Chapter 196: Chapter 196 The Lie Is Exposed

Dorian stood motionless near the foot of the massive bed.

The heavy, deceptive words still seemed to hover in the dim room, thick and suffocating. I accidentally left it behind in my hotel suite back in the Etran Empire.

Veyra had merely nodded her head in response. She had told him it was fine in a soft, even voice, and then she had quietly turned her gaze toward the far corner of the bedroom.

Yet deep down, Dorian knew the painful truth.

That modest bottle of custom essential oil had actually worked wonders for him. It had single-handedly cured the terrible, relentless insomnia that had tormented his nights for years on end. Before she handed him that small blend, he had tried every trick available to man. He had taken prescription sleeping pills, tried quiet meditation exercises, and consumed strong glasses of late-night liquor. Absolute zero had worked.

Then Veyra had quietly handed him that simple brown glass bottle. And for the very first time in years, he had fallen into a deep, peaceful sleep that lasted until morning.

Yet just a week ago, in a sudden fit of cold pride and childish annoyance, he had thrown it straight into the garbage. Along with the sweet milk tea she had carefully brought him. Along with her quiet gesture of gratitude. Along with every single bit of warmth she had tried to offer his cold life.

He had regretted that foolish action the exact second his private jet took off for his overseas business trip. Every single night in his empty hotel room, his mind had replayed that terrible mistake. He had wanted to pick up the phone, call her directly, apologize for his awful temper, and ask her to blend another small bottle for him.

Yet he had never made that phone call. He had been far too proud, far too stubborn, and far too arrogant to lower himself.

And now, instead of standing before her like a man and admitting his mistake, he had chosen to cover it up with a cowardly lie.

Veyra picked up on the deception the exact second the words left his lips.

She had simply asked him a straightforward question about the sleep-aid oil, hoping he would give her an honest answer. He had claimed he left it behind in another country, but the subtle shift in his voice was completely wrong. His usual firm eye contact was missing. His straight shoulders had stiffened up in an unnatural way.

He was standing right in front of her and telling a bold-faced lie.

She had spent enough months around Dorian Thorne to read his subtle body language better than anyone else. She had watched him lie effortlessly to arrogant politicians like Naya Whitmore, to fake academics like Professor Sterling, and to rival businessmen across boardroom tables.

Yet this moment felt entirely different from those business games. This was not a tactical move against an enemy. This was a direct, calculated lie aimed straight at her.

She chose not to call him out on it right then and there. She did not raise her voice or demand an immediate explanation. She simply gave him a brief nod.

"Okay," she said softly, her face completely unreadable. "It is fine."

She turned her back on him without another word, walked slowly toward the adjoining bathroom, and pushed the heavy door closed behind her.

Dorian was left standing completely alone in the silent bedroom.

A few minutes later, Dorian walked into the spacious bathroom to wash his hands.

He needed a moment to clear his head, gather his scattered thoughts, and try to make sense of his own foolish behavior.

Why on earth had he blurted out such an obvious lie?

He stepped up to the wide vanity counter and stared directly at his own reflection in the mirror.

The ugly truth was simple: he had lied because he was deeply afraid. He was terrified that if she found out he had heartlessly thrown her thoughtful gift into the trash, she would stop looking at him with those soft, grateful eyes. She would stop trying to express her quiet thanks. She would stop reaching out to him entirely, and she would close off her heart to him for good.

He had foolishly thrown away her genuine kindness, her peace offering, and her gratitude.

And his foolish pride could not bear the thought of her finding out how cruel he had been.

On the other side of the room, Veyra’s mind was racing through the exact same sequence of events.

She reached into the deep pocket of her light robe and pulled out the small brown glass bottle. The essential oil. The exact same bottle she had personally fished out of the dirty waste bin in his private study days ago.

She held it up to the soft light and looked at it closely. The thick glass felt cool against her skin, and the handwritten label was still perfectly intact.

He had thrown her gift away without a second thought. She had known that fact for days because her own eyes had seen it resting among the trash.

Yet just now, when given a clear chance to admit it, he had chosen to construct a deliberate lie. He had claimed he left it behind across the ocean. He had tried to play it off as a harmless, accidental oversight.

By rights, she should have felt a surge of hot anger. She should have marched right up to him, held the bottle up to his face, and exposed his foolish lie on the spot.

Yet she felt no anger at all. She was simply exhausted, deeply hurt, and thoroughly done with trying to bridge the gap between them.

