Chapter 33: Chapter 33: Lu Feng Has Returned

"My husband is Lu Feng," Fu Xiaoxiao said softly.

"... Hiss!!!" Before the squad leader could say anything, every cook who heard Lu Feng’s name drew in a sharp breath.

Seeing their reaction, Fu Xiaoxiao was momentarily stunned. Was Lu Feng’s name that intimidating?

"Uh, so you’re the wife of Camp Commander Lu. Yes, yes, I’ll get it for you right away. Sister-in-law, do you want a rooster or a hen?" The squad leader bent down at the waist.

He carefully sized up Fu Xiaoxiao, wondering how such a delicate sister-in-law ended up marrying that living hellion...

Could her petite frame withstand the abuse... ahem, the coldness of Camp Commander Lu?

"A hen!" Fu Xiaoxiao thought for a moment. Hen soup is more beneficial for a patient’s recovery, so a hen would be better.

"Alright, alright, Sister-in-law, please wait a moment." The squad leader hurried to the cold storage to fetch a hen.

"How much is it? I’ll pay you," Fu Xiaoxiao asked with a smile, holding the hen.

"Sister-in-law, there’s no need. It’s only right for Camp Commander Lu to have it." The squad leader shook his head, refusing to take Fu Xiaoxiao’s money.

"If you won’t take the money, I can’t take it," Fu Xiaoxiao said, seeing his refusal, and had to return the hen to him.

"Sister-in-law, in that case, just give me two dollars." Seeing Fu Xiaoxiao’s insistence, the squad leader scratched his head and reluctantly accepted it.

"Thank you!" Fu Xiaoxiao smiled at the squad leader, holding the chicken and leading Lu Chen home.

Back home, Fu Xiaoxiao took the chicken into the kitchen, washed it thoroughly, and realized she didn’t have a small pot. So she quickly went next door to ask Sister-in-law Chen.

"Sister-in-law, do you have a clay pot?"

"Yes, yes, I do. I’ll get it for you!" Chen Xiu quickly brought out the pot from her home.

"Thank you." Fu Xiaoxiao took the clay pot and hurried back.

She placed the whole hen in the pot, filled it with water, added green onions and ginger, and set it to simmer slowly on a small stove.

With the rice cooking in the pot, Fu Xiaoxiao called Lu Chen over to watch the fire while she headed to the backyard.

The vegetables in the backyard had a small patch cleared, but there were still plenty left. If they weren’t consumed soon, they would rot in the ground.

Fu Xiaoxiao looked seriously at the little vegetable garden for the first time. Lu Feng had divided it into several sections, with cabbages and leafy greens in the middle.

She glanced around and saw a frame with gourds hanging on the east side, tomatoes and eggplants on the south side, pumpkins and winter melons in the west corner, and radishes and potatoes in the north.

It’s quite impressive. This little vegetable garden, managed by Lu Feng, had everything.

After digging up two radishes and potatoes and picking some gourds and eggplants, Fu Xiaoxiao had already planned out what dishes to make tonight in her mind.

Gourd soup, cold eggplant salad, stir-fried radish, and mashed potatoes for the two kids.

Perfect.

In the kitchen, as the little stove had been simmering for a while, the aroma of chicken soup began to fill the air. Lu Chen didn’t know how many times he’d swallowed his saliva, as the scent of chicken broth became richer and more tantalizing.

When Fu Xiaoxiao returned, she saw Lu Chen constantly swallowing his saliva.

That greedy yet determined look to restrain himself was truly adorable.

"After we serve some for Mr. Lu, the rest will be ours to enjoy," Fu Xiaoxiao said, smiling at Lu Chen.

"Will drinking the chicken soup make Mr. Lu better?" Lu Chen asked.

"Yes! Chicken soup is very beneficial for a patient’s recovery. Drinking it will help him get better faster!" Fu Xiaoxiao explained.

"I’m not greedy; it’s all for Mr. Lu. He’s injured and needs the nourishment." Lu Chen shook his head. No matter how tempted he was, he wouldn’t take Mr. Lu’s soup.

