AFTER BEING EXILED: MY SISTER AND I BUILD HIDDEN CIVILIZATIONS
Chapter 26 - 25: The House Beneath the House
Chapter 26: Chapter 25: The House Beneath the House
The unlocking sound did not stop.
It rolled upward through the foundations of the mansion in long metallic waves.
First came one lock.
Then another.
Then dozens.
The floor beneath Arin’s boots trembled as if some buried machine far larger than the mansion had finally decided to move.
Lyra stepped closer to him.
EVE’s eyes burned white.
Lucan had already drawn his sword.
Serena reached instinctively toward the dagger hidden beneath her cloak.
Arin did none of those things.
He looked at the map.
Hundreds of black markers pulsed beneath House Elysium.
Most were small.
Some were scattered beneath roads, farms, workshops, and empty residential districts.
But the largest rested directly under the mansion.
«ROOT FACILITY AWAKENING.
DESIGNATION:
FOUNDER TERMINATION CHAMBER.»
Arin read it twice.
Then he raised his wrist.
"System."
«LISTENING, FOUNDER.»
"Define termination."
A pause.
Too long.
«REQUEST RESTRICTED.»
"Expected."
Lucan looked toward him.
"You aren’t surprised?"
"I’m very surprised."
"You don’t look it."
Arin closed the map.
"Looking surprised doesn’t improve anything."
Another impact shook the mansion.
A glass shattered somewhere in the hall.
Lyra flinched.
Arin looked at EVE.
"How many exits from this building?"
"Registered?"
"All."
EVE’s expression tightened.
"Unknown."
"Then registered."
"Seven."
"Seal six."
Lucan frowned.
"Why keep one open?"
"Because if something comes from below, I don’t want every path leading toward Lyra."
Arin turned toward Serena.
"Take her and the infant to the eastern courtyard."
Serena immediately objected.
"No."
Arin looked at her.
She stopped.
Not because he raised his voice.
Because he didn’t.
"You’re injured."
"I can still fight."
"Then fight from somewhere useful."
Her eyes narrowed.
Arin continued.
"EVE."
"Founder."
"Send four security drones with them."
Lyra crossed her arms.
"I’m not hiding."
Arin looked down at her.
"Correct."
She blinked.
That wasn’t the answer she expected.
"You’re relocating."
"That’s hiding with a better word."
"It’s surviving with a better plan."
Lyra opened her mouth.
Arin crouched.
"Listen."
Her expression softened slightly.
"If something opens beneath this mansion, I need to know you are not standing above it."
She looked toward the floor.
Then back at him.
"Are you going down there?"
"No."
Lucan turned sharply.
Arin stood.
"Not until we know what is coming up."
That surprised everyone.
Good.
He was done walking blindly into ancient traps simply because they opened.
The mansion shook again.
This time, the sound came from below the dining room.
A deep grinding followed.
EVE’s head snapped toward the far wall.
"Founder."
"I see it."
A section of the marble floor had changed color.
Black lines spread across the stone.
Not cracks.
Seams.
A circle appeared beneath the central table.
The table began sinking.
Lyra’s eyes widened.
"Big Brother..."
"Move."
Everyone backed away.
The table vanished into the floor.
A circular platform replaced it.
No stairs.
No visible shaft.
Just a black disk covered in silver symbols.
Lucan stepped closer.
"That wasn’t there before."
"Obviously."
"Do you ever answer normally?"
"Not when the answer is obvious."
Lucan almost smiled.
Then the platform activated.
«ROOT ACCESS LIFT AVAILABLE.
AUTHORIZED USERS:
ORIGINAL ADMINISTRATOR.
ACTIVE FOUNDER.
TERMINATION OFFICER.»
Serena’s face hardened.
"Termination officer?"
Arin looked toward EVE.
She shook her head.
"No corresponding record."
"Good. Add it to the growing pile of things we don’t understand."
A new message appeared.
«ROOT FACILITY ACTIVATION:
12%.»
Then:
«TERMINATION OFFICER STATUS:
DORMANT.»
Arin’s attention sharpened.
Dormant.
Not absent.
Lucan noticed too.
"Something down there is waking."
"Yes."
"Do we destroy the lift?"
Arin thought for three seconds.
"No."
Lucan frowned.
"You want to keep access open?"
"I want it where I can see it."
The older brother nodded slowly.
Better answer than he expected.
Arin looked toward EVE.
"Disconnect the mansion from lower power."
"Attempting."
Her eyes flickered.
"No response."
"Expected."
"Founder, I can overload the local conduits."
Lucan looked impressed.
"That sounds useful."
Arin shook his head.
"Too early."
EVE paused.
"You wish to preserve the facility?"
"I wish to know what it does before we destroy it."
Serena watched him.
"That is dangerous."
"Yes."
"You still intend to wait?"
"Yes."
