AFTER BEING EXILED: MY SISTER AND I BUILD HIDDEN CIVILIZATIONS
Chapter 28 - 27: The Descent for Elara
Chapter 28: Chapter 27: The Descent for Elara
Arin did not rush.
That surprised everyone.
The moment Ark Prime placed a twenty-four-hour deadline over his mother’s life, every instinct in the room expected him to charge straight toward Sublevel Nine.
He didn’t.
He stood in the dining hall and started assigning jobs.
"EVE."
"Founder."
"Full medical preparation in the eastern infirmary."
"For Elara?"
"For everyone."
EVE’s eyes flickered.
"Clarify."
"If Sublevel Nine is compromised, I am not assuming only one person comes back injured."
She nodded immediately.
"Understood."
"Lyra remains inside the mansion."
Lyra opened her mouth.
Arin looked at her.
She stopped.
Then she raised one finger.
"I want it recorded that I disagree."
"Recorded."
"I’m very brave."
"Also recorded."
"I can help."
"You already are."
That surprised her.
Arin pointed toward her Family Band.
"Keep the Family Link open."
Lyra’s expression changed.
"No matter what happens?"
"No matter what."
She straightened.
That was better.
Not hiding her.
Giving her a role.
Arin turned toward Serena.
"You stay with Lyra and the infant."
Serena’s jaw tightened.
"I should go."
"You can barely stand."
"I know those tunnels."
"Not these."
She didn’t argue with that.
"Your job is to identify anything Elara says that sounds wrong."
Serena frowned.
"Wrong?"
"Memories. Habits. Names. Anything."
Understanding appeared in her face.
"You don’t completely trust the woman below."
"I trust my mother."
Arin’s eyes hardened.
"I don’t yet know if that’s really who we’re going to find."
Serena slowly nodded.
Good.
Lucan crossed his arms.
"And me?"
Arin looked toward him.
"You come."
A faint smile appeared.
"Finally."
"Don’t enjoy it."
"Too late."
"A-01."
The Termination Officer stood near the black platform.
"Listening."
"You remain one step behind me at all times."
"Reason?"
"If Seraphine invokes root authority, I need someone who can interpret it."
"Accepted."
"Guardian Zero?"
The mansion windows darkened.
Something enormous shifted outside.
Then came the familiar voice.
"Ready."
The glass trembled.
Lucan looked toward the wall.
"How exactly is that thing coming underground?"
Guardian Zero answered from outside.
"I make hole."
Arin closed his eyes.
"No."
A disappointed rumble came through the mansion.
"Existing access only."
"Less fun."
"Good."
Arin turned toward the city map.
The Central Workshop remained isolated.
Sublevel Nine pulsed beneath it like a black wound.
No visible routes.
No lift access.
No mapped maintenance tunnels.
But EVE had been searching.
A new line appeared.
«LEGACY MAINTENANCE ROUTE FOUND.
STATUS:
SEALED.
ACCESS POINT:
WESTERN GARDENS.»
Arin stared.
The same location tied to the First Door.
Of course.
Lucan looked over his shoulder.
"Everything leads to those gardens."
"Which means they’re important."
"Or bait."
"Both can be true."
Arin selected the route.
A map unfolded.
The tunnel did not run straight to Sublevel Nine.
It curved beneath the mansion, passed a sealed residential zone, then descended through what appeared to be a maintenance spine running parallel to the Central Workshop.
No direct access.
Good.
That meant Seraphine might not control it.
"How long?"
EVE answered.
"Approximately forty minutes to the prison perimeter."
"Prepare lights. Medical packs. Manual tools."
Lucan raised an eyebrow.
"No weapons?"
"I didn’t say that."
Arin opened his inventory.
The System immediately displayed available equipment.
Not much.
The Trial had taught him something important.
Having access to endless locked technology was useless if he couldn’t field reliable equipment now.
He selected a compact defensive loadout.
«MK-I FIELD COMBAT SUIT
BASIC ENERGY SIDEARM
MULTI-TOOL
EMERGENCY SHIELD MODULE»
Blue light formed around him.
The combat suit assembled in layers.
Dark material wrapped his torso first.
Then segmented armor plates locked over his shoulders, chest, legs, and forearms.
A transparent interface flickered across his vision.
Lucan stared.
"You had armor too."
