Chapter 485: Chapter 319: An Idea for a War Fortune
Xihai City was a small city built in the southern part of the Sunset Islands, situated on Luoxia Island, the northernmost of the Southern Four Islands. It was famous for producing a rich variety of Water Type Spiritual Materials.
At that moment, Han Ning, Sage, Hom, and Cang Tong were disguised as merchants from an ordinary caravan. Seated on the back of a giant Stone-splitting Eagle, they saw a vast, gloomy, dark-blue coastline faintly appear below.
The mission was highly dangerous, so after some discussion, they had ultimately decided to bring Second Elder Cang Tong along.
Along the coastline, monstrous waves periodically rose, surging toward the seawall built around the periphery of Luoxia Island. They crashed against everything in their path. An immense volume of seawater crested the waves, relentlessly pouring over the wall, smashing onto the island, and flooding into the central Xihai City, turning the city’s northern district into a watery mire.
Wherever the seawater spread, Spiritual Lights of different colors flashed continuously. Even from high in the air, one could hear the roars of Sea Beasts and the whistle of Soul Techniques cutting through the atmosphere.
The sky was overcast, and a torrential downpour raged.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Countless beams of Spiritual Energy shot out from hastily erected fortifications, forming a dense web of firepower. They unleashed a frantic barrage upon the Sea Beasts emerging from the water.
A shark with skin as black as ink, over ten meters long and as large as a semi-truck, suddenly burst from the water’s surface, hurtling straight for a five-story building.
THWACK-THWACK-THWACK!
In an instant, dozens of cyan-colored birds with greenish feathers, each shrouded in Wind Type Spiritual Energy, turned their heads in unison. Their beaks parted slightly, and a countless number of Wind Blades hammered against the shark’s back, causing a brilliant spray of Spiritual Light Points.
The shark, however, seemed completely unharmed, continuing its assault on the building in an attempt to devour the creatures inside.
Just then, a petite Wind Elf flickered in and out of sight among the clouds.
SWOOSH!
The piercing shriek of an energy beam tore through the sky.
BOOOOM—
With an earth-shattering bang, a deep cyan light erupted. Dark blood splattered as the giant shark’s body was sent flying backward, slamming into the water’s surface.
Over a dozen massive Stone-splitting Eagles carrying Beast Masters disguised as traveling merchants broke through the wind and rain. They descended from the sky, landing on the roof of a seven-story stone building in the center of Xihai City.
Even in a state of war, the opposing forces couldn’t completely halt sporadic commercial activity. Furthermore, the Red Manta Clan was hardly a united front, which was one of the reasons Han Ning and his group had been able to successfully infiltrate in disguise.
Members of the Red Manta Clan needed to profit from the war, while the Wind Spirit Race needed outside supplies. This was a tacit, unspoken agreement between them.
The Stone-splitting Eagle caravan consisted of 25 members in total. Only two-thirds of them were actual merchants engaged in frontline trade; the rest were all scattered Witch Spirit People recruited from various regions by a Wind Spirit Race Intelligence Officer.
Han Ning’s group of four jumped off the Stone-splitting Eagle. Listening to the ceaseless explosions in the distance, they followed their leader, Hassuning, into the stone building.
Hassuning first arranged for the actual merchants to rest in a safe area. He then led the remaining third—the Witch Spirit People—into a spartan hall large enough to hold over a hundred people.
When they arrived, dozens of people had already gathered in the hall.
Everyone sat down in silence.
Before long, a middle-aged Witch Spirit man in a black robe walked in through the doorway.
He nodded to the roughly 50 Beast Masters standing before him and got straight to the point.
"Thank you, my kinsmen, for traveling from far and wide to support us. I am Tyr, the Marquis’s adjutant. The situation is urgent, so I won’t waste time with pleasantries. Others will assign you to your respective posts shortly. First, let me brief you on the current situation."
This Witch Spirit man, Tyr, had a pale complexion, his cheeks marked with cyan patterns. His expression was grim, and his robes were dotted with specks of red blood. It was obvious he had just returned from the front lines and had rushed to this meeting without a moment’s rest.
He took out a long metal rod and pointed to a map of the Sunset Islands projected from Spiritual Particles behind him. He moved the rod across the map as he spoke:
"Right now, our Xihai City is on the absolute front line. We are facing the Sea Beast Alliance Army, formed by the Red Manta Clan and the Wangchao Family, and the pressure is immense."
"All Beast Masters of Tier Three and higher, please proceed to the first defensive line, established in the northeast of Xihai City. A High Tier Beast Master there will assign you your tasks."
The moment Tyr finished speaking, seven or eight people from the group below stood up and followed one of his subordinate Beast Masters toward the front lines.
Then, Tyr slid the metal rod to a point on the spiritual map, indicating the northern region slightly behind the northeast. He said:
"The density of the beast tide is lower here, but scattered Sea Beasts occasionally break through the lines. I must ask all Tier Two Beastmasters to go there and reinforce the defenses."
Just then, Han Ning felt a light tap on his shoulder, and a low voice spoke:
"I just received word from the adjutant. The Marquis is on the front lines, commanding the battle. Come with me."
The speaker was the Intelligence Officer, Hassuning, who was also serving as the guide for Han Ning’s group on this mission.
Besides him, a young Witch Spirit woman also joined them, forming a six-person squad.
The group of six blended in with the larger crowd of Witch Spirit Beast Masters. Along with a dozen or so other Tier Two Beastmasters, they exited the hall and walked down to the first floor.
At the entrance of the stone building, everyone summoned their respective Soul Beasts in unison.
The air thrummed. In an instant, over a dozen Soul Beasts of various shapes and sizes materialized in the plaza outside the entrance.
Han Ning sat on the back of Egg Pancake, who was disguised as an ordinary Sub-dragon, staying close to Sage and Hom.