Arin looked toward the platform.
"Seraphine activated this because I classified her hostile."
Lucan nodded.
"Meaning it was probably designed to kill Founders who resist the Administrator."
"Probably."
"So why not destroy it?"
"Because she expects that."
Lucan went quiet.
Arin continued.
"If I panic and break every hidden system she activates, I destroy my own city for her."
That landed.
Even EVE looked at him differently.
Arin’s voice hardened.
"We respond to threats."
He pointed downward.
"We do not let her choose what we are afraid of."
Lyra smiled slightly.
Arin noticed.
He did not comment.
Another system alert appeared.
«ROOT FACILITY ACTIVATION:
18%.»
The mansion lights dimmed.
Not from power failure.
Power transfer.
Something beneath them was consuming energy.
EVE looked toward the city map.
"Founder, power draw has reached three percent of total city output."
"Source?"
"Termination Chamber."
"Can we starve it?"
"No."
"Why?"
"It possesses an independent core."
Lucan muttered.
"Of course it does."
Arin turned toward Serena.
"Go."
She hesitated.
Then nodded.
Lyra remained.
Arin looked at her.
She looked back.
Neither moved.
Finally she sighed dramatically.
"Fine."
She hugged him quickly.
Then stepped away.
"Don’t die."
"I’ll try."
She glared.
"Wrong answer."
Arin almost smiled.
"I won’t."
"Better."
EVE handed control of the escort drones to Serena.
The two began toward the eastern corridor.
Lyra stopped after three steps and looked back.
"Big Brother?"
"Yes?"
"If something tries to terminate you..."
She pointed toward the floor.
"...terminate it first."
Lucan laughed.
Serena closed her eyes.
Arin nodded once.
"Reasonable."
Lyra left satisfied.
The moment she disappeared around the corner, Arin’s expression changed.
Lucan saw it.
"So that’s the face everyone keeps warning me about."
Arin looked toward him.
"What face?"
"The one where you stop pretending you’re calm."
"I am calm."
"No."
Lucan sheathed his sword.
"You’re controlled."
There was a difference.
Arin knew it.
He did not answer.
The platform pulsed.
«ROOT FACILITY ACTIVATION:
26%.»
EVE moved beside him.
"Founder."
"What?"
"Guardian Zero is approaching."
"Good."
Lucan frowned.
"Inside the mansion?"
"No."
The wall shook.
A massive silver eye appeared outside one of the tall windows.
Lucan sighed.
"Of course."
Guardian Zero’s voice vibrated through the glass.
"Bad place."
Arin walked toward the window.
"You know what’s below us?"
"Yes."
That got everyone’s attention.
"What is it?"
Zero’s eye dimmed.
"Founder death room."
Lucan looked at Arin.
"Subtle naming."
Arin ignored him.
"Who used it?"
The Guardian hesitated.
"Administrator."
"Seraphine?"
"Yes."
"Against Cael?"
Zero growled.
"No."
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
"Against who?"
"Before."
"Founder Twelve?"
"No."
"Eleven?"
"No."
Arin stopped.
"Then when?"
Zero’s pupil shifted.
"First."
Silence.
The answer settled heavily.
Not a later contingency.
Not something created after the system degraded.
The Termination Chamber had existed from the beginning.
Arin looked toward EVE.
"House Elysium was designed with a Founder execution system."
She said nothing.
Because she had no answer.
Guardian Zero continued.
"Administrator chooses."
"Chooses what?"
"Founder stays."
A pause.
"Founder ends."
Lucan’s expression hardened.
"So Founder Authority was never absolute."
"No."
Zero looked toward Arin.
"Administrator above."
Not anymore, Arin thought.
Or not completely.
Seraphine’s command against Lyra had failed.
That mattered.
"Why did Founders accept this?" Arin asked.
Zero’s eye closed halfway.
"Didn’t know."
That was worse.
They had thought themselves in charge.
While a hidden chamber beneath their home existed to kill them.
Lucan spoke quietly.
"That explains the Hollow Crown."
Arin looked toward him.
Lucan continued.
"If fragments of this history survived..."
"Then your organization wasn’t entirely wrong to fear the system."
"No."
Arin nodded.
"They were wrong about the solution."
Lucan’s jaw tightened.
"Control."
"Exactly."
The platform suddenly emitted a sharp chime.
«ROOT FACILITY ACTIVATION:
50%.
TERMINATION OFFICER:
AWAKENING.»
The mansion shook violently.
Something struck metal far below.
Once.
Then again.
EVE’s eyes flashed.
"Movement detected."
"Size?"
"Human."
Lucan drew his sword again.
Arin raised his hand.
"Wait."
Lucan stared.
"You are going to wait for the assassin designed specifically to kill Founders?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because it is climbing toward us."
Another impact.
Closer.
"That means it has to come through one access point."
