Chapter 29: Chapter 28: Evicting an Administrator

The shot crossed the corridor in a line of blue-white light.

Elara moved.

Not fast enough to dodge.

Fast enough to make Arin’s stomach twist.

Her wrist snapped sideways as if pulled by invisible strings, and the energy round struck the black Authority Band at an angle instead of dead center.

The impact detonated against the metal.

Black sparks exploded.

Elara screamed.

So did Seraphine.

Two voices tore from the same throat.

One in pain.

One in fury.

The Authority Band cracked.

Not shattered.

But cracked.

Arin’s interface flooded with warnings.

«HOSTILE ADMINISTRATOR LINK DESTABILIZED.

HOST BODY STRESS:

CRITICAL.

WARNING:

FURTHER DIRECT DAMAGE MAY INJURE ELARA ELYSIUM.»

Arin lowered the weapon immediately.

Seraphine laughed through Elara’s mouth.

"Careful."

Elara’s left hand clawed at her own wrist.

Her right slammed against the wall.

"Arin..."

Her real voice surfaced.

"Don’t let her—"

The black veins across her throat thickened.

Seraphine took control again.

Elara’s posture changed.

That was the most disturbing part.

Same body.

Same face.

Different person.

Her shoulders straightened.

Her breathing became calm.

The fear vanished from her eyes.

"You hesitate."

Arin looked at her.

"No."

"You stopped firing."

"Because I’m not stupid."

Seraphine smiled.

"Attachment."

"Information."

Arin raised the sidearm again but did not fire.

"I know the Band can be damaged."

A-01 moved to his left.

Guardian Zero crouched to his right.

Lucan covered the corridor behind Elara.

EVE watched from above through the opening Guardian Zero had torn into the gardens.

For the first time since the confrontation began, Seraphine was surrounded.

Not trapped.

Arin refused to assume that.

But surrounded.

Good enough.

"EVE," Arin said.

"Listening."

"Read the damaged Band."

Her eyes flashed.

"Attempting."

Seraphine’s smile sharpened.

"You think your little Keeper can interpret root technology?"

EVE’s voice remained perfectly calm.

"No."

Seraphine blinked.

EVE continued.

"But A-01 can."

The Termination Officer stepped forward.

White light spread across its mask.

«SCANNING ADMINISTRATOR BINDING.

HOST INTEGRATION:

63%.

EXTERNAL ROOT LINK:

29%.

PERSONAL CONSCIOUSNESS RETENTION:

8%.»

Arin’s expression hardened.

Eight percent.

Elara was barely holding herself inside her own body.

"Can we reverse it?"

A-01 paused.

«POSSIBLE.

SUCCESS PROBABILITY:

37%.»

Lucan swore.

Seraphine laughed.

"Those are poor odds."

Arin glanced toward A-01.

"What increases them?"

«REDUCE ADMINISTRATOR CONTROL.

STABILIZE HOST CONSCIOUSNESS.

SEVER EXTERNAL ROOT LINK.

PRESERVE PHYSICAL BODY.»

"Order?"

«SIMULTANEOUS EXECUTION RECOMMENDED.»

Of course.

Arin looked at everyone.

"Then we do all four."

Lucan shifted his stance.

"How?"

Arin pointed toward the black Band.

"That controls her."

"Partially," A-01 said.

"Good enough."

Then toward Guardian Zero.

"You stabilize Elara."

The Guardian’s silver eyes dimmed.

"How?"

Arin remembered the Family Link.

The first promise.

The way Lyra had forced the city to recognize EVE as family.

"Family."

Zero understood before Lucan did.

Its gaze softened.

"Elara is family."

"Exactly."

Arin looked upward.

"EVE, get Lyra."

Silence.

Then immediately:

"No."

Arin stared upward.

EVE rarely contradicted him that quickly.

"Explain."

"Young Lady Lyra is a Family Authority holder. Bringing her physically closer to a hostile Administrator creates unacceptable risk."

Arin nodded once.

"Agreed."

Lucan looked surprised.

Arin continued.

"Remote link only."

EVE paused.

"That is safer."

"Do it."

Seraphine’s smile vanished.

Interesting.

She did not like that.

Arin noticed.

"Problem?"

"No."

"Good."

He tapped his Authority Band.

"Lyra."

Her voice came instantly.

"Big Brother?"

"Need you."

"Okay."

No hesitation.

Arin’s throat tightened slightly.

"Family Link only. Don’t come here."

A pause.

"I wasn’t going to."

"You absolutely were."

"...Maybe."

Even now.

Arin almost smiled.

Then the corridor shook.

Black light erupted from Elara’s wrist.

Seraphine moved.

Guardian Zero lunged.

Everything happened at once.

The Guardian’s massive foreleg crossed the corridor and pinned Elara against the wall.

