Way of Overlord

Chapter 722: A New World, A New System

  • Next Chapter

There is many stories and anecdotes of the Khan that he heard from those veterans.

Most of these veterans are the veterans that followed the Khan in the beginning

They are also those soldiers who were injured in the Khan campaign. Those who are injured become instructor.

They imparted their experience and they are given salary by the court.

Though, Kultai knows he could not believe everything he hears from these veterans.

He already learned that these veterans sometimes could boast and could sometimes even lie, exaggerate things and sometimes even downplayed things

Kultai shakes his head

Those are the concerns of the people above him

His concern is making his reputation known.

And that was the concern he had when he register himself on the arena

He knew he had to do something or he might not even have a spot when the Khan rides toward the east

This year, there were many famous warriors in the region that basically come and recruited by the Khan army.

The more stronger the Khan became; the more warriors came to him and work under him

Some of these warriors are so famous, that sometimes, the general themselves come to see them.

But regardless of how they were treated before, once they accepted the Khan offer and become part of the army, then you must follow the rules of the army.

Fame and reputation outside of the kingdom no longer matters.

And these warriors that came to surrender or came to be recruited also knows this and the reason they came is because no matter how romantic some people think the life of a wandering warrior is, there is also hardship

Most of these warriors are all sell sword wanting to give their service to a good lord that could support them

As for Kultai since he did not have any reputation he had to create one and that is how he ended up fighting in the arena of the wrestling houses.

It is well known to the people of the capital that the higher ups in the army sometimes frequented the wrestling arena to seek talent and powerful men that could be recruited.

Kultai however never expected to be so easily recommended.

Of course, recommendation is one thing, and merit is another.

This is not like Yan where if you are recommend by some powerful and influential men your career is already smooth sailing.

You have to fight and reach the top and in the Khan army it is possible to do so. After all, Mukhulai one of the Khan strongest general isn’t his starting point is even lower than him?

Mukhulai is a former slave.

But since he was appointed to become one of the Great Generals of the Khan, he had never lost a battle and never lost a war

It has been a week.

He is given his armours, his weapons, he is to know his fellow soldiers, and then he is also to know the rules and laws of the army

It is very different from the warband of his clans and his tribe.

At first he felt that it is a bother.

But then he had to acknowledge one thing.

Maybe it is because it is like this that the Khan army could win all battles.

Kultai had learned many things he had never learned before.

The army has a highly organized military structure with a hierarchical command system

The Khan called it tumen. There is ten thousand men leader, one thousand men leader, one hundred men leader and ten people leader.

He simplifies it because he could not remember all the titles.

One thing that he had recognized after training under this system is that it is very flexible and coordination between the fellow soldiers become even more cohesive and not chaotic.

Everyone follow their orders and everyone knows what they should be doing

As for recruitment, it is said that the Khan wanted to implement a system of mass conscription.

Every able bodied men is required to serve in the military but it is said that the Grand Chancellor Mayeux objected to this

No one knows what the Grand Chancellor and the Khan said but in the end, while there is mass conniption, there is not yet a mass consumption of every able bodied men.

Instead the Khan seemed to focus on quality and weapon forging and armor forging. This is the rumours he heard when talking with the veteran soldiers.

But just because the Khan did not make it a policy did not mean that the kingdom did not have people coming to become his soldiers.

Instead, the Khan probably possessed one of the largest army in the entire Southern Great Steppe.

If one considers the west following his orders, then it is even more so.

The west are all but conquered and those who are not yet conquered would be conquered sooner or later

The others are not a threat. A year ago when the Khan subdued the Cha Ner Ul alliance, that is the backbone of the western tribes.

After that, the west could no longer escape. They would have to wise up and surrender or choose a policy of appeasement toward the Khan

Kultai sighed as he then look at the trinkets on his table. And he smiles.

"I should buy something. If my brothers are correct there would be battles to be fought this spring"

He also heard the news from the east that things are getting even more chaotic there.

Kultai was shocked in the beginning when one could gain an information about the east in only a few hours

It would have taken days or weeks before.

It is said that the Khan had established a highly efficient communication system

He called it Ortoo. Sometimes people called it yam. It means route.

It is a word of Mayeux people

From what Kultai understand it is a network of relay station and messengers and this is what allowed the rapid communication and allowed the Khan to quickly deploy his troops all over the Southern Great Steppe

This is the thing he wanted to learn and understand.

Before he was at awe because of the power and prestige the Khan commanded. But knowing more about the Khan, the more awe he felt for this person

Kultai felt like he is living through history right now. And he believe that the Khan would surely have his story told on the campfire of the tribes in the Steppe even a hundred years from now

The Khan had done what is only talk about in the times of the Old Empire. When there was Qayan and the old Emperors of the Steppe

But the emperor in the Steppe is not like the emperor in the other settled communities. As for the Khan, his method is more like the method of the emperor of the settled communities around them

As for Kultai, whether the Khan wanted to be like the old rulers in the stories or like the emperors around them, it did not matter to him

Because what Kultai wanted is to be one of the people mentioned in those stories and song.

Young people.

They are always idealistic.

This lies their weakness and this lies their strength.

They are not yet too wise to know certain things are impossible and not too old to have their heart dead

Sometimes, only with traits like this that they would be able to do the impossible.

The old is wise but sometimes that wisdom prevent them from trying the impossible.

And since no one is trying to do the impossible, then it surely become impossible. After all, nothing ever happens by not doing anything

The young still have that naivete and it is the young that could move it

They could wreak havoc and destroy the world or they could hold up the sky and protect it.

Kultai learned new things every day. From the rules and laws to the system that is in the military of the Khan.

It is said that the Khan has shadows around him. It is usually mentioned with hushed tones. Spies that hid in the shadows.

No one knows who they are or what they do and how they do what they do but the veteran soldier simply said these people give them the fright

But the veteran soldiers also said that these shadows give the frontline warrior a lot of information like the supplies wagon and important point to attack and important point to avoid.

Kultai smiles as he thought of all this.

He got up from his sea and walk out from his tent. Outside his tent, he looks around and see his fellow soldiers and he greeted a few of them

He smiles

"This is a new day for me. I am not feeling sore after waking up" he mutters with a smile

Kultai had endured many harsh training to be recruited but he did not feel angry or frustrated.

Instead, he felt very fulfilled right now.

The Khan promote people based on merit.

Promotion and rewards are based on the skill and achievement. There is no use of talking about social status or lineage in the war tent of the Khan

It motivated all the warriors under the Khan. And for a person like Kultai, there is no place that is more suitable for him to become a warrior than this place
