Will of Vienna
Chapter 49: The Friction of Flesh and Steel
The initial, explosive rush of adrenaline that had flooded Michael during the cabin ambush began to recede, leaving behind a cold, stark reality. As the adrenalin wore off, a sharp, blinding surge of pain radiated from his left upper arm. The bloody wound from the Dire Hound’s jaws was deep, tearing through his flesh and embedding itselve directly into the dense muscle tissue. The pain was sharp and hot, pulsing loudly, somehow in agonizing synchronization with his heartbeat.
“Arrrrrggghhhh…” a low, guttural hiss escaped through his clenched teeth, but was suppressed by a sheer act of discipline the very next moment.
Michael’s eyes narrowed as he stared at the dark asphalt ahead. *No. This is nothing. If I allow myself to be brought down by a mere flesh wound, I might as well commit suicide right here. How many times have I been injured today already? I have lost count. In a few hours, this pain will be nothing more than a faint footnote in my memory. Most likely, I would not even remember it. Life does not care about discomfort, and neither can I. I can‘t stop. I MUST GO ON!*
He maintained his feet on the accelerator, forcing the silently humming sedan to hurtle deeper into the fractured streets of the urban grid. But the environment was not allowing him to rest. Behind him, the chaotic cacophony of scratching claws and guttural roars grew louder. A growing pack of low-tier monsters was trailing his vehicle, their numbers swelling with every block he crossed. Yet, it wasn’t the pursuers behind that concerned his mind; it was the variables he couldn’t see—the predators waiting to ambush him from the blind spots of the lateral corridors and between the parking cars.
To counteract the severe visual limitations of the moving vehicle, Michael tightly focused his consciousness onto his surroundings, projecting his mind outward into a perimeter through moving his eyes from the end left corner to the right and back. Utilizing his exceptionally high willpower stat, he forced his cognitive processing to its absolute limits, so that he could maintain a nearly three-hundred-and-sixty-degree awareness of the approaching intersections only with one or two seconds of delay. It was an immense mental burden, drawing heavily upon his endurance and mind, stretching his cognitive boundaries to a razor-thin margin.
Suddenly, a violent distortion in his lateral view triggered his heightened senses. A massive, agile silhouette was coiled behind a parking car, according to its movements it was about to jump and launch itself directly at the driver-side window.
*Increase speed or slamming on the brakes—what should I do?* Michael’s mind calculated the variables within a fraction of a millisecond.
He chose to stop.
Michael slammed his foot onto the brake pedal. The sedan’s tires screeched in protest, the kinetic energy transferring violently as the chassis shuddered and ground to a sudden deceleration. An instant later, the massive variant launched itself, its claws clawing empty air. Carried by its momentum, the heavy beast crashed brutally onto the open asphalt directly in front of the car, rolling awkwardly across the concrete as it struggled to came to halt.
Before it could stabilize its stance or recover its footing, Michael’s reaction was instantaneous. He shifted his foot back to the accelerator and stomped down with maximum force. The sedan surged forward once more, its engine roaring with simulated power. The stunned beast struggled to its feet, squandering two to three seconds simply trying to orient its sensory organs to the rapid change in dynamics. It lunged forward in a desperate attempt to intercept the vehicle, but the window of opportunity had closed. Michael had already breached its immediate perimeter, leaving the roaring beast behind to join the growing vanguard of pursuers.
Yet, the maneuver had exacted a severe logistical penalty. The sudden stop had stripped him of his precious speed, and the trailing horde had rapidly closed the distance. Worse, the loud sounds of the break and the sudden acceleration had acted as a localized beacon. More monsters were emerging from the streets, closing in from all lateral sectors simultaneously. The structural envelope was collapsing around him.

For a brief, volatile moment, a cold seed of desperation threatened to take root in Michael’s mind. *They are coming from every single side… Was I too hasty? Did I fundamentally overestimate my current capabilites?*
Almost instantly, the sheer pressure of his high willpower triggered a counter-response, violently crushing the rising tide of negativity. *What is wrong with me? Why am I already thinking of my demise? I am still alive, so there must be a way! There is no room for panic or desperation. Those emotions are just a waste of energy. What are my most promising escape routes? The density of the horde is too high. If I cannot outrun the containment, I must cut through it. Where is the weakest link of these monsters?*
His eyes scanned the rapidly tightening ring of monsters, mapping out their tiers, sizes, and relative positions. He selected the lateral left sector—a minor gap where the density was marginally lower. Making his decision with iron resolve, Michael unlatched the driver-side door with his right hand, slammed his foot down into a violent full brake, and simultaneously launched his body outward into the open air.
The sudden stop of the car created a catastrophic pile-up. The fast-moving monsters trailing tightly behind the vehicle were completely incapable of reacting in time and avoiding the stopping car. They slammed into the rear bumper and chassis of the sedan with force, a chaotic crunch of metal, bone, and flesh echoing through the narrow street.
Michael hit the hard asphalt, rolling to absorb the kinetic impact before springing back up onto his feet. His back was hurting and he had minor scratch wounds because of the fall but that was not important right now. He required a brief moment to reorient his visual field and stabilize his stance. His eyes immediately locked onto the cluster of monsters currently entangled with the ruined vehicle. These were not the sluggish, low-tier scavengers from earlier; the Level 2 variants had most likely lacked the speed to maintain the chase. Only the elite, high-speed Level 3 variants had managed to keep pace. There were four of them, struggling to untangle themselves from the smoking wreckage of the car.
Michael didn’t hesitate. He stepped forward, his Level 5 shortsword materializing into his right grip, its dark sharp edge practically thirsting for its release. He utilized their momentary immobilization to its absolute maximum.
With a fluid, sweeping motion, he executed a lateral slash that cleaved cleanly through the throat of the first Level 3 variant, before shifting his body weight to drive a heavy vertical chop down through the torso of the second. The hide of the beasts offered almost no resistance against his Level 5 Blade. Without pausing to witness their collapse, Michael reversed his grip, executing two lightning-fast, highly precise thrusts straight through the orbital sockets of the remaining two beasts, piercing their brain stems with absolute mathematical accuracy.

The warm, revitalizing rush of the Level Up washed over his weary muscles, instantly knitting the torn fibers in his left arm and dispelling the lingering cognitive fatigue. It was a perfect tactical reset. However, there was no time to analyze his newly acquired status points. Even as the blue notifications flickered across his vision, his heightened perception registered a sudden shift in the air pressure above him.
A massive, predatory shape descended from a nearby structural ledge, launching itself directly toward his blind spot with claws extended. Michael had anticipated the trajectory. Moving with enhanced agility, he executed a swift, disciplined step backward, allowing the creature to crash harmlessly into the asphalt where he had stood a millisecond before.
But the fight was not over. Before he could even bring his shortsword up to counter-attack, a second, equally massive entity tore through the smoke of the burning vehicle, charging directly at his flank. The physical constraints left him with absolutely no space to execute another evasion.
Realizing that there was no escape, Michael braced his core, tightened his grip on the hilt of his shortsword, and prepared himself mentally for the impending collision.