Not crushing.

Holding.

Seraphine screamed.

Black energy exploded from the Authority Band.

A-01 stepped into it.

The force hit its chest.

White armor cracked.

The Officer did not move.

«ROOT INTERFERENCE DETECTED.

COUNTER-PROTOCOL ACTIVE.»

Lucan charged.

A black shape emerged from the corridor behind Elara.

Humanoid.

Faceless.

Built from the same darkness as the Administrator’s authority.

Lucan’s sword took its head off.

The body dissolved.

Another appeared.

Then three.

Lucan smiled grimly.

"Finally, something simple."

Arin ignored him.

"Lyra!"

"I’m here!"

Her white Family Authority symbol appeared around Arin’s wrist.

Then on Guardian Zero.

Then EVE.

Then—

Elara.

The black veins on her neck stopped moving.

For one second.

Only one.

But Seraphine noticed.

"No."

Arin did too.

"Again."

Lyra’s voice hardened.

"Family Link authorization."

White light exploded across the corridor.

Elara screamed.

Seraphine screamed louder.

The two voices separated.

Arin saw it.

Not physically.

Systemically.

Two consciousness signatures appeared.

«HOST CONSCIOUSNESS:

ELARA ELYSIUM — 14%.

ADMINISTRATOR CONTROL:

57%.

EXTERNAL ROOT:

29%.»

Elara gained six percent.

Good.

Not enough.

"Keep going."

Lyra’s voice trembled slightly.

"It’s hard."

Arin’s expression changed.

"What does it feel like?"

"Cold."

That worried him.

"Stop if it hurts."

Seraphine laughed through Elara’s mouth.

"There."

Arin’s eyes narrowed.

"Attachment makes you weak."

Arin looked directly at her.

"No."

He raised the sidearm.

"It gives me limits."

Seraphine’s smile faded.

Arin pointed at the Authority Band.

"And limits make decisions easier."

He fired again.

This time A-01 moved simultaneously.

The Officer’s white spear materialized.

Not aimed at Elara.

At the black energy emerging from the Band.

The energy round struck the crack.

A-01’s spear pierced the root link.

The corridor vanished in white and black light.

Lucan was thrown backward.

Guardian Zero dug its claws into the floor.

Arin’s combat suit activated full shielding.

The world became noise.

Then—

Snap.

The sound was tiny.

Almost pathetic.

The black Authority Band split.

Elara’s wrist dropped.

The broken device remained fused to her skin, but its central ring had opened.

«ADMINISTRATOR HOST BINDING:

FAILURE.

HOST CONSCIOUSNESS:

26%.

ADMINISTRATOR CONTROL:

45%.

EXTERNAL ROOT LINK:

29%.»

Arin’s jaw tightened.

The Band had weakened her.

Not removed her.

Seraphine’s voice came from Elara’s mouth, breathless now.

"You think breaking hardware matters?"

"Apparently."

"Root authority does not need a Band."

"Then why wear one?"

Silence.

Arin smiled.

Again.

She kept giving him answers every time she became angry.

"The Band stabilizes you."

Seraphine’s expression changed.

There.

A-01 confirmed.

«ADMINISTRATOR BAND FUNCTION:

HOST SYNCHRONIZATION.

LONG-TERM ROOT ACCESS.

CONSCIOUSNESS SUPPRESSION.»

Arin looked toward EVE.

"Can we remove it?"

"Not without damaging Elara."

"Yet."

"Correct."

Guardian Zero growled softly.

"Elara hurt."

Arin looked toward his mother.

For a second, her eyes were hers again.

Pale green.

Tears streaming.

"Arin..."

"I’m here."

"Don’t..."

Seraphine tried to take control.

Elara fought.

Her body shook violently.

"Don’t... open Ark Prime."

That stopped everyone.

Even Lucan.

Arin’s eyes narrowed.

"Why?"

She gasped.

"She wants..."

Black veins climbed toward her jaw.

Guardian Zero pressed more white Family light into her.

Elara forced the words out.

"...the children."

Seraphine seized control again.

Elara’s face went blank.

Then smiled.

"This is becoming tiresome."

Arin did not answer.

Inside his head, the pieces moved.

Seraphine lost Ark access.

Ark Prime immediately designated Elara Preservation Authority.

It demanded her return.

Seraphine possessed Elara.

Therefore—

If Elara entered Ark Prime while Seraphine remained inside her...

Seraphine might bypass the restriction.

Lucan reached the same conclusion.

"She needs Elara as a key."

Arin nodded.

Seraphine’s smile vanished.

Good.

"That’s why you didn’t kill her," Arin said.

Silence.

"You needed her alive."

Still silence.

"You weren’t hiding inside my mother."

His voice hardened.

"You were wearing her."

