Chapter 27: Chapter 26: Rewrite the House

One hour.

That was all House Elysium had given him.

Not one day.

Not one week.

One hour to decide how an ancient city older than every kingdom he knew should be governed.

Arin stood above the holographic model of House Elysium while thousands of authority lines crossed through the air around him.

Blue.

White.

Black.

Red.

Each represented a different layer of control.

Some belonged to the Founder.

Some to EVE.

Some to forgotten administrators.

Some to systems whose names Arin could not even pronounce.

And buried beneath all of them was the same problem.

Too many people had been given the power to decide who mattered.

A-01 stood beside him.

The Termination Officer no longer carried a spear.

It did not need one.

The city itself was the weapon now.

«TIME REMAINING:

59:42.»

Lucan looked toward the countdown.

"Wonderful."

Arin ignored him.

EVE stood on his other side, her eyes tracking streams of information moving faster than any human could read.

"Founder, I can assist with structural interpretation."

"Do it."

The authority map expanded.

At once, the chaos became slightly clearer.

A central white core sat beneath the mansion.

From it spread four major branches.

«FOUNDER AUTHORITY

ADMINISTRATOR AUTHORITY

KEEPER AUTHORITY

PRESERVATION AUTHORITY»

Arin stared.

"Where is Family Authority?"

EVE’s expression changed.

A fifth branch appeared.

Much smaller.

Almost hidden.

It did not connect to the central core.

Instead, it wrapped around the others.

White lines.

Protective.

Adaptive.

"That’s wrong," Arin said.

Lucan looked toward him.

"What is?"

"Family Authority isn’t beneath Founder Authority."

"No."

EVE’s eyes narrowed.

"It appears to exist outside the original hierarchy."

Arin looked at her.

"Meaning?"

"It was likely added later."

A-01 answered.

"Incorrect."

Everyone turned.

The Officer’s faceless white head remained still.

"Family Authority predates current Founder hierarchy."

Silence.

Lucan frowned.

"Then why is it barely connected?"

A-01 replied.

"Restricted after First Collapse."

Arin’s eyes hardened.

"By Seraphine?"

"Partial authorization."

"Who else?"

«DATA SEALED.»

Lucan sighed.

"Of course."

Arin looked back at the map.

Family Authority had existed first.

Then someone had restricted it.

That alone told him where to begin.

"Show me the current hierarchy."

The map reorganized itself.

At the top:

«ORIGINAL ADMINISTRATOR.»

Below:

«PRIMARY FOUNDER.»

Below that:

«KEEPER.»

Then:

«GUARDIANS.

CIVILIZATION SYSTEMS.

FAMILY.

RESIDENTS.»

Arin stared at the order.

Then laughed once.

Lucan looked toward him.

"What?"

"This is terrible."

"It lasted thousands of years."

"Exactly."

Arin pointed toward the hierarchy.

"The Administrator controls the Founder."

Another line.

"The Founder controls almost everything else."

Another.

"Family sits near the bottom."

He looked toward EVE.

"And everyone wonders why the city kept breaking."

Lucan crossed his arms.

"Because too much authority was concentrated at the top."

"Yes."

"Yet you’re the one currently trying to become primary Founder."

Arin glanced toward him.

"I’m trying to stop someone from killing my sister."

"Fair."

A-01 spoke.

"Hierarchy modification requires preservation of system coherence."

Arin looked toward it.

"In normal words."

"You may not simply delete all authority."

"Good."

"I wasn’t planning to."

Lucan raised an eyebrow.

"You sound disappointed."

"I’m disappointed you thought I was that stupid."

"Again. Fair."

Arin moved his hand through the map.

Founder Authority pulsed.

He selected it.

A list appeared.

«CURRENT FOUNDER POWERS:

CITY COMMAND

DEFENSE OVERRIDE

SYSTEM ACCESS

FAMILY REGISTRATION

CIVILIZATION ACTIVATION

LEGACY ACCESS

EMERGENCY PURGE AUTHORITY — LOCKED

TERMINATION REQUEST AUTHORITY — LOCKED»

Arin stopped.