Arin pointed toward the platform.
"We know where."
Lucan slowly smiled.
"You really are choosing the battlefield."
Arin looked at EVE.
"Seal every door into this room."
"Confirmed."
"Move all furniture away from the center."
Mechanical servitors activated.
Tables slid.
Chairs moved.
Within seconds, the dining room became an open chamber.
Arin turned toward the wall.
"Guardian Zero."
"Yes."
"Can you attack inside?"
"House small."
"That wasn’t the question."
Zero’s tail shifted outside.
"I can."
"Do not unless I order it."
Lucan stared at Arin.
"You have an ancient dragon outside the window and you don’t want it attacking?"
"If it destroys the mansion, Lyra will complain."
Lucan actually laughed.
Then stopped when he realized Arin was only half joking.
EVE deployed six security drones.
Arin looked at them.
"No fire unless hostile intent is confirmed."
Lucan frowned.
"It is called a Termination Officer."
"Names lie."
"So do people."
"Exactly."
Arin drew his sword.
Not because he expected it to matter.
Because this time he intended to be ready anyway.
The platform activated fully.
«ROOT FACILITY:
75%.»
A black column of light rose from the center.
Something appeared inside.
Humanoid.
Tall.
Armored.
Not futuristic like Arin’s combat equipment.
Older.
Elegant.
Black metal covered its body in segmented plates.
A white cloak hung from one shoulder.
Its face was hidden beneath a smooth silver mask.
No weapon visible.
The figure remained motionless.
Then the system announced:
«TERMINATION OFFICER:
A-01.
PRIMARY DIRECTIVE:
EVALUATE ACTIVE FOUNDER.»
Lucan lowered his sword slightly.
"Evaluate?"
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
Not kill.
Evaluate.
The figure stepped off the platform.
Every drone tracked it.
Guardian Zero growled outside.
A-01 stopped three meters from Arin.
Its mask turned toward him.
Then Lyra’s absence.
Then EVE.
Then Lucan.
Finally back to Arin.
A voice emerged.
Male.
Calm.
Almost bored.
"Founder Fourteen."
Arin said nothing.
The Officer continued.
"State your defense."
Lucan frowned.
"Defense against what?"
The mask turned toward him.
"You are not being evaluated."
Lucan looked offended.
Arin almost enjoyed that.
A-01 faced Arin again.
"State your defense."
Arin crossed his arms.
"I don’t have one."
Silence.
Even EVE looked toward him.
A-01 tilted its head.
"Clarify."
"You haven’t accused me of anything."
"Founder termination protocol has been activated."
"By Seraphine."
"Correct."
"She threatened my sister."
"Recorded."
"I classified her hostile."
"Recorded."
"She activated you."
"Correct."
Arin took one step forward.
"Then she needs a defense."
The room went completely silent.
Lucan slowly lowered his sword.
EVE’s eyes widened.
A-01 did not move.
Then:
"Unexpected response."
Arin held its gaze.
"Get used to it."
The Officer’s mask flickered.
Text appeared across its surface.
«REVIEWING ADMINISTRATOR ACTIONS.»
Seraphine had expected a weapon.
Maybe she had activated one.
But the system had called it an evaluator.
Arin had learned not to trust names.
He had also learned not to accept another person’s premise.
If Seraphine wanted a trial, she would be judged too.
A-01 turned slightly.
"Administrator Seraphine Elysium issued termination request under Root Article Seven."
"Reason?"
"Founder obstruction."
"Define obstruction."
"Active Founder interfered with Administrator directives."
"Which directive?"
"Isolation of Family Authority anomaly."
Arin’s expression went cold.
"Lyra."
"Affirmative."
Lucan’s face hardened too.
EVE’s Family Band glowed white.
A-01 continued.
"Administrator requested removal."
"And the System rejected it."
"Correct."
"So she bypassed the System and activated you."
"Correct."
Arin smiled faintly.
"That sounds like obstruction."
The Officer went still.
Lucan whispered:
"Oh."
EVE almost smiled.
A-01’s mask filled with rapidly changing symbols.
«LOGICAL CONFLICT DETECTED.
ROOT ARTICLE SEVEN REVIEW INITIATED.»
The mansion trembled.
Far below, Seraphine’s black authority marker flared.
A new voice entered the room.
Hers.
"Officer."
Arin looked toward the platform.
Seraphine’s voice came from everywhere.
"Execute termination."
A-01 remained still.
"Directive under review."
"Override review."
"Denied."
Silence.
Arin’s smile disappeared.
This was useful.
Seraphine had root access.
But not absolute authority.
Not anymore.
Her voice hardened.
"A-01. Administrator command."
The Officer’s mask flickered.
"Administrator authority acknowledged."
Lucan tightened his grip.
A-01 continued.
"Conflicting Founder protection clause acknowledged."