Arin looked at him.
"Yes."
"I really hate you."
"Useful."
The sidearm formed against Arin’s thigh.
He checked it once.
Not dramatically.
Mechanically.
Ready.
Lucan looked at his sword.
Then at Arin’s armor.
"This feels unfair."
"You cut Founder Authority from a corpse."
Lucan paused.
"Fair point."
Arin started toward the western gardens.
No speeches.
No final declarations.
They had twenty-three hours and forty-one minutes remaining.
He intended to use them well.
---
The western gardens looked ordinary.
That was the first problem.
House Elysium had taught Arin that ordinary things were often the least trustworthy.
Flowers.
Trimmed hedges.
Stone paths.
A dry fountain.
The garden stretched behind the mansion in quiet terraces.
Lyra had probably played here earlier.
That thought made him more cautious.
EVE stopped beside the fountain.
"The route begins below."
Lucan glanced at the stone basin.
"Of course it does."
A-01 stepped forward.
"Manual opening recommended."
Arin frowned.
"Why manual?"
"Electronic access may alert root systems."
Good answer.
Arin removed the multi-tool.
The fountain’s base had no visible seam.
A-01 pointed toward three stones.
"Pressure sequence."
Arin pressed them.
Nothing.
Then he rotated the bronze centerpiece.
The entire basin unlocked with a dull mechanical click.
Lucan smiled.
"You’ve done this before?"
"No."
"You look annoyingly competent."
"I listen."
The fountain split into six sections.
Beneath it, a stairwell descended into white darkness.
Guardian Zero’s head appeared over the garden wall.
"Too small."
Arin looked up.
"I noticed."
"I make bigger."
"No."
The Guardian looked wounded.
Lucan actually laughed.
Then Zero’s body shimmered.
Its outline compressed.
Not shrinking exactly.
Reconfiguring.
Armor plates folded inward.
Wings dissolved into light.
Its enormous form contracted until what remained stood slightly larger than a horse.
Arin stared.
Lucan stopped laughing.
Guardian Zero shook itself.
"Better."
Arin’s System flashed.
«GUARDIAN COMBAT CONFIGURATION:
RESTRICTED FORM.»
"Why didn’t you do that earlier?"
Zero tilted its head.
"Didn’t ask."
Arin had no answer.
That annoyed him.
They descended.
---
The maintenance tunnel was nothing like the city above.
No marble.
No gardens.
No polished metal.
Just narrow corridors built from dark structural alloy.
Pipes ran along the ceiling.
Old cables disappeared behind sealed panels.
Every hundred meters, markings appeared on the walls.
Not words.
Numbers.
04-12.
04-11.
04-10.
Descending.
Lucan noticed.
"Levels?"
A-01 answered.
"Foundation layers."
"How deep does this city go?"
"Current mapped depth: insufficient."
Lucan looked toward Arin.
"You inherited a city and nobody knows how big it is."
"I’ve noticed."
Guardian Zero sniffed the wall.
"Old."
"Helpful," Lucan muttered.
Zero looked at him.
"You are noisy again."
Arin almost smiled.
They continued.
At the first junction, the tunnel split into three.
One route appeared clean.
One partially collapsed.
One covered in black root markings.
Arin stopped.
"Which one leads to Sublevel Nine?"
A-01 indicated the black route.
"Direct."
Arin looked at the collapsed one.
"And that?"
"Indirect."
"Take indirect."
Lucan frowned.
"Why?"
"Because Seraphine wants us to use direct routes."
"That is an assumption."
"Yes."
"Evidence?"
"She’s still alive."
Lucan thought.
Then nodded.
"I hate that this makes sense."
They climbed over the collapsed section.
Guardian Zero moved first, shifting debris with its forelegs.
A-01 followed.
Arin moved next.
Lucan last.
The indirect tunnel descended gradually.
No alarms.
No messages.
That worried Arin more.
Then the Family Link activated.
Lyra’s voice.
"Big Brother?"
"I’m here."
"EVE says the Ark timer changed."
Arin stopped.
"How?"
"Twenty-one hours."
He checked.
«ARK PRIME RESPONSE WINDOW:
21:03:17»
Three hours vanished.
No.
Accelerated.
"Reason?"
EVE’s voice entered.
"Unknown. Possibly Preservation Authority proximity."
Elara.
