Chapter 684: Chapter 681: A Sudden Disturbance (10)

After Rowan Linden spoke, Ewan Stratton heard no reply from Sarah Shelby. He turned his head and looked up at her, only to see that her expression was slightly unnatural. The look in her eyes as she gazed at Rowan Linden was also strange.

Ewan Stratton’s gaze darkened. He turned back to look at Rowan Linden, lost in thought.

"Come on, let’s go somewhere else. We shouldn’t stand here and get in the way of President Quinn and Mrs. Quinn while they’re greeting guests." Simon Linden smiled gently and said to Rowan Linden, "Rowan, help your sister-in-law with the wheelchair."

Rowan Linden nodded and stepped forward. "Sister-in-law, let me."

Hearing him call her "sister-in-law" felt a bit awkward to Sarah Shelby. ’He’s probably older than me, isn’t he?’ she thought. ’But it sounded so natural when he said it.’

She glanced at Rowan Linden and was about to hand over the wheelchair, but before she could even lift her hand, Ewan Stratton spoke up. "That’s not necessary. Your sister-in-law and I were just looking for a quiet place to sit for a while."

The hand Sarah Shelby had started to lift immediately tightened its grip on the handles of the wheelchair.

After speaking, Ewan Stratton looked at Simon Linden and Vera Stratton and continued, "Uncle, Aunt, you both know me. I prefer to be somewhere quiet."

"Of course, of course. You two go on ahead." Vera Stratton nodded quickly, then added to Sarah Shelby, "Sarah, take good care of Ewan."

Sarah Shelby nodded, exchanged a look with Clara Grant, then pushed Ewan Stratton toward a more secluded and quiet spot.

Vera Stratton watched them move away and couldn’t help but sigh. "Sarah is a good girl, really. She takes such devoted care of Ewan. It would be so wonderful if Ewan could one day stand up and not need a wheelchair anymore."

Simon Linden gently put an arm around her shoulder to comfort her.

Rowan Linden smiled and said, "Mom, look at you, getting all sentimental again. My cousin and his wife seem to have a good relationship. The power of love is a great thing. Who knows, maybe he’ll be out of that wheelchair for good before we know it."

"Yes, yes, you’re right. Your cousin will definitely be able to stand up again." Her son’s words rekindled Vera Stratton’s confidence.

"Come on, let’s get a drink to calm your nerves," Simon Linden said, putting his arm around his wife as they walked away.

Rowan Linden shrugged and looked over at Seth Quinn and Clara Grant. Noticing Clara also looked a bit downcast, he smiled. "What’s wrong, Clara? Did you catch my mom’s sentimentality? Are you also worried about whether my cousin’s legs will recover?"

Clara Grant shot him a look. "I’m not worried about his legs. I’m mourning for Sarah, having to marry a man like that."

"Clara!" Seth Quinn whispered, unable to stop himself. No matter how you looked at it, Rowan Linden was Ewan Stratton’s own cousin. For her to talk about Ewan like that would surely put Rowan in an awkward position.

But Clara Grant just gave him a look before turning back to Rowan Linden. As if she couldn’t hold it in any longer, she said, "Dr. Linden, I have to ask, what on earth made you think Sarah and that cousin of yours have a good relationship?"

Her question left Rowan Linden a bit stunned. The truth was, he really didn’t know whether his cousin and his wife got along well or not. He’d just said it off the cuff to comfort his mother.

Clara Grant looked in the direction Sarah Shelby and Ewan Stratton had disappeared, sighed, and murmured, "Oh, poor Sarah. The thing is, I was actually planning on setting her up with you..."

"What did you say?" Rowan Linden had clearly heard her and sounded startled. ’The "you" she was talking about... was that me?’

He and Seth Quinn were the only men standing there. It was obviously him.

Clara Grant hadn’t expected him to hear her mumbling to herself. Since he had, she didn’t bother trying to cover it up and admitted with a sigh of resignation, "It’s exactly what you heard."

For a long moment, Rowan Linden’s gaze landed on some distant point, his expression thoughtful.
