Chapter 309: The Little Sister’s Role

I teleported us back to my Penthouse, feeling a little worn out by now.

Not physically of course, more of mental fatigue than anything else.

I stretched my arms over my head and went over to the couch to collapse onto it, groaning as I did so.

Without even a moment’s hesitation, my sister immediately jumped onto the couch and landed on top of me, knocking the wind out of my lungs.

If I hadn’t had my enhanced strength and durability, that would have definitely hurt.

I tilted my head down to scowl at her, only for her to pry my mask off my face to smile innocently at me.

"What you want?" I muttered, slipping a little into my Singlish dialect out of annoyance.

Her smirk widened, "You never spend time with me these few days leh... You even make me sleep somewhere else. Bully me sia."

My Guardians were looking pointedly in my direction, clearly finding amusement at how my sister was treating me.

"Do you guys need something else?" I asked, not so subtly indicating that they were dismissed.

Dan grinned and gave me a wave, "Eh, I guess I should go and check on my own family then."

"I’ll... I’ll have to hand over the notes and stuff to my sisters!" Maylene excused herself quickly.

"Umm... I... I also... Have to check the plants..." Liliac muttered almost inaudibly.

The three of them left quickly, but Olivia remained where she was as she stepped closer to me.

"My Lord, I have updates on the other Guardians who have been sent to deal with rifts overseas. Would you like to hear them?"

I was going to sit up on the couch but Hui Zhen remained on top of me, not willing to move as she sprawled herself on top of me.

I looked down at my sister and she just shot me a smirk and I decided it wasn’t worth fighting her over this.

"I guess... Just tell me if they have any problems..." I sighed.

Olivia nodded in understanding, "As far as problems go, there are none. In fact, all of them should be returning soon."

I perked up, "That fast? You’re telling me they all completed their task in subduing the Gatekeeper of the rifts they got assigned to?"

"That’s correct, my Lord."

"All at the same time?"

"It does seem so, my Lord. I believe all of them had been trying to compete on who could complete their rift the fastest and return here first, so they were incentivised to do things quickly."

I blinked at the red Oni, "That’s the first I’ve heard of that."

"It was something they decided amongst themselves, my Lord. I have also only recently come to know of it through Avatasia boasting it to me."

I guess some friendly competition was fine between my Guardians, as long as it remained just being friendly competition.

That’s why I had to make sure, "Was there anything being wagered for this competition of theirs?"

Olivia paused before frowning slightly, "I will find out for you, my Lord."

I nodded at her and she stepped away, moving to join the other Guardians at the lift and leaving me alone with Hui Zhen.

Only when the lift doors shut did I direct my attention back to my sister who was still laying on top of me, looking like she found her new bed.

"Can you get off me now?"

"Mmm... I douwan leh. You so comfy~"

She slapped my abdomen as though to make her point.

I let out a sigh, leaning back onto the armrest since I was too mentally exhausted to do anything about her.

Hui Zhen grinned as she realised I wasn’t going to throw her off and snuggled herself closer to me, laying her head on my shoulder.

"You remember... Last time we would sleep together like this?" She asked.

"That’s when you were like what? Six?"

"Where got? I think until primary school still have leh."

"Because you keep crying about it so I had no choice."

"And also... When I was sad. You also hug me like this..."

I paused, remembering the past with her.

She was kind of the sporty and popular girl in her school, but that also came with its own share of hardships. Rumours and expectations followed her and one time her team lost against another school in a basketball competition which ended with her teammates blaming her and spreading some really nasty rumours about her.

She came back crying and I just pulled her in like this and let her cry in my arms until she calmed down.

I won’t say what I did to those teammates of hers but I got them to sort out the rumours for her and they never gave her problems after that.

"What are you getting at?" I asked, giving her a look of suspicion.

"Aiyah, you still need me to spell it out for you meh? When I sad you hug me, so when you sad, you can come hug me also."

I scoffed, "I’m not sad."

"Sure you’re not. You go and give that speech and everything about those people dying, you think I don’t know ah? I still remember when you got sad because some other guy in your party or whatever got killed in one of those expeditions leh. I not that stupid hor."

I let out a sigh, "I’m fine... It’s no big deal."

She reached up and flicked me on the nose, making me jerk back though it was more of a reflex action out of surprise than it being painful.

She shushed me, "Gor... You always so serious... How many times I tell you already? You always try to shoulder everything, but who shoulder anything for you?"

I rolled my eyes, "You know the saying. With great power--"

"Shaddup lah, you’re not going to quote that at me, ok? I’m serious hor... You always try so hard to do everything by yourself. Even when now you got so many people literally worshipping you, you still act like you alone."

I didn’t really have anything to say to her in response to that since I knew it was true.

Like always, I believed that having the power meant that you have a responsibility with that power to do something with it. And because I was the older brother here, my parents always made sure that I knew I had a duty to protect my sister.

Hui Zhen patted me on the cheek again, "You know... You can just depend on me also right? I not some little girl anymore, you know? I can take care of myself now. And if you want me to help you also, I can, you know? Look at you, you can’t even use my power right and you think you can go save the world yourself ah? Big talk for someone who can only summon naked clones of yourself, Gor Gor."

Leave it to her to say stupid stuff like that.

I went ahead to flick her on the forehead, causing her to let out a yelp of pain.

"You really don’t know when to shut up, don’t you?" I rolled my eyes at her, though there was no heat in my admonishment.

She giggled while rubbing her forehead, "Heh~ Only the little sister can bully her big brother what. So no one else can make you sad but me!"

"Sure, sure... You’re still sleeping downstairs while those two Mortal Goddesses are here though."

"Wahhhh?! Whyyyyy? I your sister leh! Why you treating them better than meeeee?"

I didn’t answer her and merely stroked her head, causing her to quieten down immediately.

I thought back on the moment where I had been talking to the centaur right before the explosion.

He probably didn’t even know he was dead before the explosion consumed him.

I would say that was the only good thing about it... There was no pain and no suffering in his death and it happened in an instant.

Hui Zhen rested her head on my chest and let out a deep sigh, "I heard, Gor Gor... You shouldn’t think so much... You went back before the explosion but you didn’t know... And if you weren’t there, I think more people would have died also... So you shouldn’t keep blaming yourself... Look on the bright side leh."

I patted her head half heartedly, "I know... I just... If I had been more careful... If I had gone back sooner... Maybe I might have been able to stop that..."

"Gor... Like you tell me before, stop living in the past already. You need to keep moving forward and decide what to do about the mistake leh."

I smirked, "You’re starting to sound like an old man."

She puffed up her cheeks, "Wah lau eh, at least say I sound like a big sister leh! What old man?! I still pretty and cute, ok?"

I couldn’t help but chuckle at her.

I guess I really am fortunate that I have people like my sister supporting me.