"I wish for Mr. Lu to get well. Before, when Dad was injured and came home, an uncle sent chicken over, but before Mom could make soup, Uncle came and took the chicken to Grandma’s house..." Lu Chen said gloomily, not understanding at the time why his uncle took it home to Grandma.

Mom only cried.

Now he understood it was meant to help Dad recover, but Uncle took it away, so Dad’s health was poor.

Fu Xiaoxiao was stunned, not expecting this...

Silently, she ruffled Lu Chen’s hair.

"Don’t worry, Mr. Lu will get better."

Lu Chen sniffed and nodded."

Once the dishes were ready, Lu Lin returned just in time.

Smelling the chicken soup in the house, Lu Lin’s expression changed drastically.

"Who’s hurt? Is it Mr. Lu?"

Seeing the excited Lu Lin, it was clear that the matter of chicken soup left a deep impression on the two brothers.

Cooking chicken soup equated to someone being injured.

"Brother, Mr. Lu is injured, and Brother Wang Lu said Mr. Lu can only return to the hospital at the camp tonight." Upon seeing Lu Lin, Lu Chen immediately rushed over to embrace him.

"Will you two be okay on your own tonight? I might need to go to the hospital to care for Mr. Lu..." Fu Xiaoxiao looked at Lu Lin, speaking seriously.

The boss was injured, so, as an employee, it’s only right to offer care. But then there were the two kids...

"We’ll be fine!" Lu Lin and Lu Chen said in unison.

"Come eat first! Mr. Lu won’t arrive for a while." Fu Xiaoxiao motioned for them to come to the table and served the prepared dishes.

"This is gourd soup, this is cold eggplant salad, it’s a bit sour. This is stir-fried radish, and the last is mashed potatoes. Try them and see if you like them," Fu Xiaoxiao introduced the dishes.

"Everything you make is delicious!" Lu Chen praised, even before taking a bite.

"Delicious." Lu Lin glanced at Fu Xiaoxiao, taking a bite of each dish before speaking.

"Then let’s dig in!" Fu Xiaoxiao chuckled.

Three dishes and a soup; Fu Xiaoxiao initially thought there might be leftovers, given they were just one adult and two kids. But the two little ones finished all the food.

"Don’t overeat; it’s not good for your stomach," Fu Xiaoxiao was taken aback by their appetite.

"I’m not stuffed, just full." Lu Chen patted his little belly and grinned.

Lu Lin nodded; Fu Xiaoxiao’s cooking was delicious, and they were indeed quite hungry.

Fu Xiaoxiao was helpless but relieved to see they were fine.

After Lu Lin finished washing the dishes, Fu Xiaoxiao bathed the two kids, but Lu Feng still hadn’t returned.

Looking at the sleepy little Lu Chen who was nodding off, Fu Xiaoxiao whispered to the wide-eyed Lu Lin who was staring at the door. "I’ll wait here. You take Xiao Chen to the room to sleep; he’s already extremely tired."

After all, he was only a five-year-old child, and staying up this late was beyond his limit.

"...Alright." Seeing that Lu Chen was almost asleep on the ground, Lu Lin sighed, carried Lu Chen on his back, and returned to the room. "If Mr. Lu comes back, let me know."

"Okay," Fu Xiaoxiao nodded.

After Lu Lin returned to the room, Fu Xiaoxiao sat in the courtyard, gazing at the starry night sky, watching as time ticked by until almost ten o’clock when Wang Lu’s figure finally appeared at her doorstep.

"Sister-in-law..." Wang Lu called out softly.

"I’m here." Fu Xiaoxiao stood up and opened the door.

"Camp Commander Lu is back..." Wang Lu hesitated, unsure how to convey the news to Fu Xiaoxiao.

"Wait for me; I’ll quickly pack my things and go to the hospital with you." Fu Xiaoxiao, not noticing Wang Lu’s difficulty due to the darkness, hurried to the kitchen to take the stewed chicken soup. She gently called outside Lu Lin’s room and, confirming he heard, quickly went out and headed to the hospital with Wang Lu.

In the darkness, unable to see Wang Lu’s conflicted expression, Fu Xiaoxiao followed him to the ward, only to hear a sweet, cloying voice from inside.

"Camp Commander Lu~"
