Chapter 707: Chapter 704: The Truth Is Revealed (3)
Hearing the crowd’s murmurs, especially those mocking and ridiculing him, Cedric Grant was utterly mortified and enraged. He raised his hand, ready to strike Jean Jarvis.
But Jean Jarvis simply tilted her face up to meet his hand. "You want to hit me? Go ahead!"
"You!"
Cedric Grant seethed, but ultimately lowered his hand in frustration.
Skylar Hayes was clearly in shock. For over a year, she had believed she had been assaulted, and that Clara was the child born from that violation.
When she first learned of it, she’d nearly had a mental breakdown. This past year had left her emotionally and mentally drained, living in a constant daze from the torment.
But now, all of a sudden, she learned it was all a lie. She had never been assaulted by some monster, and her daughter wasn’t the "bastard" of unknown origins that people called her!
The truth was out, and her name was cleared, but Skylar Hayes felt no trace of happiness or joy. Instead, her heart was a maelstrom of conflicting emotions.
She couldn’t believe that someone had orchestrated all of this to frame her. And that this person was none other than Jean Jarvis, the woman she had always considered her best friend, a sister.
She could forgive her for betraying their sisterly bond. She could even choose not to hate her for interfering in her marriage to Cedric Grant.
But how could she, on top of betraying their friendship and meddling in her marriage, also be so vicious and cruel as to frame her, to destroy her reputation and ruin her honor?
She didn’t even spare her own daughter, Clara!
To think that even when Jean had replaced her as Mrs. Grant, Skylar had never once suspected she would use such despicable means against her!
Skylar Hayes stared at Jean Jarvis and started walking toward her, but she stumbled. Clara Grant quickly reached out to steady her. "Mom..."
Skylar Hayes shook her head, refusing her daughter’s support. She walked, step by step, until she stood right in front of Jean Jarvis. Staring intently into her eyes, she spoke with great difficulty, word by painful word,
"Jean Jarvis, why? Why would you do this to me? Back in school, I considered you my best friend. When we met again years later, I still thought of you as my best friend. I even treated you like my own sister.
"I knew you were struggling financially, so I found ways to help you with living expenses, with clothes, and I even gave you money. Was I not good to you? You said it yourself—that you would always see me as your dearest sister.
"Is this how you treat your dearest sister? Is this how you repay kindness with cruelty?"
Jean Jarvis just looked at her and let out a dry laugh. Her expression then turned sinister and resolute. "I didn’t want to, actually. If you have to blame someone, blame yourself for running into me again. For reappearing in my life in a state so completely opposite to my own!
"I was struggling, destitute, while you had transformed into a wealthy madam. How could I not be jealous?
"Skylar Hayes, don’t talk to me about repaying kindness with cruelty. If it weren’t for our twenty-odd years of friendship, I would have pushed you out of your spot as Mrs. Grant two decades ago, instead of enduring it all that time and only making my move last year."
"Jean Jarvis, even now, you refuse to admit you’re wrong? I was truly blind back then to have so wholeheartedly considered you my best friend!"
Skylar Hayes closed her eyes for a moment, staggering back a couple of steps. There is nothing more heartbreaking in this world than being betrayed and hurt by the person you held dearest.