"Founder can purge too."

EVE went still.

Lucan’s expression darkened.

A-01 did not react.

Arin looked at it.

"Explain."

"Founder purge access restricted after Cael Elysium incident."

That name again.

"Cael used it?"

"Yes."

"Against who?"

«DATA SEALED.»

Arin closed his eyes briefly.

Every road in this city seemed to lead back to Cael eventually.

Fine.

Not today’s problem.

He dragged Founder Authority downward.

Lucan frowned.

"What are you doing?"

"Removing it from the top."

EVE’s head snapped toward him.

"Founder?"

Arin kept moving the hierarchy.

Administrator remained at the top.

Founder shifted beside Keeper instead of below it.

The System immediately rejected the change.

«INVALID STRUCTURE.

PRIMARY COMMAND NODE REQUIRED.»

Arin nodded.

"Expected."

Lucan stared.

"You wanted it to reject you?"

"I wanted to know what it considered necessary."

He looked at the central core.

"Primary command node."

EVE understood.

"The city requires a final authority for emergency decisions."

"Exactly."

Lucan stepped closer.

"So someone must be at the top."

Arin looked at him.

"No."

He selected the central core.

Then split it.

Three white nodes appeared.

The System flashed violently.

«WARNING.

MULTIPLE PRIMARY NODES MAY CREATE COMMAND CONFLICT.»

Arin continued anyway.

Node One:

«FOUNDER.»

Node Two:

«FAMILY CORE.»

Node Three:

«KEEPER.»

Lucan stared.

"You’re dividing ultimate authority between yourself, Lyra, and EVE."

"No."

Arin adjusted again.

Founder became:

«ACTIVE FOUNDER COUNCIL NODE.»

Family became:

«FAMILY PROTECTION CORE.»

Keeper became:

«SYSTEM CONTINUITY CORE.»

EVE’s eyes widened.

"Founder..."

"Founder handles external decisions."

He pointed.

"Family Core handles anything affecting registered family."

Another.

"Keeper handles city continuity."

Lucan slowly smiled.

"So if you go insane—"

"EVE and Family Authority can stop me."

EVE looked at him sharply.

"You are intentionally limiting your own authority."

"Yes."

A-01 spoke.

"Rare."

Arin looked toward it.

"Useful comment."

"Recorded."

Lucan laughed quietly.

The System processed.

«TRI-NODE STRUCTURE:

PARTIALLY VALID.

CRITICAL FLAW:

CONFLICT RESOLUTION.»

Arin nodded.

There it was.

If Founder, Family, and Keeper disagreed, someone still needed the final word.

Lucan pointed toward the Administrator node.

"That’s why Seraphine existed."

Arin looked at the black node above everything.

"Not anymore."

He selected it.

«ORIGINAL ADMINISTRATOR AUTHORITY CANNOT BE DELETED.»

"Didn’t ask."

He moved it.

Down.

Not beneath Founder.

Not beneath Family.

Outside the core entirely.

A separate branch.

«LEGACY ADVISORY NODE.»

Lucan stared.

EVE almost smiled.

A-01 remained still.

The System flashed.

«ADMINISTRATOR AUTHORITY REASSIGNMENT:

REJECTED.

ROOT PERMISSIONS EXCEED CURRENT FOUNDER AUTHORITY.»

Arin’s eyes narrowed.

Of course.

He only possessed eighteen percent.

"Can I restrict Administrator access?"

A-01 answered.

"Yes."

"How much?"

"Depends on Trial result."

There it was.

The entire test wasn’t asking him to fully rewrite the city now.

It was asking what structure he believed in.

A philosophy encoded as architecture.

Arin continued.

"Conflict resolution should not belong to one person."

Lucan frowned.

"Then who resolves it?"

"Depends on the conflict."

He pointed toward the nodes.

"If it’s military or external threat—Founder priority."

He moved another line.