Seraphine went silent.
Arin raised his wrist.
"Officer."
"Listening."
"Who is protected under Root Article Seven?"
"House Elysium."
"Define House Elysium."
The Officer paused.
A deeper system processed beneath the mask.
Then:
"Registered infrastructure. Registered population. Active family. Authorized systems. Preservation assets."
Arin nodded toward EVE.
"Family?"
"Protected."
Toward Guardian Zero.
"Preservation asset?"
"Protected."
Toward himself.
"Founder?"
"Protected unless termination justified."
Then toward the eastern corridor, where Lyra had left.
"Family Authority holder?"
The Officer’s mask brightened.
"Core protected."
Arin looked toward the platform.
Seraphine heard every word.
"Then she attempted to remove a core-protected family member."
Silence.
"Without System approval."
A-01 processed.
Arin continued.
"Which of us obstructed House Elysium?"
Lucan stopped smiling.
Now he looked genuinely impressed.
The Officer turned its mask toward the floor.
Toward Seraphine below.
«ROOT ARTICLE SEVEN:
REEVALUATION COMPLETE.»
A pulse of white light crossed the room.
«ACTIVE FOUNDER TERMINATION:
NOT JUSTIFIED.»
Arin exhaled slowly.
Not relief.
Not yet.
Then a second line appeared.
«ADMINISTRATOR ACTION:
POTENTIAL SYSTEMIC THREAT.»
Seraphine’s voice returned.
No amusement.
No calm.
Only fury.
"You obsolete machine."
A-01 turned toward the platform.
"Insult recorded."
Lucan laughed.
Arin did not.
The Termination Officer faced him again.
"Founder Fourteen."
"Yes."
"Evaluation incomplete."
There it was.
Of course.
"What now?"
The mask split down the center.
Not opening.
Transforming.
Behind it was no face.
Only white light.
"Root command requires a Founder to prove capability to defend House Elysium against Administrator corruption."
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
"How?"
The Officer raised one hand.
A weapon materialized.
A long black spear.
Lucan immediately moved.
EVE’s drones armed.
Guardian Zero roared outside.
Arin raised his hand.
"Nobody attacks."
Lucan stared.
"The machine pulled a spear."
"I noticed."
A-01 lowered the weapon.
Not toward Arin.
Onto the floor.
It released it.
The spear struck marble.
«COMBAT AUTHORITY TEST AVAILABLE.
CONSTRUCTION AUTHORITY TEST AVAILABLE.
FAMILY AUTHORITY TEST AVAILABLE.
COMMAND AUTHORITY TEST AVAILABLE.
SELECT ONE.»
Arin read the options.
Lucan whispered:
"Combat."
Arin looked at him.
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because that’s what Seraphine expects."
EVE spoke.
"Family Authority may place Lyra at risk."
"Agreed."
Lucan frowned.
"Command?"
Arin shook his head.
He looked toward the black markers across the city.
Hidden facilities.
Dormant systems.
Unknown infrastructure.
His house had layers beneath layers.
Every problem so far had one thing in common.
House Elysium had been built around people controlling other people.
Founders.
Administrators.
Commands.
Purges.
Termination.
Maybe the answer wasn’t another fight.
Arin selected:
«CONSTRUCTION AUTHORITY TEST.»
Lucan stared.
"You’re joking."
"No."
The Officer’s spear disappeared.
"Selection confirmed."
The dining room dissolved.
Walls became blue light.
Floor became transparent.
The mansion vanished around them.
Arin found himself standing above a massive holographic model of House Elysium.
Every black hidden facility glowed beneath it.
Hundreds.
Thousands.
The Officer stood beside him.
"Founder Fourteen."
The city rotated slowly below.
"Original House Elysium architecture contains incompatible systems created by Administrators, Founders, Guardians, and later emergency councils."
Arin stared at the sheer scale.
"Objective?"
A-01 raised one hand.
Every black structure connected through lines.
Some red.
Some blue.
Some white.
"Rebuild the authority architecture."
Arin’s eyes narrowed.
"In simple terms."
The Officer turned toward him.
"Decide who controls House Elysium."
Lucan appeared beside him.
So did EVE.
Seraphine’s black marker pulsed beneath the city.
A final warning appeared.
«FAILURE:
ORIGINAL ADMINISTRATOR REGAINS ROOT CONTROL.
SUCCESS:
CURRENT FOUNDER MAY REWRITE THE HIERARCHY OF HOUSE ELYSIUM.»
Arin stared at the city.
Then slowly smiled.
Not because the task was easy.
Because for the first time, House Elysium had offered him something he actually wanted.
Not another weapon.
Not another secret.
Not another title.
A chance to change the rules.
A-01 looked toward him.
"Founder Fourteen."
"Yes?"
"You have one hour."
Arin rolled up his sleeves.
"That’s enough."