She walked over to the small stainless-steel trash can beside the counter, hovered her hand over the opening, and let go. The heavy glass bottle fell through the air and hit the bottom with a dull, hollow thud.

She would no longer carry it around in her pocket, nor would she try to save it for a man who did not value it. He had thrown it away once, and she had no reason to keep holding onto the broken pieces.

Dorian finished up in the bathroom and stepped out into the open room.

He dried his face with a small hand towel, tossed it onto the rack, and walked into the quiet lounge area of the master suite.

The main bedroom was completely silent now. Veyra was no longer sitting on the edge of the mattress where he had left her.

He glanced around the space, sweeping his eyes across the dark sofa, the low coffee table, and the large glass window overlooking the grounds.

And then his gaze locked onto a familiar object resting on the armrest.

The custom leather gloves.

The very same tactical gloves he had spent hours designing and assembling for her. The ones crafted from rare, tough lizard skin, reinforced with hidden metal knuckles, and fitted with delicate inner lining. The gift he had spent an entire long night crafting by hand at his private workbench.

They were laying completely flat on the dark fabric of the sofa.

He stopped in his tracks and stared down at them.

She had deliberately taken them off her hands and set them down in plain sight. She was returning them to him.

He stepped forward and slowly picked up the leather gloves.

The treated skin felt smooth and cold beneath his fingertips. The hand-stitched seams were perfectly straight, and the dark metal plating over the knuckle guard caught the dim overhead light.

His mind immediately traveled back to that late night in his hidden basement workshop. He remembered sitting under the bright desk lamp, carefully cutting the tough leather, placing every single stitch with precision, and shaping the metal guards so they would fit her small hands perfectly.

He had crafted them for her with his own two hands. He had built them to keep her safe from danger, to protect her in a fight, and to show her that he cared for her safety in the only silent way he knew how.

She had worn them with pride. She had relied on them in fights, and she had even fallen asleep wearing them on one occasion.

Yet here they were, neatly placed on the sofa like an unwanted debt being settled. Returned to the maker.

The quiet message behind her action was painfully clear: Veyra was returning his gift to show that all lingering obligations between them were officially over.

A sudden, sharp tightness gripped Dorian’s chest, making it surprisingly difficult to draw a full breath.

He carefully closed his fingers around the leather gloves, intending to leave the bedroom before his emotions got the better of him.

Yet just as he turned toward the door, a small detail inside the room caught his eye.

The small trash can beside the side table.

Peeking out from beneath a crumpled tissue was the distinct neck of a small brown glass bottle.

Dorian froze in place, his entire body going rigid.

He stepped closer, leaned down, and reached his hand deep into the trash bin. His long fingers closed around the smooth, cool glass, and he slowly lifted it out into the light.

It was the bottle of sleep-aid essential oil.

The exact same custom blend he had thrown away in his study days ago.

He stood completely still, staring blankly down at the small glass container in his palm.

He looked at the bottle, then down at the empty trash bin, and then back up at the bottle again.

The house servants at the Thorne manor were under strict orders to empty every single waste basket in the main suite every morning without fail.

If he had truly thrown this bottle into his study trash can over a week ago, it would have been cleared out, bagged up, and taken to a city landfill miles away days ago.

Yet here it was, resting right on top of the fresh liner in their bedroom trash can, present and accounted for at this exact hour.

The realization hit his mind like a physical blow, exposing the full reality of what had just transpired.

Veyra had found it long ago.

She had spotted the bottle resting inside his study trash can, pulled it out, and kept it in her possession all this time.

And then, just minutes ago, she had stood right in front of him and asked if she could borrow it back to help her sleep.

She had not asked because she genuinely needed the oil tonight. She had asked as a test.

She had offered him a clear, easy path to be honest with her. She had given him a chance to admit his past mistake, confess that he had thrown her gift away in a moment of anger, and apologize for being so unreasonable.

She had wanted to see if he possessed the courage to tell her the absolute truth.

And he had completely failed her test.

He had chosen to stand there, look her straight in the eye, and deliver a smooth big lie.

Dorian slowly turned his body around.

Veyra back was turned completely toward him and he looked at her rigid silhouette, at the cold stillness of her posture, and at the absolute silence that surrounded her. She did not bother to turn around, nor did she make a single sound to acknowledge his presence.

The veil was gone, his empty pride was laid bare, and his foolish lie was fully exposed to the light.