"If it concerns family—Family Core priority."

Another.

"If it concerns infrastructure or city survival—Keeper priority."

EVE’s eyes flashed.

"Contextual supremacy."

"Exactly."

Lucan crossed his arms.

"And if the categories overlap?"

Arin stopped.

That was the real problem.

House Elysium’s history had been built from overlapping emergencies.

Founders choosing the city over family.

Administrators killing Founders in the name of civilization.

Systems deciding people were acceptable losses.

He looked at Family Authority.

Then remembered Cabin Zero.

The false Lyra.

The choice he had refused.

An idea formed.

"Any decision requiring the deliberate sacrifice of a registered family member..."

He created a new rule.

"...requires unanimous approval."

EVE stared.

Lucan frowned.

"From all three nodes?"

"Yes."

"What if sacrificing one family member saves a million people?"

Arin looked toward him.

"Then all three nodes better agree."

Lucan’s eyes sharpened.

"That’s emotional."

"No."

Arin’s voice remained calm.

"It’s friction."

He pointed toward the map.

"Easy sacrifice is dangerous."

Silence.

"One person should never have the ability to declare someone expendable simply because the numbers look convenient."

EVE’s expression softened.

Arin continued.

"If the situation is truly that terrible, Founder, Family, and Keeper all agree."

"And if they don’t?"

"Find another solution."

Lucan laughed softly.

"You really hate sacrifice."

"I hate lazy sacrifice."

That silenced him.

A-01 processed.

«PRINCIPLE ACCEPTED:

MANDATORY CONSENSUS FOR FAMILY SACRIFICE.»

The white Family lines brightened.

Arin did not stop.

"Residents need protection too."

Lucan looked surprised.

"They’re not family."

"Doesn’t matter."

He selected Residents.

Moved them upward.

Not equal to Family.

But no longer at the bottom.

«CIVILIAN RIGHTS NODE.»

EVE’s head tilted.

"That concept did not exist in original architecture."

"Now it does."

Lucan looked toward him.

"Rights?"

"Basic protections."

Arin created rules.

«NO FORCED MEMORY PURGE WITHOUT REVIEW.

NO TERMINATION WITHOUT EVIDENCE.

NO FAMILY ISOLATION AS FOUNDER CONDITION.

NO CHILD MAY BE USED AS SYSTEM KEY WITHOUT GUARDIAN CONSENT.

NO RESIDENT MAY BE CLASSIFIED AS EXPENDABLE BY AUTOMATED PROTOCOL ALONE.»

The map trembled.

A-01 turned toward Arin.

"Significant deviation."

"Good."

"Deviation increases instability risk."

"So does murder."

A-01 processed.

"Statement valid."

Lucan laughed again.

Arin looked at him.

"Do you want to contribute?"

The question surprised him.

"Me?"

"You’re still a claimant."

Lucan’s expression became cautious.

"You actually want my opinion."

"I want useful opposition."

That wiped away the humor.

Lucan stepped closer to the map.

He studied it.

Then pointed toward Founder Authority.

"Your structure protects against tyranny."

"Yes."

"But it’s slow."

"Probably."

"In war, slow kills people."

"Agreed."

Lucan moved Emergency Defense beneath Founder priority.

"Temporary emergency authority."

Arin frowned.

"How temporary?"

"Until the threat ends."

"Too vague."

"One hour before review."

Arin considered.

"Thirty minutes."

"Ridiculous."

"Thirty."

"Forty-five."

"Fine."

Lucan smiled.

A rule formed.

«EMERGENCY FOUNDER OVERRIDE:

MAXIMUM DURATION — 45 MINUTES.

EXTENSION REQUIRES KEEPER OR FAMILY CORE APPROVAL.»

EVE nodded.

"Acceptable."

Lucan looked toward her.

"I wasn’t asking."

"You require approval under your own rule."

Lucan stared.

Arin smiled faintly.

"Good system."

Lucan regretted his contribution immediately.

«TIME REMAINING:

31:08.»

Half the hour gone.

