"Back then, there were two men in Vancouver I really didn’t want to see. One was you, and the other was Brother Wubai."

"So I rarely came back. If I could avoid seeing you, I would. Only when it was New Year or some holiday and I really had nowhere to hide would I reluctantly come back to Vancouver. He paused for a long time before he went on, "How much did you hate me back then?"

"Enough to tear your heart to pieces," Maimai said.

"The deeper the love, the deeper the hate."

Hearing his narcissistic line, Maimai snorted. "Don’t be so full of yourself."

"Did Wubai ever come looking for you later? That bastard, trying to steal my girl behind my back. I’ve got to teach him a lesson someday—he actually dared to covet my woman."

Although Sheng Sheng said that, he didn’t really mean to teach Wubai a lesson. He’d known since they were kids that Wubai liked Maimai. Wubai had always held back, leaving the chance to him. The tangled, intense feelings in all of this weren’t necessarily something he could fully understand, but he was grateful that Wubai hadn’t gone head‑to‑head with him.

Because being the one closest at hand, he actually had the upper hand over himself.
