“What?” Zhuang Xiyue cried out, stumbling back two steps with a “thud thud,” almost collapsing to the floor. Yan Nanmo reacted fast and grabbed her into his arms. Zhuang Xiyue buried herself against his chest, sobbing: “How could this happen?”

Yan Nanmo gently patted her back, comforting her softly: “Yun Ya is blessed. She’ll definitely pull through this.”

Though he was suffering inside too, under these circumstances he had to hold it together.

Yan Ke pressed, “How exactly is my sister-in-law? Spell it out for me.”

The young man was devastatingly handsome, refined and noble; who would’ve thought he could speak with such sharp urgency. The nurse was startled, and under his intimidating gaze, stammered through an explanation.

It was the first time Yan Ke learned that Ji Yunya had such a huge hidden health issue, yet she had still insisted on having the baby. Yan Ke couldn’t understand—what kind of love is that?

He suddenly looked at Yan Song, hating him for the first time, hating men like them: watching the woman they love suffer so much, yet only able to stand there, helpless, doing nothing.

That helplessness made him want to rush over and punch him.

Don’t you love her so much? Then why let her endure all this pain? Faced with life and death, your love looks so small and ridiculous.

“If anything happens to Sister Yun Ya, I will never forgive you.” Yan Ke said in a low voice, the boy’s firm features already showing the first traces of maturity.

He called her Sister Yun Ya, not sister-in-law. That alone showed where he stood.

Yan Song was silent, just standing there quietly, yet it felt like his soul was drifting somewhere in the ninth heaven. His whole body exuded a chilling sense of isolation and desolation.

Zhuang Xiyue beat her chest and stomped her feet. “I should never have listened to her back then, shouldn’t have let her keep the baby. It’s all my fault, all my fault…”

Yan Nanmo sighed. “Don’t do that, it’s not your fault…”

Very soon a nurse came running out, her hands covered in fresh blood. The sight was shockingly stark. Yan Song’s pupils tightened abruptly, his gaze locked like a wolf’s on those blood-red hands.

“We don’t have enough blood prepared. Dr. Huide told me to ask you if you arranged anything beforehand.”

Zhuang Xiyue was stunned. Dr. Huide had warned them earlier, but Yun Ya’s blood type was far too rare. Up to now they still hadn’t found a suitable blood source.

Just then a rush of hurried footsteps sounded. In the pin-drop quiet hallway, that footfall was especially jarring.

They all turned in unison and saw a tall, broad-shouldered middle-aged man striding over, leading a young woman.

The woman had a softly rounded figure, almond eyes and rosy cheeks, with a calm, classical air. At the moment her expression was tinged with anxiety as she hurried over.

Yan Song recognized the woman; she was Yun Ya’s friend.

Chang Hong came up to them and nodded. “There’s no time to explain. This lady’s blood type matches Miss’s. Let her go in and give blood first.”

Lin Sili didn’t even have time to greet them. She rushed to the nurse, saying urgently, “Take me in, quick.”

The nurse instinctively glanced at Yan Song. Yan Song nodded, and only then did the nurse lead Lin Sili away at a quick pace.

Ever since Lin Sili learned Yun Ya was pregnant, she’d guessed this day might come. So recently she’d been tonifying herself like crazy every day, bringing her body into its best possible condition, just in case.

So when Chang Hong came knocking, she agreed without a second word.

She didn’t want to think too deeply. She only knew that when she had been cornered with nine chances of death and one of survival, it was Yun Ya who appeared and saved her. A drop of kindness should be repaid with a spring; how much more so a life-saving grace.

Even if it cost her life, she would have no complaints.

Even so, things were still not looking good.

Yan Song couldn’t keep waiting. Just as he was about to break down the door, a hand lightly caught his shoulder.

Yan Song reacted on instinct with an over-the-shoulder throw. A light figure slid over his head and landed softly on the other side.

The woman’s raven hair was gathered in a high knot, her hairband rippling without wind, giving her a naturally dashing, free-flowing air.

“No need to panic, Young Master Yan.” The woman’s cold voice carried a low, magnetic timbre.

Yan Song stared at her, his gaze icy.

Mingyue lifted a brow. “I’ve come on my master’s orders. I absolutely won’t let Miss have an accident.”

As her words landed, the nurse stared, dumbfounded, and in the blink of an eye Mingyue vanished from the doorway of the operating room.

——

Three days later.

The midday sun was bright and searing, baking the earth in blistering heat.

Cicadas and birds called endlessly, adding a lazy, peaceful touch to this ordinary afternoon.

In a hazy fog, Yun Ya seemed to hear people talking.

“These big eyes look like Yun Ya… this nose looks like Ah Song. Hey, she smiled, she’s smiling at me…”

The woman was clearly no longer young, but right now she was excited like a little girl.

“Which one’s the older twin? Which one’s the younger? They look exactly the same to me.” The boy’s confused voice was laced with irrepressible joy.

“I can tell them apart. The older one’s skinnier, the younger one’s chubbier. The older one’s eyes are rounder, the younger one’s nose is straighter. See? Easy to tell.”

Yan Ke scratched his head. No matter how he looked, the two tiny figures lying side by side seemed carved from the same mold.

“Mom, we should give the two babies names.”

Zhuang Xiyue said cheerfully, “We’ll save their proper names for Yun Ya to pick. As for nicknames…” Zhuang Xiyue thought for a bit and said, “The older one’s got round little eyes, we’ll call her Yuanyuan. The younger one… she’s perfect everywhere, so we’ll call her Manman—Yuanyuan and Manman, so full and complete, isn’t that nice.”

As she spoke, she teased the two little babies. “My Yuanyuan and Manman, Grandma’s sweet granddaughters…”

Yan Ke liked them more the longer he looked. For three days he’d been immersed in the joy of being an uncle, even laughing in his dreams. These two little nieces combined all the best features of their parents; no matter how he looked at them, they were adorable.

Thinking of something, Yan Ke turned and glanced at the man sitting by the bed. It had been three days and he hadn’t moved from that spot. He hadn’t even held his two daughters once. When Mom carried them over in front of him for a look, he actually turned his head away in blunt disgust.

Who treats his own biological daughters like that?

Granted, it was because of these two little dumplings that his sister-in-law had come so close to death, but any resentment he’d had was blown far away the moment he saw those milky, chubby little cuties.

Yun Ya’s lips twitched faintly as she slowly opened her eyes.
