ruler, and the defeated side shall honor the ancient law.

—Vikram, Silver Alpha of the Eastern Alliance

After reading the letter once more, Vikram pressed the silver wolf seal into molten crimson wax. The royal crest marked the challenge as irrevocable.

He handed the scroll to the fastest scout in the alliance.

"Deliver this directly into the Western King’s hands."

The scout accepted the order without a word.

Moments later, a giant dire wolf burst from the camp, racing across the plains at astonishing speed.

Every warrior watched until both rider and beast disappeared beyond the horizon.

---

That very afternoon, the scout returned.

He strode into the council hall and knelt before Vikram, his cloak still dusted with the road.

"My King," he said, voice ringing through the vast chamber, "the Western King has replied."

The hall fell instantly silent. Every elder, warrior, and advisor held their breath.

Vikram accepted the black scroll. A golden wolf beneath a crescent moon was embossed on the heavy wax seal. With steady fingers he broke it open, scanned the contents in silence, then passed the parchment to the Mist King.

The old ruler’s voice echoed across the hall as he read aloud:

To Vikram, Silver Alpha of the Eastern Alliance,

Your proposal honors both our ancestors and the warriors who have bled to reclaim this forest. I have no desire to watch werewolves who survived the zombie plague slaughter one another for a crown.

Therefore, I accept your challenge. Two days from now, at sunrise, we shall meet in the Valley of the Moon. The victor shall unite the Southern Argenti Forest beneath one banner.

— The Ruler of the Western Kingdom

There was no signature, only the imprint of the golden wolf seal.

The oldest elder rose slowly to his feet, his ancient joints creaking. "The challenge has been accepted," he declared, voice trembling with both gravity and anticipation.

A fierce smile spread across Vikram’s face.

The battle that would decide the future of the Southern Argenti Forest had finally been set.

News of the ancient Rite of the Moon spread through the forest like wildfire carried on the wind.

---

The day before the duel, Vikram stood at the entrance of the Mist Pack’s territory. The Mist King, the Sand King, Queen Lyra, and the elders had all gathered to see him off.

The Mist King stepped forward, holding an old silver necklace from which a polished white fang hung. With great care, he placed it around Vikram’s neck.

"This belonged to your mother," he said softly. "She wore it on the day she married your father. Today... it belongs to you."

Vikram’s fingers closed gently around the ancient fang, feeling the weight of generations in his palm.

The Mist King rested a weathered hand on his grandson’s shoulder. "You’ve already become a greater king than I ever was. No matter what happens tomorrow... I am proud to call you my grandson."

For a long moment, Vikram said nothing. Then he stepped forward and pulled the old king into a tight embrace. The Mist King smiled and returned it with equal strength.

Nearby, even the usually stoic Sand King could not hide the faint smile that touched his lips.

No one spoke again. There was nothing left to say.

---

In the western capital, a cloaked figure stood alone atop the highest palace balcony, gazing out over the moonlit kingdom.

A trusted general approached from behind and bowed deeply. "Your Majesty. Everything is ready."

"Good," the figure replied. "The Valley of the Moon has waited centuries for another King’s Duel."

The general hesitated. "Will you truly face him alone?"

A soft, confident laugh drifted from beneath the hood. "Our ancestors created this rite. I will not be the one to dishonor it."

As the night wind swept across the balcony, a few strands of long golden hair slipped free from the cloak before vanishing once more beneath the fabric. The ruler’s eyes remained fixed on the eastern horizon, gleaming with quiet anticipation.

"So... tomorrow I finally meet Vikram," the Western King murmured.

The moon disappeared behind dark clouds.

Tomorrow, two kings will enter the Valley of the Moon. Only one would leave as the ruler of the Southern Argenti Forest.
