Chapter 1532: Chapter 1532: Don’t Marry Him

Scarlett Yates hesitated for a few seconds, then nodded.

"Did he use me to threaten you?"

She hesitated again, bit her lip, then nodded.

She couldn’t hide anything from him.

Rather than lying to him from the very beginning, she might as well honestly tell him everything.

Anyway, even if she lied, he wouldn’t believe her.

"What did he say?" Matthew Saxon’s eyes suddenly filled with a chill, his gaze sinking, growing much colder as he gave a mirthless laugh. "Did he force you to marry him? Did he also say that as long as you agreed to marry him, he’d help detoxify me?"

Sure enough, he could guess everything.

She could only nod honestly. "Mm."

Matthew Saxon’s gaze grew even colder, the icy light in his eyes biting. The arm wrapped around her waist suddenly tightened, and he ground out between clenched teeth, "He’s dreaming!"

"Yeah, he’s dreaming. I told him that too. It’s nothing but daydreaming." Once you marry a man, you follow the man. She’d married Matthew Saxon; now, of course, everything took Matthew Saxon’s opinion as the priority. Whatever he said, she echoed.

Matthew Saxon suddenly reached out and cupped her face. His expression was overcast and oppressive, like storm clouds pressing down, icy light flickering in his eyes as he gritted out, "Scarlett, don’t marry him."

Scarlett sniffled in aggrieved silence. "I don’t want to marry him either."

"Then treat everything he says as bullshit. Ignore him."

She wanted very much to treat Maxwell Saxon’s words as nothing but bullshit, but could she?

Scarlett felt sour, wronged, and heartsick all at once. Her heart felt like it was being torn into pieces and thrown into a pot of boiling oil, frying there, putting her through the worst kind of torment.

Her voice gradually dropped lower and lower. The moisture in her eyes quickly condensed into hot tears. She blinked, and they rolled out of her eyes one by one, clinging to the corners like little dewdrops. "But what about you, Matthew Saxon? What about you?"

"You know that the poison in your body can only be cured by him. Do you have any idea what you’ll become if it isn’t cleared within a month?"

"So, you’ve already decided to agree to his conditions, leave me, and marry him instead?" His deep voice carried an obvious trace of anger.

Scarlett fell silent.

Matthew Saxon grew even angrier. "You really plan on doing that?"

She was silent for a while longer, then wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes herself and forced a bitter smile at him. "So what am I supposed to do? You want me to watch you suffer for the rest of your life? Matthew Saxon, if it were you standing in my shoes, what would you do? Would you marry a woman you don’t like for my sake?"

She lifted her small, pale face. She had just been crying; her eyes were still red and a little swollen. "Maxwell Saxon won’t stop until he gets what he wants. You want me to stand by and watch you end up paralyzed? Sorry, I can’t do that."

"If marrying him can make you and Uncle Saxon both get better, I’m willing to do it."

"I forbid you to have thoughts like that." Matthew Saxon pressed his lips into a thin line, his eyes dark and shadowed as he lifted his sleeve to wipe away the tears at the corners of her eyes. He was still angry, so his movements were a bit rough; after only a few swipes, the skin around her eyes had turned red.

She endured the pain without making a sound.

"Scarlett Yates, I’m telling you right now, put away all those ridiculous ideas in your head. I won’t allow you to sacrifice yourself for me."

Matthew Saxon really was angry now.

But beneath the anger was even more self-blame and heartache.

He had always said he would cherish and protect her for a lifetime.
