WAYFARER: CLAIM THE UNCLAIMABLE

Chapter 50: UNINTENTIONAL FAMILY

  • Next Chapter

The enormous entity had stopped moving. By the time Sio fully steadied himself, every eye across its body was fixed on him. Some were buried between folds of dark flesh, others opened along tentacles thick enough to crush buildings, but none of them watched the city anymore.

The creature that had ridden on Sio’s shoulder outside shifted as its body continued expanding. Dark limbs unfolded from a shape small enough to cling to him into something that needed most of the street, and Sio stepped aside when one limb struck the pavement where his foot had been. "Right. You’re only portable outside."

The juvenile barely acknowledged him. It stared at the entity ahead, body held strangely still, then released a series of clicks Sio had never heard in the real world. The enormous entity answered with a low vibration that passed through the stone beneath his boots, and the juvenile immediately ran.

Sio reached after it too late. It crossed the street in several long movements and climbed directly onto one of the mother’s lowered tentacles. He expected violence almost by habit, but the larger creature lifted its offspring slowly while another limb curled beneath it.

The difference unsettled him more than another attack would have. He had seen those same tentacles strike hard enough to shake the city, yet now they guided the juvenile closer with absurd care. The baby pressed itself into the larger body and made another burst of sounds, some sharp and quick, others deep enough that Sio felt them in his ribs.

For a while, he simply watched. There was no System translation telling him what they were saying, and he was glad for that. Whatever passed between them belonged to them, not him. The first time he had seen the entity, it had been terror given shape, but watching it curl protectively around the juvenile made that memory harder to keep simple. Of course it had to become complicated. Nothing terrifying is allowed to remain conveniently terrifying.

A smile tugged at him as he watched one enormous tentacle support the juvenile’s weight. "So you can be gentle. That’s actually nice to know." Several of the mother’s eyes turned toward him at once, and the smile faded. "Right. Gentle with family. Important distinction."

The nearest tentacle snapped toward him, and Sio almost opened a portal before stopping himself. The last time the entity had tried to harm him here, the Claim had intervened. If that rule still existed, dodging would tell him nothing; if it did not, he was about to make a very educational mistake.

The tentacle stopped less than an arm’s length from his chest. Something invisible rippled between them, and the impact threw dust from the walls on both sides of the street.

〈 CLAIM ATTEMPTING TO BREACH CONTRACT 〉

〈 SAFETY BARRIER ACTIVATED 〉

〈 HOST PROTECTED FROM CLAIM 〉

Sio stared at the limb pressing against the unseen surface, then looked toward the entity. "Still works. Good. I’d have preferred to test that with something smaller." The mother pushed harder, but the barrier did not move, though the road beneath Sio trembled from the pressure.

Before he could say anything else, the juvenile dropped from its mother and landed between them. It struck the barrier from the other side and spread itself across the space in front of Sio, facing the larger creature. A sharp click burst from it, followed by a longer vibration unlike the happy noises it made when stealing food or climbing onto him.

The mother went still and answered with a low sound that rolled through the street. The juvenile responded immediately, planting itself more firmly between them while one of the mother’s tentacles curled toward it. Instead of accepting the touch, it shoved the limb aside and clicked again.

Sio stopped smiling. He could not understand whatever passed between them, but the little creature had left its mother and placed itself between Sio and something that could have crushed it without effort. "Are you actually defending me?" he asked quietly, though the juvenile did not turn around.

Whatever it was saying seemed entirely directed at its mother, whose many eyes shifted past it toward Sio. For several uncomfortable seconds, nothing moved except the spheres circling the enormous creature in slow, silent paths. Then the attacking tentacle finally withdrew, and the invisible barrier vanished with it.

Sio released the breath he had been holding. "I knew she couldn’t hit me," he told the juvenile when it turned toward him, because admitting otherwise would have given the creature far too much satisfaction. The juvenile pushed its head into his chest and forced him back a step, then did it again when he steadied himself.

"That proves nothing. Also, you are much heavier here." Sio caught the sides of its head with both hands while it answered with a pleased click and remained pressed against him.

