Chapter 248: Chapter 248: First Encounter with Faye Sterling (2)
’By stepping in to help, I’d saved her from being mocked and despised. It was clear she found Elias Jennings’s family far more detestable than an academic rival! So, Zoe Jennings’s change in attitude toward me was understandable.’
’At the end of the day, she was just a high school girl—vain, competitive, and jealous of those more outstanding than her. It was just teenage rebellion! A phase everyone goes through. If I weren’t in the picture, Zoe Jennings would truly be a student the entire Tollan High could be proud of! In that sense, I’m the one standing in her way!’
’In truth, Zoe Jennings is quite exceptional. At least, in terms of academic performance, she’s outstanding!’
Seraphina Sterling took the college entrance exam, just as she’d planned.
The results of one exam, taken over two days, decided a student’s fate. It was cruel, but it was the unalterable reality.
The evening the college entrance exam ended, the Jennings family gathered in high spirits to celebrate the family’s two test-takers. Even Zeke Jennings’s family was there. Although Sylvia Jennings was very reluctant to come, she’d been dragged along under the threat of a beating from her father, Zeke.
She might have shown up, but her attitude at the dinner table was another story. "For all we know, they completely bombed it, and you’re already throwing this huge party? Isn’t it a little premature?"
"I’m quite confident in my results. At the very least, getting into a first-tier university won’t be a problem. Sylvia, you’d better step it up. You don’t want to be the only Jennings kid who fails to get into college. You’d never live that down!" Now that the exam was over, Zoe was relaxed and had the time and energy to bicker with Sylvia.
"What do you mean ’all the Jennings kids get into college’? You might be a good student with great grades, but who knows how you did on the actual exam? Plenty of people are brilliant day-to-day but choke when it comes to the big tests!" Sylvia glanced at Zoe, her voice laced with sarcasm.
"And even if you did well and got into a university, that doesn’t mean everyone else can do the same! Someone who hasn’t been to school once in months, hasn’t attended a single class, and even skipped a grade! If someone like that can get into college, then a college education must be worthless! Just anyone can get in!"
After taking a jab at Zoe, she didn’t forget to drag Seraphina into it as well. In reality, Sylvia was just deflecting. Of all the girls in the Jennings Family, her grades were undeniably the worst.
"If I’m confident I’ll get in, then Seraphina has an even better chance! It’s true she didn’t go to school, but you can’t argue with raw intelligence! And you’re right, a college education is worthless! I just wonder if next year, you’ll even be able to get into one of these ’worthless’ universities?" Zoe was ready to go head-to-head with Sylvia today. Now that her miserable high school life was finally over, she was buzzing with excitement.
For the first time, Sylvia discovered that the girl she’d always dismissed as a bookworm actually had such a sharp tongue!
"You really don’t need to be so insecure. Like you said, a college education isn’t worth much these days. Getting in is one path, not getting in is another."
Seraphina was stating a fact. While grades were important, not everyone could excel at academics. It wasn’t a path that suited everyone. Many people could find great success in other fields.
Seraphina’s advice was sincere, but that’s not how Sylvia heard it at all. She felt Seraphina’s words were simply a veiled insult!
"Who’s insecure?! I’m not insecure! It’s just college! If even someone like you, who didn’t attend a single day of senior year, can get in, then I can definitely get in too!" Sylvia shrieked, her voice so loud that even the people in the kitchen could hear.
