Chapter 627: Chapter 390: Demon Sword Comet Eclipse

The man flung his arm, pulling more red banknotes from his coat and throwing them in the woman’s face. "You wretched peasant! You just think it’s not enough money, don’t you? Is this enough?"

The careless shove sent the woman stumbling. Already sick and weak, she slipped and fell right into the mud.

"Mom!"

A sharp cry came from behind the door. The four- or five-year-old girl ran out into the wind and rain, helped her mother up, then stood in front of her protectively.

Her little face was flushed with anger. Clenching her tiny fists, she charged and started pummeling the man in white’s legs. "Bad man! Bad man! Stop bullying my mom!"

"Xiaonan, don’t!"

The woman struggled up from the mud. Ignoring the filth covering her clothes, she went to grab her daughter.

The swordsman’s face was cold. He let the little girl’s harmless punches land on his leg as his right hand slowly reached for the hilt of the sword on his back.

After a dozen or so punches, the man showed no reaction, but her own little hands had turned bright red.

"Are you alright?"

The alluring woman glanced at the swordsman’s hand reaching for his hilt and cried out in alarm. She hurried past her companion to help the mother.

"Miss, it’s not that I don’t want to offer you shelter," the mother said, seeing the alluring woman was reasonable. Her bloodshot eyes stared out from a pale face, and her lips trembled as she spoke.

"I understand, ma’am. We’ll find somewhere else. Here, take this money. Think of it as compensation for your trouble."

"Oh, I couldn’t possibly."

"Just take it."

Not taking no for an answer, the alluring woman stuffed a wad of cash into the mother’s arms. Then, she crouched down and smiled at the little girl.

"Don’t be angry anymore, little one. We’re leaving now."

"Let’s go, you two."

"Hmph."

The swordsman snorted, releasing his grip on his sword. He didn’t argue with his companion.

As the three of them left the woman’s home, they turned and their gazes met Han Ning and Li Changxi, who were standing nearby, watching the commotion.

"Outsiders?!"

The swordsman sized up their clothes, his eyes narrowing. A dangerous glint appeared in them.

Meanwhile, the alluring, silver-haired woman’s expression shifted slightly upon seeing Han Ning and Li Changxi. She turned her head to say something to the man in the trench coat beside her.

The swordsman paid his two companions no mind. He walked through the wind and rain to stand before Han Ning and Li Changxi, staring at them grimly. Coldly, he said:

"State your purpose for coming here."

"None of your fucking business."

Though Li Changxi was meek and submissive before Han Ning, he reverted to his usual crazed demeanor when speaking to others.

"Motherfucker! You’re courting death!"

The swordsman flew into a rage. His right hand shot to his back, ready to draw his sword.

But just as his palm touched the hilt, just as he was about to draw the blade...

A powerful constricting sensation washed over his entire body.

It was as if someone had taken ropes and bound his arms, legs, and even his head, immobilizing him completely.

Just then, a gaunt hand came to rest on his right hand.

A light tap.

SLAP!

The swordsman’s hand was slapped aside.

The gaunt hand smoothly closed around the hilt and drew the blade.

SHIIING!

A cold glint flashed into existence, seeming to slice through the very raindrops falling from the sky.

"A fine sword."

Han Ning’s figure had somehow appeared at the swordsman’s side. He held the longsword, his left hand gently stroking the flat of the blade as he spoke with admiration.

It was a sword of pale purple, its surface shimmering with a faint, flowing light.

"You!"

The swordsman’s pupils contracted. Frozen in the act of drawing his sword, his eyes darted about in utter disbelief.

Han Ning toyed with the sword. "What we’re doing here has nothing to do with you, does it?"

The swordsman’s two companions were also utterly stunned by the power Han Ning had just displayed.

They hurried over, an obsequious smile plastered on their faces. "So sorry to have disturbed you, sir. We’ll be on our way now."

Han Ning grunted in acknowledgment. He sheathed the sword and said with a smile:

"Consider this a small lesson. Remember to be more polite next time you ask questions."

The moment he finished speaking, the swordsman realized he could move freely again.

The arrogant, domineering look on his face vanished completely. He gave Han Ning a long, hard look before leading his two companions away, disappearing into the curtain of rain.

"Mr. Han, are you just going to let them go?" Li Changxi asked hesitantly, watching the trio’s retreating backs.

"Of course not. This is a village, it’s not a convenient place. Once we’re in the wilderness, we can consider whether or not to... deal with them."

The air beside Han Ning vibrated.

Before Li Changxi could even react, a massive black bird, like a jet fighter, shot up from the ground. It broke through the wind and rain, soaring into the heavens.

"I... I see. I was worrying for nothing," Li Changxi stammered.

...

In the somewhat dim kitchen, the table was laid with a plate of pickled vegetables, a small dish of shredded red ginger, a large tureen of chicken soup, braised pig’s feet, fried pork ribs, pan-fried river fish, and several bowls of fluffy white rice.

"Conditions are poor here in the mountains, so this is all I could prepare," the woman said. She took out the cash Li Changxi had given her earlier and placed it on the table. "This is the money that was left over. I’m returning it to you."

"Ah, you’re being too kind, ma’am. It’s all for you." Li Changxi wouldn’t hear of it and stuffed the money right back into her pocket.

The area around Ludao was mountainous, with little land suitable for cultivating rice paddies. A typical meal for an ordinary family consisted of rice paired with homegrown vegetables, and perhaps a small cut of pork.

"That longsword from before," Li Changxi said suddenly, "if I’m not mistaken, it must be the legendary Demon Sword, Wisdom-Eroding."

"The Demon Sword?"

"Yes. It came from an ancient ruin. The sword contains immense Evil Power that affects its wielder’s emotions. But its might is astonishing—it can amplify all sorts of an Extraordinary Being’s abilities."
