He quickly forced a smile and went along with what Jean Jarvis had said. "Yes, yes, you’re right. Clara, you and Chloe are sisters. You two need to support and help each other, so you have to give Chloe a hand."
As long as they didn’t bring up the fact that he wasn’t her biological father, Clara Grant certainly wasn’t going to mention it herself.
Chloe Grant, however, had no such tact. She stiffened her neck, her expression full of disdain, and retorted with a cold snort, "Who’s her sister? Dad, don’t just go around claiming connections. Watch out you don’t get dragged down with her when things go south."
"Chloe, shut your mouth! If you keep running your mouth, believe me, I’ll freeze all of your bank cards!" Cedric Grant warned her in a low, stern voice, then glanced around warily.
’The other guests didn’t seem to be paying them any mind, but who knew how many gossips were secretly straining to overhear? If outsiders heard about something so humiliating, how could he, Cedric Grant, ever show his face in public again?’
’This daughter of his was just too impulsive, and sometimes, utterly thoughtless. If something bad happened to Clara, what good would that do the Grant family? What good would it do *her*?’
Though resentful at being yelled at by her father, Chloe Grant just pouted and said nothing more.
’Hmph. The show is about to start anyway. We’ll just see how smug Clara can be then!’
Although Jean Jarvis also thought her daughter was too impulsive, seeing her get reprimanded still ignited a flash of anger in her heart.
’It was because of Clara Grant again! That was the only reason Cedric would scold Chloe so fiercely. Every time Cedric lost his temper with Chloe, it was because of Clara and her mother. Why? Why was it that even after being kicked out of the Grant family, that mother and daughter could still make their lives miserable?’
The more she thought about it, the angrier Jean Jarvis became. Yet, on the surface, she feigned a casual air, glancing around before asking,
"Clara, dear, where’s your mother? She’s the mother of the bride, after all. She must have been invited to an event like this. Has she not arrived yet? Or... is it because of certain things that she feels she’s lost face and is too embarrassed to come?
"Really, there’s no need to feel that way. Even if your parents-in-law know all about it, what can they do? What’s done is done, and you’re already married to Seth, right?"
Although Jean Jarvis didn’t specify what "it" was, and an outsider wouldn’t have understood, the people in their small group knew exactly what she was talking about.
Clara Grant froze. ’She knew Jean Jarvis was likely referring to the fact that her mother was a foundling, but besides Seth, no one in the Quinn family was supposed to know about that. How could her parents-in-law possibly know?’
A chill shot through her heart. "What are you talking about?"
Chloe Grant, who had been sulking just a moment before, now raised an eyebrow at Clara, a triumphant smile spreading across her face.
Cedric Grant, however, furrowed his brow and shot Jean Jarvis a harsh glare. "What nonsense are you spouting?"
After Cedric finished speaking, Jean Jarvis acted as if she had just realized she’d misspoken, quickly trying to cover her tracks. "Oh, it’s nothing, I didn’t mean anything by it... Well, Clara, you and Seth must be busy. We’ll get out of your hair."
With that, she grabbed Cedric Grant and made to leave.
’Leaving her hanging like that was the best way to make Clara feel anxious, unsettled, and flustered...’
’In short, she just wanted to make Clara miserable.’
Chloe Grant clearly wasn’t satisfied and didn’t want to let Clara off so easily, but she was forcefully dragged away by Cedric Grant.
Only when they were some distance away from Clara and Seth did Cedric Grant fling Jean Jarvis’s hand off him. "What was that all about? I told you never to bring that up again. Why did you mention it?"