Arin looked toward the black Administrator node.

Still outside everything.

Still connected by hidden root lines.

Seraphine remained the main problem.

"Show Administrator permissions."

The list appeared.

It was enormous.

Thousands of entries.

Arin skimmed the first dozen.

«FOUNDER SELECTION.

FOUNDER REJECTION.

MEMORY PURGE.

FAMILY ISOLATION.

LEGACY RESET.

CITY RESTART.

ARK SEAL.

ROOT EXECUTION.

BLOODLINE DESIGNATION.»

Lucan stared.

"That’s not an administrator."

"No."

Arin’s expression hardened.

"That’s a god."

EVE spoke quietly.

"Within Elysium, effectively."

Arin looked toward A-01.

"Can those permissions be divided?"

"Yes."

"Then divide them."

Lucan frowned.

"Across who?"

"Nobody gets all of them."

Arin began stripping powers conceptually.

Founder Selection moved to:

«MULTI-NODE REVIEW.»

Memory Purge moved to:

«KEEPER + FOUNDER AUTHORIZATION.»

Family Isolation moved to:

«PROHIBITED WITHOUT FAMILY CORE CONSENT.»

Legacy Reset moved to:

«FULL COUNCIL + ROOT FACILITY CONFIRMATION.»

Root Execution moved to:

«TERMINATION OFFICER INDEPENDENT REVIEW + FULL COUNCIL.»

Ark Seal moved to:

«PRESERVATION COUNCIL.»

Lucan stopped him.

"Preservation Council?"

"We have Guardians."

"Zero."

"Maybe more."

EVE added:

"Ark systems may contain preservation intelligences."

"Then they get a seat."

Lucan stared.

"You are building bureaucracy."

Arin looked at him.

"I’m building obstacles between fear and murder."

Lucan went silent.

That answer stayed with him.

A-01 processed the structure.

«ARCHITECTURE COHERENCE:

61%.»

Arin frowned.

"Only sixty-one."

EVE pointed toward the map.

"Because no final safeguard exists if all three core nodes are corrupted."

Arin looked at her.

"Can that happen?"

"Anything can happen."

Lucan sighed.

"Comforting."

Arin looked at the city.

Founder corrupted.

Family Authority corrupted.

Keeper corrupted.

Then what?

Another absolute Administrator would solve that problem.

And create Seraphine again.

He needed something outside personal authority.

Not a person.

A rule.

A constitution.

The word from Earth surfaced.

Arin smiled slowly.

Lucan saw it.

"What?"

"I know what’s missing."

He created a new central layer.

Not above the nodes.

Beneath them.

Foundation.

«ELYSIUM COVENANT.»

EVE’s eyes widened.

A-01 turned fully toward him.

Lucan frowned.

"What is that?"

"Rules nobody gets to ignore."

Arin began writing.

Not hundreds.

Only a few.

Simple.

«FIRST:

HOUSE ELYSIUM EXISTS TO PRESERVE LIFE, FAMILY, AND FUTURE CIVILIZATION.»

Another.

«SECOND:

NO AUTHORITY EXISTS ABOVE THE PURPOSE OF THE HOUSE.»

Another.

«THIRD:

NO FOUNDER, ADMINISTRATOR, KEEPER, GUARDIAN, OR SYSTEM MAY OWN THE PEOPLE IT PROTECTS.»

The entire holographic city trembled.

Lucan looked sharply toward him.

Arin continued.

«FOURTH:

FAMILY MAY NOT BE CREATED, REMOVED, OR DESTROYED FOR THE PURPOSE OF MANIPULATING FOUNDER AUTHORITY.»

EVE’s eyes flashed violently.

Somewhere deep in the system, something reacted.

Arin did not stop.

«FIFTH:

THE HOUSE MUST BE CAPABLE OF SURVIVING ITS FOUNDER.»

That one felt important.

He remembered Garrick.

The trial settlements.

The signal towers continuing without him.

A city dependent on one man was not a civilization.