The closer they came, the faster Ark Prime reacted.
"Can you slow it?"
"No."
Arin’s jaw tightened.
"Keep monitoring."
Lyra’s voice returned.
"Are you okay?"
"Yes."
"Lucan?"
"Unfortunately."
Lucan looked offended.
Lyra giggled.
Good.
Normal.
Arin needed that.
"Call again in thirty minutes."
"Promise."
The link closed.
Lucan looked toward him.
"You do realize she likes me."
"No."
"She laughed."
"At you."
"Still progress."
Arin kept walking.
---
Twenty minutes later, they reached the first body.
Arin raised his hand.
Everyone stopped.
The corpse lay face down beside a maintenance panel.
Human.
Male.
Black clothing.
No armor.
No visible weapon.
Lucan knelt.
"Hollow Crown."
Arin looked at him.
"Yours?"
"Not mine."
"Your organization."
"Former organization."
"Convenient."
Lucan ignored that.
He rolled the corpse over.
The man’s face was gray.
No wounds.
No blood.
A black mark covered his throat.
A-01 scanned him.
«CAUSE OF DEATH:
AUTHORITY SHOCK.
TIME:
APPROXIMATELY 11 MINUTES AGO.»
Arin’s expression changed.
Recent.
Someone had come through here shortly before them.
"How many?"
A-01 scanned traces.
"Minimum five."
Lucan stood.
"They got ahead of us."
"No."
Arin looked toward the corpse.
"They were already here."
A black symbol appeared beneath the dead man’s collar.
Seraphine’s root mark.
Not Founder Authority.
Administrator.
Guardian Zero growled.
"Bad smell."
Arin looked at it.
"Seraphine?"
"No."
"What then?"
Zero moved closer.
Sniffed.
Its silver eyes narrowed.
"Empty."
Lucan frowned.
"Empty what?"
"Person."
Arin felt cold.
"Explain."
Guardian Zero tapped the corpse with one claw.
"Body here."
Another tap.
"Person gone."
A-01 turned.
"Soul displacement possible."
Lucan stared.
"That exists?"
A-01 answered.
"Yes."
Arin hated learning that.
"Can Seraphine do it?"
"Administrator authority historically included consciousness transfer."
Of course it did.
Arin looked down the tunnel.
Five bodies.
Possibly no people inside them anymore.
Then where were the minds?
Or souls?
He didn’t want the answer yet.
They moved faster.
---
The second body appeared five minutes later.
Then the third.
Then two together.
All Hollow Crown.
All dead.
All emptied.
Lucan became quieter with each one.
Arin noticed.
"You knew them."
"One."
"Which?"
Lucan pointed toward the woman beside the wall.
"Maera."
"Friend?"
"No."
"Enemy?"
"No."
"Then what?"
Lucan’s face tightened.
"Someone I trained with."
Arin gave him a second.
No more.
"We keep moving."
Lucan nodded.
Good.
They reached a sealed door.
No visible handle.
No access panel.
Just one sentence etched into the metal.
RETURN ONLY WITH FAMILY.
Arin stared.
Lucan read it.
"That’s concerning."
Guardian Zero moved closer.
"Old door."
"You know it?"
"Yes."
"What is behind it?"
Zero’s silver eyes dimmed.
"Home road."
Arin looked at A-01.
"Meaning?"
"Legacy family passage."
"To Sublevel Nine?"
"Possibly."
Arin raised his Authority Band.
The door reacted.
White light traced the words.
Then another prompt appeared.
«FAMILY AUTHORITY HOLDER REQUIRED.»
Lucan looked at Arin.
"Lyra."
Arin’s expression hardened.
"No."
A-01 spoke.
"Remote Family Link may qualify."
That was different.
Arin activated the connection.
"Lyra."
Immediate answer.
"Yes?"
"I need you to do something."
"Finally."
Arin ignored the satisfaction in her voice.
"A door needs Family Authority."
"Okay."
"Do not accept anything except opening access."
There was a pause.
"Why?"
"Because ancient systems like tricks."
"That’s fair."
A small white symbol appeared on the door.
Lyra’s voice echoed through the corridor.
"Family Link authorization."
The door responded.
«FAMILY MEMBER LYRA ELYSIUM RECOGNIZED.
OPEN LEGACY FAMILY PASSAGE?