Lucan’s expression turned murderous.

Guardian Zero’s claws cut grooves into the floor.

Lyra’s voice came through the Link.

"Big Brother?"

"Yes."

"I don’t like her."

Arin almost laughed.

"Neither do I."

Seraphine suddenly moved her hand.

Fast.

Too fast.

Black symbols appeared on the wall.

A root command.

A-01 shouted:

"FOUND—"

The corridor split.

Not physically.

Space itself folded.

Arin saw two versions of Elara.

Then four.

Then twelve.

Every one pinned beneath Guardian Zero.

Every one staring at him.

Lucan cursed.

Illusion?

Projection?

Parallel consciousness?

Arin refused to guess.

"System, identify primary host."

«ERROR.

ROOT DUPLICATION ACTIVE.»

Seraphine’s voice came from every Elara.

"Which one will you save?"

Arin went still.

The phrasing.

Cabin Zero.

Choose one.

Again.

Seraphine smiled through twelve faces.

"You never learn."

Arin lowered his sidearm.

Lucan looked sharply toward him.

"Arin?"

He ignored him.

Twelve Elara copies breathed.

Some cried.

Some smiled.

Some whispered his name.

One screamed.

One begged him to shoot.

One told him to run.

Arin looked at all twelve.

Then closed his eyes.

Lucan stared.

"This isn’t the time for—"

"Quiet."

Lucan actually obeyed.

Arin listened.

Breathing.

Footsteps.

Guardian Zero’s claws.

Lyra’s Family Link.

His mother’s voice from childhood.

Brave people are allowed to be scared.

He opened his eyes.

"Zero."

"Yes."

"Which one smells like Elara?"

The Guardian’s silver eyes moved across the copies.

One.

Two.

Three.

Then stopped.

Its head turned.

Not toward any visible Elara.

Toward the empty wall behind them.

"That one."

Seraphine’s copies froze.

Arin spun.

Fired.

The energy round struck blank metal.

The wall exploded inward.

Elara fell out.

The real Elara.

Guardian Zero had been pinning nothing but root projections.

The actual host had been moved behind the wall.

Seraphine screamed.

The twelve copies shattered.

Arin crossed the distance.

Caught his mother before she hit the ground.

For the first time, he touched her.

Real warmth.

Real weight.

Too thin.

Far too thin.

Her eyes opened.

Pale green.

"Arin."

No second voice.

Not yet.

He held her shoulders.

"Stay with me."

A faint smile.

"You got tall."

His throat tightened.

"Apparently."

Lucan approached slowly.

Elara saw him.

Her face changed.

"Lucan."

The older brother stopped.

All of his confidence disappeared.

"Mother."

One word.

That was all.

Elara reached toward him.

Lucan moved closer before he could stop himself.

Her fingers touched his cheek.

"You lived."

His eyes closed.

For one second.

Then A-01 shouted.

"ROOT LINK REACTIVATING."

Black veins exploded across Elara’s wrist.

Seraphine returned.

Her eyes became silver.

Arin caught her arm.

"No."

The Administrator smiled weakly.

"You cannot remove me without killing her."

"Maybe."

"Thirty-seven percent success."

"Old number."

A-01 scanned again.

«CURRENT SUCCESS PROBABILITY:

52%.»

Seraphine’s smile faded.

Arin looked toward Guardian Zero.

"Family Link stronger."

Then EVE.

"Band damaged."

Then A-01.

"Root access contested."

Lucan understood.

"We’ve changed the conditions."

"Exactly."

Seraphine’s face hardened.

"You still risk killing your mother."

Arin said nothing.

That was true.

Fifty-two percent was not acceptable.

He looked at the countdown.

«ARK PRIME:

17:44:12»

Seventeen hours.

They had time.

Not much.

Enough.

Arin picked Elara up.

Seraphine’s eyes widened.

"What are you doing?"

"Leaving."

"You cannot."

"Watch me."

A-01 stepped beside him.

Guardian Zero took the rear.

Lucan covered the corridor.

Seraphine tried to force Elara’s body to resist.

It failed.

Not completely.

But enough.

Arin carried his mother toward the hole Guardian Zero had created.

"You’re taking me to Ark Prime."

"No."

Seraphine’s voice became uncertain.

"Then where?"

"The infirmary."

Silence.

Lucan laughed.

Seraphine sounded genuinely confused.

"You have seventeen hours."

"I know."

"Ark Prime will awaken."

"I know."

"You need Elara."

"I have Elara."

"Then why delay?"

Arin looked down at his mother’s face.

Then toward the light pouring from the western gardens above.

"Because I’m not opening anything while you’re inside her."

Seraphine’s expression turned furious.

"Arin—"

"No."

His voice cut through hers.

"For once, you wait."

Guardian Zero climbed first.

