Ji Xiaohua believed Ji Xiaosong’s promise.

Her sister had brought her from their village all the way to the Capital City and even secured this courtyard from General Wu. It was more than enough to prove her sister’s capabilities.

‘Maybe their father is watching over them from the underworld, that’s why everything is going so smoothly.’

After the two sisters had been living in the small courtyard for a few days, Wu Chufeng came to visit again.

“What are you here for?”

Ji Xiaosong was a little stunned to see Wu Chufeng arrive with several boxes of pastries.

“I’m here to take you to a good show.”

“A good show? What good show?”

“Miss Ji, you’ll find out when we get there. But I suggest you brace yourself. This show is going to be quite something.”

“Since you put it that way, Young Master Wu, it would be rude of me to refuse.”

Wu Chufeng nodded. He then led Ji Xiaosong into a carriage, and they headed straight for the General Mansion.

Upon arriving at the General Mansion, Wu Chufeng led Ji Xiaosong straight into the main hall.

Inside the main hall, Wu Daniu sat in the seat of honor, his expression dark. He was clearly in a foul mood.

Li Zhixiao stood to one side. Though her face was still pale, she was already able to walk around.

Ji Xiaosong raised an eyebrow. ‘It’s only been a few days, how can Li Zhixiao already be up and walking?’

Xiao Mumu stood beside Li Zhixiao, her eyes brimming with smug satisfaction.

‘It’s a good thing I stole my grandfather’s imperial medicine. Otherwise, there’s no way Li Zhixiao would be walking around so soon.’

Wu Chufeng strode into the main hall, his tone tinged with mockery.

“Father, I heard we have some scum in the family, so I came to see what all the fuss is about.”

When Wu Daniu looked up and saw Ji Xiaosong, his expression shifted slightly. His voice held a note of displeasure.

“Chu Feng, what is the meaning of this? Why is Miss Ji here?”

Wu Daniu’s wife, Wang Cuihua, looked toward Wu Chufeng and Ji Xiaosong with a fake smile, her tone sharp and biting.

“Well, if it isn’t Chu Feng. What’s this? You brought a guest today? And this young lady is…?”

She deliberately drew out her words, her gaze sweeping over Ji Xiaosong with undisguised contempt.

Wu Chufeng chuckled, his tone light and teasing. “Aunt Wang, this is Miss Ji. I brought her to see Father.”

Hearing Wu Chufeng call her “Aunt,” Wang Cuihua stiffened. She desperately wanted to lash out, but that would go against the persona she had carefully constructed.

She always presented herself as gentle and virtuous. Wu Chufeng had been calling her that for years, and it humiliated her every single time.

It was as if he was deliberately reminding her of her unbearable past—how she had clawed her way up from a lowly servant girl and into Wu Daniu’s bed.

Suppressing her anger, Wang Cuihua forced a derisive smile onto her lips.

“Miss Ji? Oh, you mean the country bumpkin from the village? Chu Feng, darling, it’s not my place to criticize, but the Wu Family isn’t a place just anyone can waltz into. Don’t you think it’s a bit inappropriate to bring her here?”

As she spoke, she shot a deliberate, mocking glance at Ji Xiaosong.

“Miss Ji, it’s not my place to say, but the Wu Family is a respectable household. Is it really appropriate for an outsider like you to be here?”

Wu Chufeng scoffed, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

“Aunt Wang, that’s a fascinating thing to say. The Wu Family is indeed a respectable household. But don’t you forget, you were once an outsider yourself. What, now that you’re a wife whose name isn’t even registered with the government, you’ve forgotten your own origins?”

At these words, the color drained from Wang Cuihua’s face, and a flicker of panic crossed her eyes.

She bit her lip, forcing down her rage and mustering a weak smile. “Chu Feng, what do you mean by that? I am your father’s properly wedded wife. How can you speak to me like that?”

The moment those four words, “properly wedded wife,” were spoken, everyone present struggled to hold back their laughter.

Back then, Wu Daniu was just a minor officer who had recently distinguished himself in battle, and Wang Cuihua had eagerly climbed into his bed.

To silence the gossip, Wu Daniu had simply found some random place to perform the wedding ceremony with her.

There had been none of the other usual formalities.

Wu Chufeng shrugged, his tone casual. “Aunt Wang, I didn’t mean anything by it. Just a friendly reminder that the gates of the Wu Family have always been open. If you could get in, then naturally, so can Miss Ji. Besides, Miss Ji is my invited guest. Don’t you think it’s a bit out of line for you to speak to her that way?”

Choking on Wu Chufeng’s words, Wang Cuihua lowered her head, her voice filled with feigned grievance.

“My Lord, look at Chu Feng! How can he speak to me like that? I… I was only thinking of the Wu Family’s reputation.”

As she spoke, tears welled in her eyes, her voice turning frail.

“Miss Ji may be a guest, but today we are handling a Wu Family matter. It really isn’t appropriate for an outsider to be present. My Lord, don’t you agree?”

Hearing Wang Cuihua’s words, Wu Daniu frowned slightly.

He glanced at Ji Xiaosong, then back at Wu Chufeng, his voice laced with hesitation.

“Chu Feng, Cuihua has a point. This is indeed a family matter, and it’s not quite right for Miss Ji to be here. Why don’t you take her home for now and visit another day?”

Hearing this, a cold glint flashed in Wu Chufeng’s eyes, and his tone turned mocking. “Father, you’re being a little biased. Aunt Wang says Miss Ji is an outsider? Well, I’m telling you now, Miss Ji is no outsider.”

He finished speaking and turned to Ji Xiaosong, his voice taking on a solemn tone.

“Father, the reason I brought Miss Ji here today is to tell you that I have decided to take her as my wife. From this day forward, she will be a member of the Wu Family. And since this is a family matter, she naturally has every right to be here.”

Wu Daniu’s expression changed dramatically at these words, his voice filled with shock.

“Chu Feng, what did you say? You’re going to marry Miss Ji?”

Wang Cuihua was stunned as well, a flicker of panic in her eyes.

She hastily took a step forward, her voice urgent.

“My Lord, this… this is unacceptable! Miss Ji is nothing but a country girl. How can she possibly marry into the Wu Family? This… this is against all propriety!”

Wu Chufeng sneered, his voice laced with derision.

“Aunt Wang, you say the most interesting things. Since when were you the one to decide the rules of the Wu Family? Besides, weren’t you just a servant girl once? What, you’ve become a mistress and now you’ve forgotten your own origins?”

At this point, Ji Xiaosong was also completely bewildered.

‘I was just dragged here to watch a show. How did I suddenly end up getting married to Wu Chufeng?’

She tilted her head slightly and, under the cover of her sleeve, gently tugged on Wu Chufeng’s. She then tapped his wrist three times with her fingertips, signaling for an explanation.

Wu Chufeng felt Ji Xiaosong’s subtle gesture. The corner of his mouth curved up, and a hint of a smile flashed in his eyes.

He glanced down at her, his voice soothing. “Song Song, don’t worry. I have a plan.”

Ji Xiaosong frowned slightly, a flicker of doubt in her eyes, but she quickly regained her composure.

She knew Wu Chufeng must have a good reason for this, so she said no more. She simply stood quietly to the side, waiting for him to explain.
