While Others Evolved, I Understood Reality
Chapter 55: Therapy
Adam eventually left his master’s office with a slight jump in his steps. He could hardly suppress the grin on his face. The moment he stepped out of the administration building, he ran towards the parking lot.
As the lot came into view, Adam pressed the key fob and immediately got feedback. He turned on his heel and headed for the car. And when his eyes fell on the car, he fell in love right then and there.
"Hehe, this is so cool!"
Adam ran to the car and circled around it several times in the span of a few seconds, the grin on his face unbidden. It was everything a boy like him could dream of in a car.
The sleek black sports car sat low on the ground like a predator ready to pounce. Its low profile, sharp lines, and gleaming finish exuded wealth, speed, and understated power. Even at a standstill, it looked ready to tear down the road at a moment’s notice.
Adam pressed his face against the side and whistled smoothly, "Now this is what I’m talking about. This baby is perfect!"
Anyone passing by would have seen his actions as strange, but Adam did not care. A baby like this did not come by every day. Eager to take her on a joyride, Adam hopped in and once again marvelled at the interior.
It came with black and red bucket seats, leather furnishing and carbon fibre touches. Adam took a deep breath of the sleek interior, the scent overwhelmingly euphoric. He was this close to having an...ahem. The car was perfect in every way that mattered to a boy like him.
"Ahh..."
With no time to waste, Adam started the car and pulled out of the parking lot. Moments after it reached the main road, the tyres squealed underneath the car like the roar of a monstrous beast.
"Now this’s a car!"
Back in the administration building, Asher looked on with a knowing smile. The car, at the very least, had lifted Adam’s mood ever since his kidnapping. He knew his disciple had not completely recovered from that incident.
And after a bit of chat with Adam’s father, he came to know about Adam’s taste in sports cars. It was the perfect therapy for his disciple. A man needed very little in stimulating their ’happy’ hormones.
Adam spent more than half an hour getting used to his new ride. Through it all, his grin remained glued to his face. His drifting skills were by no means weak either. His Unique Skill did not just apply to understanding the universe around him... it encompassed everything.
Picking up top-notch driving skills from watching a few videos was all it took to perfect his driving skills.
Fortunately for him and everyone who saw him drive, he held back when he got to populated areas within the academy. Before long, he pulled up at the grand library of the academy.
Curious heads turned the moment he parked his car, the whispers following soon after he stepped out. Adam had become a sort of celebrity after everything that had transpired in the last couple of days.
He confidently strode towards the grand entrance of the massive library with a slight smile on his face. He couldn’t deny it; he was feeling good.
Coming to the library had been a part of his plans since he stepped out of his room. He needed to get various books on the areas he desired to quickly improve on. Despite the advancement mankind had made in the realm of technology since awakening, hardcover books were still relevant.
It came with no distractions, no pop-up links, no power interruptions, and no eye strain. There was this tangible connection it came with that a screen could not match.
Stepping inside the library came with its very own unique atmosphere. Past the reception desk were towering shelves stretching toward the high ceiling and packed with countless books — both from the old and new world.
Warm lights cast a gentle glow over the polished tables, while the faint scent of paper and ink lingered in the air. Despite the occasional rustle of turning pages, an atmosphere of calm and focus permeated the space, making it the perfect place for study and reflection.
Most of the people Adam saw around were seniors he had no business with. And he was only here for one purpose. He approached the reception desk and called out politely.
"Hello..."
Behind the reception desk was a blue-haired young man who seemed to have no worries in life. The man had his eyes closed as he sat back in his chair, completely at ease with his surroundings.
"Hmm...?"
The blue-haired man slowly opened his eyes to notice Adam. Without so much as sitting up, he casually asked, "What is it?"
"Right. I was wondering if I could borrow a few books?" Adam asked, not bothered by the man’s reception.
"Sure. That section is for borrowing." The man pointed to his left as he explained. "Pick what you need, then come back here and input your student info into that terminal."
Adam looked in the direction the man pointed and then at the terminal mounted to the side of the reception desk. The explanation was simple enough. He liked that the process was not overly complicated.
That might probably be why the man looked so relaxed at his post.
"Thank you."
Adam nodded and headed for the section he was shown. Walking through the towering shelves, he kept an eye out for the projected descriptions of what each shelf contained.
There were books about the evolution of the world and all living creatures, books on all the various branches of science, information technology and mathematics. Adam wasted no time picking several books from every section he needed.
Some time later, he returned to the reception desk with a mountain of books in his arms, his face and the upper anterior of his body hidden. Those who saw him wondered what he was up to, as no sane student would carry that many books at once.
They could only shake their heads at his behaviour. How could anyone justify kidnapping a person like him? The clerk gave Adam a casual glance before closing his eyes again. He could not be bothered to help; he had done his part already.
Adam managed to put the books down with a bit of trouble, realising he had been too eager. ’Maybe I should have picked them a few at a time.’
Shaking his head, he retrieved his student ID and approached the terminal. He followed the instructions and input every detail required for borrowing the books he picked. A final notice informed him to return the books after two weeks.
’Two weeks is too long.’ Adam smiled to himself. ’I will only need a week at most.’
Once he took care of everything, he carried the books to his car, this time splitting the books into smaller, manageable stacks. With these books and a few more rounds, he would cut down his study time to almost zero.