[YES]
[NO]»
"Yes," Lyra said.
The lock disengaged.
Arin immediately closed the link.
"Good job."
"I know."
Then:
"Big Brother?"
"Yes?"
"Come back."
"I will."
The connection ended.
Lucan looked at him.
"You never say ’try’ anymore."
Arin glanced toward him.
"No."
"Good."
That surprised Arin.
He didn’t answer.
The door opened.
Warm air emerged.
Not prison air.
Not maintenance air.
Home air.
Wood.
Dust.
Citrus.
Arin froze.
Orange.
Guardian Zero made a soft sound.
"Elara."
The passage beyond looked nothing like Elysium.
It resembled the corridor of House Valerius.
Not the entire estate.
One section.
The eastern family wing.
Arin knew every detail.
The wallpaper.
The carved railing.
The window overlooking the greenhouse.
Impossible.
Lucan stepped forward.
"This is Valerius Manor."
"Copy."
"Maybe."
Arin’s hand moved toward the sidearm.
"Nothing here is real until proven."
They entered.
---
The corridor remained silent.
Sunlight shone through windows despite the fact they were deep underground.
Arin approached one.
The greenhouse outside looked exactly as he remembered.
His mother stood among the orange trees.
Younger.
Laughing.
A small Arin ran beside her.
He stopped.
The memory moved without him.
Not an illusion reacting to his presence.
A recording.
Elara caught the boy and lifted him.
Arin remembered that day.
He had been six.
He had stolen three oranges.
She had blamed the gardener.
His chest tightened.
Lucan stood beside another window.
His face had gone completely still.
Arin looked.
Different memory.
Elara sat in a dark nursery holding an infant.
Not Arin.
Lucan.
A younger Duke Aldric stood beside her.
Angry.
Another man waited near the door.
Face hidden.
Elara said something.
No sound.
Lucan touched the glass.
"That’s me."
Arin said nothing.
The memory continued.
Aldric turned away.
The hidden man took the infant.
Elara lunged.
Two guards restrained her.
Lucan’s face changed.
"He gave me away."
Maybe.
Or the recording had been edited.
Arin had learned enough not to trust pain as proof.
"Don’t assume yet."
Lucan looked at him.
"You saw—"
"I saw an image."
Lucan’s expression hardened.
"That was Father."
"Probably."
"Probably?"
Arin stepped closer.
"If Seraphine wants us angry, this is exactly what she’d show."
Lucan stared.
Then slowly lowered his hand.
Good.
He was learning too.
Guardian Zero continued down the corridor.
"Elara close."
Arin followed.
The memory windows changed.
Elara older.
Training with Serena.
Elara secretly examining an Elysium dagger.
Elara crying alone.
Elara holding newborn Lyra.
Elara standing before a black Authority Band.
Then—
Elara kneeling before Seraphine.
Arin stopped.
Seraphine touched his mother’s forehead.
Black light entered her.
The image vanished.
A-01 spoke.
"Memory transfer."
Lucan swore.
Arin’s hand tightened around the sidearm.
"Can Seraphine possess her?"
A-01 answered.
"Possible."
There it was.
The reason Elara had warned him not to descend.
Maybe his mother was not alone inside her own body.
Arin looked toward Guardian Zero.
"Can you identify Elara if someone else is using her body?"
The Guardian’s ears—or what passed for them—shifted.
"Smell two."
"Two?"
"Elara."
A pause.
"Other."
Arin exhaled slowly.
Good.
Useful.
"Then you stay beside me when we find her."
Zero nodded.
The corridor ended.
A wooden door stood ahead.
Simple.
White paint.
Brass handle.
Arin recognized it immediately.
His mother’s old bedroom door.
A voice came from beyond.
"Arin?"
His body reacted before his mind.
Elara.
Real voice.
Not recording.
"Don’t open it."
Lucan looked at him.
A-01 remained still.
Guardian Zero growled softly.
Arin approached.
Stopped one step from the door.
"Mother."
Silence.
Then a sob.
Small.
Broken.
"You’re really here."
Arin closed his eyes briefly.
Years of grief pressed against his chest.
He wanted to open the door.
He wanted to forget Seraphine.
Forget the Trial.
Forget everything.
Just see her.
That was exactly why he didn’t.
"Answer something."
The voice beyond paused.
"What?"