«SIXTH:

ANY AUTHORITY THAT VIOLATES THE COVENANT MAY BE CHALLENGED BY ANY CORE NODE.»

Lucan stared.

"Any?"

"Any."

"Even you?"

"Especially me."

EVE looked at him.

Something unreadable passed across her face.

A-01 processed.

The city map changed.

White light spread beneath every branch.

Founder.

Family.

Keeper.

Guardians.

Residents.

Administrator.

All now rested on the Covenant instead of beneath one individual.

«ARCHITECTURE COHERENCE:

84%.»

Arin smiled.

Better.

Lucan pointed toward the remaining sixteen percent.

"What’s missing?"

A-01 answered.

"Enforcement."

Arin nodded.

Rules without enforcement were decoration.

"Who enforces the Covenant?"

Lucan immediately said:

"Termination Officer."

Arin looked toward A-01.

The machine remained still.

"Conflict."

EVE agreed.

"A-01 itself is a legacy system and could be corrupted."

Arin looked at Guardian authority.

Then Family.

Then Founder.

No one entity.

"Distributed enforcement."

EVE’s expression sharpened.

"Explain."

"Any Covenant violation needs two independent confirmations before enforcement."

Lucan frowned.

"Too slow."

"For normal cases."

Arin added:

«IMMEDIATE FAMILY THREAT:

FAMILY CORE MAY ACT FIRST.

REVIEW AFTER ACTION.»

Then:

«IMMEDIATE CITY-LEVEL THREAT:

KEEPER MAY ACT FIRST.

REVIEW AFTER ACTION.»

Then:

«EXTERNAL MILITARY THREAT:

FOUNDER MAY ACT FIRST.

REVIEW AFTER ACTION.»

Finally:

«ROOT-LEVEL CORRUPTION:

ANY TWO CORE NODES MAY SUSPEND THIRD NODE TEMPORARILY.

PERMANENT REMOVAL REQUIRES FULL REVIEW.»

Lucan slowly nodded.

"Checks."

"Yes."

"Balances."

"Yes."

"You’ve thought about this before."

Arin glanced toward him.

"Different world."

Lucan wisely did not ask.

A-01 processed again.

«ARCHITECTURE COHERENCE:

97%.»

Three percent missing.

Time:

«08:43.»

Arin’s jaw tightened.

EVE scanned everything.

"Unknown requirement."

Lucan looked around.

"Maybe it wants an Administrator."

"No."

"Maybe despite everything, someone must have final authority."

Arin stared at the Covenant.

Then realized something.

All rules.

All structures.

All protections.

But no method for succession.

Founders died.

Keepers could be destroyed.

Family changed.

Civilizations outlived individuals.

That had been the original problem.

Seraphine survived everything because root access had no successor.

Arin added one final rule.

«SUCCESSION:

NO AUTHORITY MAY BECOME PERMANENT BY DEFAULT.

ALL CORE ROLES MUST HAVE A SUCCESSION PROCESS.

VACANT ROLES TRANSFER TEMPORARILY, NEVER ABSOLUTELY.

FUTURE HOLDERS MUST ACCEPT THE COVENANT BEFORE RECEIVING AUTHORITY.»

The city froze.

All light disappeared.

Lucan looked around.

"What happened?"

Arin waited.

One second.

Two.

Then House Elysium ignited beneath them.

Every line turned white.

«ARCHITECTURE COHERENCE:

100%.»

A-01 lowered its head.

Not a bow.

Almost.

"Construction Authority Test complete."

The countdown vanished.

EVE stared at the new structure.

Lucan stared too.

Arin exhaled.

"Good."

Then Seraphine’s voice entered the holographic space.

"You arrogant child."

Arin looked toward the black Administrator node.

It was flickering.

Her silhouette appeared above it.

"You think governance is a puzzle?"

"No."

"You think rules restrain necessity?"

"Sometimes."

"You think consensus survives extinction?"

"No."

Arin looked directly at her.

"That’s why I built emergency authority."

Her expression hardened.

