Who Says I'm Not a Proper Adventurer?
Chapter 192: Overstepper’s Pointing
Chapter 192: Chapter 192: Overstepper’s Pointing
When Lance opened his eyes again, the world around him had completely transformed.
He found himself standing in a golden wheat field that stretched to the horizon.
A gentle breeze blew past, and the heavy heads of wheat undulated like ocean waves.
The place exuded a tranquil, pastoral air.
But when Lance looked up, he discovered there was no sun in the sky.
Overhead was a vast, boundless sea of stars, with countless twinkling celestial bodies slowly revolving along some mysterious trajectory.
The light illuminating the wheat field actually emanated from a golden star hanging incredibly close in the sky.
Lance squinted, spotting a giant tree stump in the distant center of the undulating wheat.
The tree had been snapped in half by some unknown, terrifying power, and he could faintly make out someone on the stump.
He looked down at himself.
His upper body, which had been bare in the attic, was now thoughtfully draped with a long, grayish-blue cloak by someone unknown.
Lance snarked internally.
’So, it seems we’re moving on to a wholesome, family-friendly game. No shirtless participants allowed, I guess.’
Lance reached out to part the waist-high waves of wheat and strode toward the tree stump.
As he drew closer, he got a clear look at the person.
It was a little boy who looked to be only eight or nine years old.
He wore a very ill-fitting, oversized divine robe, its collar hanging loosely off his shoulders.
The little boy was sitting comfortably on the edge of the stump, his back against a soft pile of wheat straw, head tilted up as he earnestly studied the cards in his hand.
A translucent butterfly made entirely of starlight rested quietly on the boy’s shoulder, slowly flapping its glowing Wings.
Hearing the rustling footsteps from the wheat field, the little boy turned his head, his clear gaze falling upon Lance.
"Big Brother, you’re here?"
The little boy put down his cards, his face lit up with a brilliant smile, just like an Ordinary child who had been waiting a long time for a playmate.
"And you are?"
Lance stopped, asking politely in a soft voice.
"My name is Chaos."
"I’m the one who specifically invited you here to play a game with me, Big Brother."
The little boy’s expression was one of pure innocence. He swung his legs happily and said, "If you can beat me in the game, I’ll give you a really great gift."
Hearing this name, numerous Legends about gods manifesting in the mortal world immediately surfaced in Lance’s mind.
According to Legend, a god’s true form cannot be looked upon directly; any mortal who witnessed it would have their sanity shatter.
Therefore, when a god chose to appear before humans, they generally took the form of an avatar that represented their personality.
’This childlike appearance must represent His aspects of fun and innocence.’
"The fact that you see me like this, Big Brother, means that deep down, you also love to play games."
Chaos smiled even more brightly, his eyes curving into two crescent moons.
It was the smile of someone who had finally found a kindred spirit.
His words struck a subtle chord within Lance.
A love for games.
That phrase instantly brought back many memories from his past life.
Those times spent sitting before a screen, pulling all-nighters to beat games, were truly some of the best moments of his past life.
"You’re right."
Lance looked at the child god before him, a relaxed smile forming on his lips. "We’re two of a kind, then."
"Two of a kind?"
Chaos tilted his head, a little confused by the unfamiliar term.
However, He didn’t dwell on the question, instead patting the edge of the stump beside him with a small, excited hand.
"Come on and sit down, Big Brother! We’re about to start the game."
"The game we’re playing today is this."
Chaos opened his palm, revealing the cards in his hand to Lance.
It was a deck consisting of ten Secret Silver Plates.
The top-left corner of each card was marked with a clear number from 1 to 10, while the center was printed with intricate and ornate mystical patterns.
"This game is called Overstepper’s Pointing."
Chaos patiently laid out each card on the stump for Lance to see, explaining the rules in a crisp, clear voice.
"It’s a very simple point-comparison game. After both sides reveal their cards, the one with the higher number wins."
"However, a 1 can beat a 10."
"As the dealer, I get a tiny little privilege."
Chaos held up two fingers, pinching them close together to show just how tiny it was.
"At the start of each round, I’ll draw two cards from the shuffled deck."
"After I’ve looked at them, I’ll choose one to play face-down, and the other will be returned to the deck."
"And you, Big Brother, as the challenger, can only blind-draw one card from the deck each round."
"After we compare points, the two cards that were played will be discarded and cannot be used again."
"The game will go for three rounds, best-of-three."
After hearing these rules,
the corner of Lance’s eye twitched slightly.
’Yes, this is a completely unfair game.’
’From the perspective of mathematical probability and information asymmetry, the dealer having the choice of two cards means Chaos can perfectly avoid useless, low-point cards. He can even deduce what I might draw based on the card he keeps.’
Watching the sly, fox-like smile on Chaos’s face as He stated this tyrannical clause, Lance immediately thought of the core authority the god wielded.
Rebellion, Reversal, Absurdity, Trickery.
He even had reason to suspect that, besides the obvious advantage of choosing between two cards, Chaos surely had other, more nefarious cheating methods hidden within the game.
’But if it were just a one-sided slaughter where a god crushes a mortal, the game would be far too boring.’
Chaos clearly didn’t like being bored either.
So.
Chaos suddenly extended a delicate white finger and tapped it gently in Lance’s direction through the air.
Immediately, Lance felt his newly condensed Source Material stir, prompted by an external force.
His heart skipped a beat.
He then clearly felt that, beneath his grayish-blue cloak, extra cards had suddenly appeared in his hand.
There was no need to look down.
The information on those cards was already imprinted clearly in his mind.
"Big Brother, you can now use the extra card Effects generated by your Source Material to try and defeat me."
Chaos’s smile faded a little, and for a moment, his delicate face held a trace of divine majesty.
"This is the only chance a mortal has to defeat a god head-on."
"By wagering the sum of your entire past, turning your Source Material into a blade, and launching a counterattack against a god."
