"Back then, there were two men in Vancouver I really didn’t want to see. One was you, and the other was Brother Wubai."

"So I rarely came back. If I could avoid seeing you, I would. Only when it was New Year or some holiday and I really had nowhere to hide would I reluctantly come back to Vancouver. And every single time you’d sniff me out, drag me off to some deserted corner and bully me. At the time I hated you to death, just thought you were pure scum, trash, a total beast."

Sheng Sheng gave a weak laugh. "If I wasn’t a bit of a beast, I’d have no way to get close to you. You were like a hedgehog—every time you saw me, all your spines shot up. What was I supposed to do?"

He paused for a long time before he went on, "How much did you hate me back then?"

"Enough to tear your heart to pieces," Maimai said.

"The deeper the love, the deeper the hate."

Hearing his narcissistic line, Maimai snorted. "Don’t be so full of yourself."

"Did Wubai ever come looking for you later? That bastard, trying to steal my girl behind my back. I’ve got to teach him a lesson someday—he actually dared to covet my woman."

Although Sheng Sheng said that, he didn’t really mean to teach Wubai a lesson. He’d known since they were kids that Wubai liked Maimai. Wubai had always held back, leaving the chance to him. The tangled, intense feelings in all of this weren’t necessarily something he could fully understand, but he was grateful that Wubai hadn’t gone head‑to‑head with him.

Because being the one closest at hand, he actually had the upper hand over himself.

"He came to find me a few times. In those five years, he looked me up four or five times. At first he just wouldn’t give up, and every time I’d curse him out. Later he seemed to finally give up and told me not to hide from him, that he was willing to quietly just be my Brother Wubai."

"He said you were his best brother, and I was the most important, unforgettable person buried in his heart. The two of us both carried huge weight in his heart, and he didn’t want to destroy either kind of relationship." As Maimai said this, she was also speaking up on Wubai’s behalf. There were some things she’d never thought about hiding from Sheng Sheng, but she also didn’t like the idea of a rift between Sheng Sheng and Brother Wubai. "He said if the person I married in the future was you, he’d accept it and let go, because he believed that aside from himself, you were the only person he’d feel at ease entrusting me to. He was convinced you’d treat me well."

"At the time I really couldn’t see what was so good about what he said. All I could see was you bullying me every time you saw me, and I just inwardly scoffed at his words."

"He also said that if the one I chose in the future was someone else, then he’d definitely fight for me, because apart from himself and you, he didn’t trust any other man, and he wasn’t willing to just hand over the little darling in your hearts to some other guy."

"To be honest, I’m really scared that whatever breakup drama he’s having with Little Ai now is because he still can’t let go of me. I don’t even dare ask. First, I’m afraid I’m overthinking it. Second, I’m afraid I’ll be right, and that would be even more awkward."

"I know how Little Ai feels. She’s had a thing for Wubai since junior high, and she carried that all the way through high school and university. She finally managed to step into Wubai’s world. When it comes to love, she’s like some kind of Saint Seiya warrior—charging ahead without looking back, regardless of anything. Sometimes I think she’s so silly, but deep down I really admire her courage. If it were me, I absolutely couldn’t do it."

She was the kind of very proud girl who, if a man didn’t like her, would never show her feelings no matter how crazy she was about him inside. And the kind of man she wanted had to dote on her, love her, and not make her swallow even the tiniest bit of hurt.