"On my sixth birthday, I climbed the bell tower."
A shaky laugh.
"You refused to come down."
"What did you tell Father?"
Silence.
Then:
"That you weren’t trapped."
Arin’s throat tightened.
"Continue."
"I said you were inspecting the masonry."
Lucan looked at him.
Arin almost laughed despite everything.
That sounded like her.
"What did you tell me?"
The voice softened.
"That brave people are allowed to be scared."
Arin stopped breathing for a second.
He remembered.
Exactly.
Guardian Zero moved closer to the door.
Sniffed.
Then its body stiffened.
"Two."
Arin’s warmth vanished.
The Guardian growled.
"Elara."
Then deeper.
"Administrator."
Lucan drew his sword.
A-01’s white mask activated.
Arin raised one hand.
Nobody moved.
He looked toward the door.
"Mother."
A pause.
"Yes?"
"Is Seraphine inside you?"
Silence.
Long.
Painful.
Then Elara whispered:
"Yes."
Arin’s expression became cold.
"Can she control you?"
"Sometimes."
"Right now?"
Another pause.
"No."
"Can she hear us?"
"Yes."
Good.
Arin stepped closer.
He spoke loudly enough for both of them.
"Seraphine."
Nothing.
"Listen carefully."
Elara’s breathing trembled beyond the door.
Arin continued.
"You wanted me to come down here."
A second voice answered through his mother’s mouth.
Same throat.
Different tone.
Calm.
Amused.
"You came."
Arin’s eyes hardened.
"No."
The Administrator laughed softly.
"You’re standing outside the door."
"Exactly."
Silence.
"I came to retrieve my mother."
Arin raised his sidearm.
"I never said I was entering your room."
Lucan slowly smiled.
A-01 turned toward Arin.
Guardian Zero’s claws extended.
Arin looked at the door hinges.
Then the surrounding wall.
Old-looking wood.
Probably system projection over structural alloy.
Fine.
"EVE."
The Family Link and city connection activated together.
"Founder."
"Can you locate my signal?"
"Yes."
"Mark this room."
"Marked."
"What’s directly above me?"
A pause.
"Western garden foundation."
"How much structure between?"
"Approximately eleven meters."
Seraphine’s voice came through the door.
"What are you doing?"
Arin smiled.
There it was.
Uncertainty.
"Guardian Zero."
"Yes."
"Remember when you wanted to make a hole?"
The Guardian’s silver eyes brightened.
"Yes."
Arin pointed upward.
"Now."
Lucan laughed.
A-01 stepped back.
Seraphine shouted through the door.
"ARIN—"
Guardian Zero expanded.
Its restricted body unfolded violently.
Armor plates separated.
Mass returned.
The corridor exploded.
Arin’s combat suit activated its emergency shield.
White energy wrapped around him.
Zero drove one claw upward.
Metal screamed.
Stone shattered.
Eleven meters of hidden Elysium structure ceased to matter.
Sunlight poured through the opening.
Real sunlight.
The western gardens appeared above.
Security drones circled the hole.
EVE stood at the edge.
Arin looked toward the sealed bedroom door.
"You built the corridor."
Another impact.
Guardian Zero tore the ceiling wider.
"You chose the entrance."
A third.
The entire false House Valerius wing shook.
Arin pointed upward.
"I choose the exit."
The door behind them burst open.
Elara stood there.
Dark hair threaded with silver.
Pale green eyes filled with tears.
One hand pressed against the doorframe.
The other wrapped around her own throat.
Black lines crawled beneath her skin.
Her mouth opened.
Two voices came out together.
"Run."
Arin did not.
He raised the energy sidearm.
Not at Elara.
At the black Authority Band fused around her wrist.
"Guardian."
Zero’s head snapped toward her.
"Can you hold her without hurting her?"
"Yes."
"A-01."
"Listening."
"Can you separate Administrator Authority from a living host?"
"Possibly."
"Lucan."
The older brother stepped beside him.
"Yes?"
"If anything comes through that corridor behind her, kill it."
Lucan smiled grimly.
"Finally."
Arin looked at his mother.
Then at the black veins spreading across her neck.
Seraphine laughed through Elara’s mouth.
"You think this is rescue?"
Arin’s finger settled against the trigger.
"No."
His voice became quiet.
"This is eviction."
And he fired.