Something changed behind the scar beneath Sio’s right eye. It was not pain and did not resemble the violent pressure that accompanied his earlier changes. The connection simply settled deeper, like tension leaving something that had been pulled tight for too long.

〔 CLAIM INTEGRATION INCREASED 〕

〔 CLAIM INTEGRATION APPROACHING COMPLETION 〕

〈 HOST CAPACITY INSUFFICIENT 〉

〈 FULL INTEGRATION RESTRICTED 〉

Sio read the messages twice. Previous increases had come after survival, combat, or forcing some new response from the entity, but this time he had barely done anything. His hand rose to the scar beneath his eye as a thought settled in. Maybe that was the problem.

For most of his life, a Claim had meant ownership: find something, understand it enough, make it yours. Even after learning how badly that idea fit the thing living inside his soul, he had still approached integration like another locked door he could eventually force open. Nothing here had been forced. The juvenile had chosen him, its mother had chosen to stop attacking, and the Claim had moved closer because of it.

"That seems dangerously close to emotional growth," Sio muttered. The juvenile clicked against his side, and he pointed at it. "You keep your opinions to yourself."

The mother began moving again. Several enormous spheres continued orbiting her, each following the same slow path Sio remembered from earlier visits, until one of them suddenly slowed. Sio watched it leave the orbit and immediately felt his stomach tighten.

"No. We have one." The sphere descended between the mother’s tentacles until it hovered above the street, almost as tall as Sio in this place. Its surface was smooth and dark, painfully familiar after the first egg had followed him into the real world.

He stepped backward, and the sphere followed by a fraction. Sio gestured toward the juvenile beside him. "Look at it. Healthy. Loud. Eats everything. We succeeded."

The mother only watched while the sphere lowered until it rested in front of him. The juvenile immediately circled it with enough excitement to remove any hope that this was merely decorative. Sio looked from the egg to its mother and sighed. "Damn. You really are making me family after all that assault."

He placed his palm against the surface, and a crack appeared beneath his hand before he had even applied pressure. Sio froze as another fracture spread outward. "I barely touched it."

The shell opened along several jagged lines while something shifted inside. Pieces fell across the road, and a second creature slowly unfolded itself from within, similar to its sibling but calmer in the way it moved.

It paused after emerging, taking in Sio, the juvenile and the enormous mother before crawling directly toward Sio. He shifted half a step aside, but it corrected its path and pressed itself against his leg. "You have an actual mother standing right there."

The hatchling remained where it was while the older juvenile approached, inspected it closely and gave it one careful nudge. The newcomer barely reacted, keeping most of its body against Sio as another System notice appeared.

〔 RESPONSIBILITY FULFILLED 〕

〔 OFFSPRING OF CLAIM PROTECTED 〕

〔 CLAIM INTEGRATION INCREASED 〕

Sio stared at the messages until a much worse thought reached him. He slowly looked upward toward the remaining spheres circling the mother, then decided against counting them. "Whatever you think is happening here, I am not opening a nursery. I need that understood before this becomes a pattern."

The mother turned away and began moving deeper into the city. Sio pointed after her, but she did not slow. "Walking away is not an answer."

The spheres followed her between the buildings, but after several steps Sio noticed something else changing. The pressure that had always hung over the nearby streets was receding with her. A road that had previously bent back toward the same square now continued between unfamiliar buildings, while a passage that had always dissolved into pale blur opened into a long avenue lined with dark windows. Distant towers sharpened against the strange sky.

Sio stopped speaking as the realization settled over him: the city had never been empty; it had been withheld. As the mother disappeared deeper inside, more of it revealed itself—bridges between distant structures, narrow alleys, terraces high above the streets and roads extending farther than Sio could follow with his eyes. Nothing invited him forward, yet nothing pushed him back either.

The first juvenile immediately started toward one of the newly opened streets. Sio caught one of its limbs before it had taken three steps, while the second remained quietly against his leg. "No. Absolutely not. We are not exploring an impossible city five minutes after I accidentally hatched another child. Even I have limits."

The juvenile turned toward him as if personally offended. Sio looked from it to the quieter hatchling, then toward the streets waiting beyond them, and curiosity pulled hard enough that he almost hated himself for feeling it.
