Xiao Rou came back from the bathroom and immediately felt something was off at the dining table. Especially when she sat down, the guy on her other side leaned over with a fawning grin: "Xiao, are you tired?"

"What?"

Xiao Rou was stunned. The guy repeated his question. Xiao Rou didn’t know why he was suddenly asking that, but she still shook her head honestly: "I’m not tired, I..."

Xiao Rou was about to say something more when her phone suddenly rang. She took it out and saw it was a landline number she didn’t recognize, stood up, and walked aside to answer it.

At the same time, someone at the table suddenly shouted, "Holy shit!"

"What’s wrong with you, having a seizure or what?"

Someone was startled by that abrupt shout and immediately mocked him, but the guy just waved the phone in his hand: "Check the news."

On Xiao Rou’s side, she picked up the call, and a very serious, official voice came from the other end: "May I ask if this is she?"

"This is she, and you are...?"

"Hello, this is the Public Security Bureau..."

Listening to what the person on the phone was saying, Xiao Rou felt completely dazed. When she hung up, she walked back to the table in a fog and saw everyone looking at her. She instinctively thought they were just curious about her call.

"Someone from the Public Security Bureau called me, said... said my place was robbed."

Zhou Qi’s brows furrowed, and the others at the table all showed a change in expression.

Just now, that piece of news was about something that had happened last night.

In the complex where Xiao Rou lived, there had been a break?in. While the thief was robbing one unit, the owner came home and caught him. When he saw the owner was a young girl living alone, he not only didn’t panic, he even started having bad thoughts about her.

In the end, the girl fought back and smashed him with a desk lamp, injuring him enough to call the police.

This kind of thing isn’t rare; there are similar reports on the news all the time. But when it happens right next door, just thinking about it is enough to make you break out in a cold sweat.

Zhou Qi stood up, handed his phone to Xiao Rou, and told her to read the news on it. Xiao Rou’s face instantly went pale.

This couldn’t be kept from her, and Zhou Qi hadn’t planned to hide it.

Xiao Rou’s body swayed, and Zhou Qi quickly reached out to steady her, his hand clasping her waist as he murmured in a low, soothing voice, "It’s okay, I’m here."

"Brother Qi, you should go to the Public Security Bureau with Xiao."

The few youngsters at the table stopped joking around and spoke very seriously. Zhou Qi nodded.

The police received the call, arrested the suspect, and found a lot of stolen goods in his bag. They were using information on the items to track down the owners.

When Zhou Qi accompanied Xiao Rou to the Public Security Bureau, a young female detective received them.

"Take a look. Are these yours?"

Before this, Xiao Rou had gone back to her apartment once. The tidy, spotless place she’d cleaned up was now ransacked and a complete mess. Following the officers’ instructions, she first checked all her valuables, confirmed what she’d lost, and only then came to the Bureau.

Now, looking at the items laid out on the table—her tablet, her laptop, plus some jewelry and a small amount of cash.

Xiao Rou glanced over everything and nodded. "These are mine."

The reason it was so easy to quickly confirm whether these were Xiao Rou’s things was that she was the first person the thief had hit. The second victim was the young girl who had fought back and called the police.

The female detective nodded, then glanced at Zhou Qi beside Xiao Rou, and spoke again after a brief hesitation: "There are some other items, um..."
