Chapter 1484: Chapter 1484: I’ll Be on Guard
If he hadn’t accidentally run into him by the pond in the garden, squatting there with a short dagger, writing the character "endure" over and over on the ground, he would almost have been fooled.
He still remembered that when Maxwell Saxon wrote that character again and again, the expression on his face was so cold and sinister it would make even an adult feel afraid. Those eyes were not what a normal kid of a bit over ten should have.
It was because of this that on the very first day Maxwell Saxon entered the Saxon Family, he knew Maxwell was putting on an act.
Sure enough, in the days that followed, Maxwell Saxon kept up a façade of being timid yet very sensible. Because he seemed timid, none of the people who interacted with him would feel too much hostility toward him.
With the weak, most people either sympathize or bully them. The Saxon Family members were fairly decent; even though they didn’t hold much respect for him, this Young Master, back then, they never secretly treated him and his mother harshly.
On top of that, Maxwell Saxon always behaved extremely polite, sensible, and capable, so within less than a month of arriving at the Saxon Family, he’d earned unanimous praise from everyone in the household.
The family already had a second Young Master who was arrogant, domineering, and moody, and usually made them suffer enough. Now that a good-tempered eldest Young Master had come along, who wouldn’t like him?
Even Roy Saxon was very pleased, and publicly praised May Denton for raising her son well.
A person who, at just over ten, was already adept at disguising himself, and did it so successfully—how could he possibly underestimate him?
All these years, if there was anyone he truly regarded as a rival and guarded against, it was only Maxwell Saxon.
--
When the car pulled up to the agreed spot and they got out, Matthew Saxon suddenly said, "Scarlett, relax. Whatever Maxwell Saxon’s motive is, I won’t let him have the chance to snatch you away from me."
After he spoke, he took her hand, held it in his palm and gently squeezed, as if to soothe her.
Scarlett Yates was taken aback for a moment. She blinked, fell silent for a few seconds, then softly said, "I’m not worried about that."
"Liar."
Matthew Saxon directly exposed her lie: "No wonder I kept feeling like you had something on your mind. So it was because of this. Ever since you got in the car, you’ve been distracted. And you still dare say you’re not worried?"
Was she really that obvious?
Scarlett Yates’s lips moved, wanting to refute him, but what came out wasn’t that: "This isn’t the only thing I’m worried about."
She hadn’t said anything to Matthew Saxon, yet he’d guessed the thing she was most afraid of.
In front of him, she really couldn’t hide any secrets.
"Since we’ve already come back from A Country, I absolutely won’t let us fall into that kind of predicament again. With your reminder, I’ll stay on my guard. Don’t worry—none of the things you’re afraid of will happen."
He lightly patted the back of her hand, then rubbed her head: "Alright, get out of the car. That kid must be getting very impatient by now."
"You really aren’t going in with me?"
They had discussed it beforehand: she would go talk things through properly with Knox Simmons and make everything clear, while he waited for her in the car.
Matthew Saxon had given her an hour, and Scarlett Yates had agreed she would sort everything out within that hour.
An hour was enough for her to explain things to Knox Simmons.
Hayes Simmons had preached plenty of big truths to her today, and there were some things Scarlett Yates felt really did make sense.