"You dismantled everything that made Elysium effective."

"No."

He pointed toward the Covenant.

"I dismantled everything that made you indispensable."

Silence.

That hit harder than any insult.

Seraphine’s black node began cracking.

A-01 spoke.

"Test result accepted."

The entire architecture descended into the city.

Not permanently.

A preview.

A possible future.

«REWARD:

FOUNDER AUTHORITY INCREASED.

18% → 26%.

ROOT ACCESS:

LIMITED.

ADMINISTRATOR RESTRICTION AUTHORITY:

UNLOCKED.

COVENANT PROTOTYPE:

STORED.»

Lucan’s eyes widened.

"Twenty-six."

Arin barely noticed.

A new option appeared before him.

«LIMITED ROOT ACTION AVAILABLE.

SELECT ONE:

RESTRICT SERAPHINE’S CITY ACCESS.

RESTRICT SERAPHINE’S MEMORY ACCESS.

RESTRICT SERAPHINE’S FAMILY ACCESS.

RESTRICT SERAPHINE’S ARK ACCESS.»

One choice.

Only one.

Lucan read them.

"City."

EVE immediately said:

"Family."

Arin looked at both.

Then thought about the infant.

The Ark.

His mother.

Cael.

Lyra.

Seraphine had already failed to kill Lyra directly.

Family Authority protected her.

But Ark access?

Seraphine had spent thousands of years manipulating bloodlines and Founders.

If she could reach Ark Prime...

Children became tools again.

Arin selected:

«RESTRICT SERAPHINE’S ARK ACCESS.»

EVE looked surprised.

Lucan did too.

Seraphine’s face changed completely.

That told Arin he’d chosen correctly.

«CONFIRM?»

"Confirm."

White light slammed through the black Administrator node.

Seraphine screamed.

Not from pain.

From fury.

«ORIGINAL ADMINISTRATOR:

ARK ROOT ACCESS REVOKED.

PRESERVATION SYSTEMS:

LOCKED AGAINST SERAPHINE ELYSIUM.»

The holographic space shattered.

Arin landed back in the dining hall.

EVE beside him.

Lucan several steps away.

A-01 standing silently on the black lift.

Then every alarm in House Elysium activated.

Not hostile.

Emergency.

A message appeared.

«ARK PRIME HAS DETECTED ADMINISTRATOR ACCESS LOSS.

AUTOMATIC SUCCESSION PROTOCOL INITIATED.

SEARCHING FOR PRESERVATION AUTHORITY HOLDER...»

Arin’s stomach tightened.

"Who qualifies?"

The System answered.

«MATCH FOUND.»

The mansion windows turned white.

A new family signature appeared.

Not Lyra.

Not EVE.

Not Arin.

Not the infant.

Deep beneath Sublevel Nine.

«PRESERVATION AUTHORITY HOLDER:

ELARA ELYSIUM.»

Arin froze.

Then another line appeared.

«ARK PRIME IS REQUESTING HER IMMEDIATE RETURN.

WARNING:

FAILURE TO RESPOND WITHIN 24 HOURS WILL TRIGGER AUTOMATIC ARK AWAKENING.»

Lucan looked toward Arin.

"That sounds bad."

Arin stared at the timer.

Twenty-four hours.

His mother below the city.

Seraphine hostile.

Cael free.

Ark Prime preparing to awaken.

Arin rolled his shoulders.

"Good."

Lucan stared.

"Good?"

Arin looked toward the sealed workshop district.

"For once, something gave me a deadline before causing the disaster."

He turned toward EVE.

"Get Guardian Zero."

Then toward A-01.

"You’re coming."

The Officer tilted its head.

"Reason?"

Arin’s expression hardened.

"We’re going to retrieve my mother."

Lucan stepped forward.

"And Seraphine?"

Arin looked toward the floor.

Toward the woman who had spent generations deciding which Founders deserved families.

"If she gets in the way..."

His Authority Band flared white.

"...she can test the new hierarchy personally."