A-01 followed.

Lucan moved behind Arin.

The false corridor began collapsing.

Root symbols failed.

Walls dissolved.

Seraphine tried one final command.

«ADMINISTRATOR ORDER:

RETURN PRESERVATION AUTHORITY TO ROOT FACILITY.»

The System processed.

Then:

«DENIED.

ACTIVE FOUNDER HAS CUSTODY.

FAMILY PROTECTION ACTIVE.»

Arin kept walking.

Seraphine went silent.

That silence felt better than victory.

---

They reached the western gardens eight minutes later.

EVE was waiting.

So was Serena.

Lyra was not.

Good.

Arin had told her to stay inside.

Serena saw Elara.

The color drained from her face.

"Elara."

Arin lowered his mother onto the medical platform.

Serena limped forward.

Her hand hovered over Elara’s face but did not touch.

"You’re alive."

Elara’s eyes opened.

For one fragile second, they remained green.

"Serena."

The older knight broke.

No dramatic collapse.

No scream.

She simply covered her mouth and cried.

EVE activated the medical platform.

Blue light surrounded Elara.

«PATIENT STATUS:

CRITICAL BUT STABLE.

FOREIGN CONSCIOUSNESS:

ACTIVE.

REMOVAL PROCEDURE:

POSSIBLE.

REQUIREMENTS:

MEDICAL FACILITY LEVEL 2.

FAMILY AUTHORITY HOLDER.

ROOT INTERFACE.

PRESERVATION STABILIZER.»

Arin read the list.

Medical Facility Level 2.

They only had the basic infirmary.

"How long to upgrade?"

EVE answered.

"Under normal conditions, four days."

"Not normal."

"With Central Workshop access, six hours."

The workshop remained isolated.

Sublevel Nine remained compromised.

Arin’s expression hardened.

Of course.

Seraphine had built the problem perfectly.

Open the workshop and risk root infection.

Keep it sealed and lose the medical upgrade.

Lucan saw the dilemma.

"We reopen one production line."

Arin looked toward him.

"Isolated connection."

"Exactly."

EVE processed.

"Possible."

"Risk?"

"Administrator intrusion probability: 34%."

Too high.

Arin looked at A-01.

"Can you firewall the line?"

"Partially."

"Probability after?"

"Eleven percent."

Better.

Not good.

But better.

Arin nodded.

"Do it."

Seraphine’s voice came weakly from Elara.

"You finally take risks."

Arin looked down at her.

"I always did."

He touched the cracked black Band.

"I just prefer choosing them."

The medical platform sealed.

EVE began moving it toward the infirmary.

Arin turned toward the city map.

"Reopen Fabrication Line Zero-One only."

«CONFIRM PARTIAL WORKSHOP RECONNECTION?»

"Confirmed."

The Central Workshop flickered back to life.

One line.

One path.

Nothing more.

A warning immediately appeared.

«EXTERNAL ROOT SIGNAL DETECTED.

ATTEMPTING ENTRY.»

Arin smiled faintly.

Seraphine had taken the bait.

"A-01."

"Ready."

"EVE."

"Ready."

"Cut it when I say."

Lucan frowned.

"You planned this?"

Arin looked toward the signal.

"No."

Then toward the isolated network.

"But she keeps doing exactly what I expect."

The root signal pushed deeper.

Five percent.

Ten.

Fifteen.

A-01 mapped it.

Not just the intrusion.

The origin.

A location appeared.

Deep beneath the western mountain.

Black marker.

«ROOT RELAY NODE IDENTIFIED.»

Arin’s eyes sharpened.

There.

Seraphine’s external connection.

Not the whole root system.

But one relay.

Enough.

"Now."

EVE severed the line.

A-01 trapped the intrusion trace.

The workshop went dark again except Fabrication Line Zero-One.

The root signal vanished.

Lucan stared at the map.

"You baited her into revealing a relay."

Arin looked toward him.

"She likes control."

"Apparently."

Arin marked the node.

"Later."

First, his mother.

Then Ark Prime.

Then Seraphine.

In that order.

A final System notification appeared.

«MEDICAL FACILITY LEVEL 2 UPGRADE:

MATERIALS AVAILABLE.

CONSTRUCTION TIME:

05:47:33.»

Arin looked at the Ark countdown.

«17:29:51.»

Enough.

For once.

He had enough time.

Then Lyra’s voice came from the mansion.

"Big Brother?"

Arin activated the link.

"Yes?"

"There’s someone at the front gate."

His expression changed.

"Who?"

"I don’t know."

EVE’s security feed opened automatically.

The main gate of House Elysium appeared.

One person stood outside.

Alone.

An old man wearing a rain-darkened cloak.

Silver hair.

A scar across one eye.

Arin knew him.

Sir Roland.

Commander of House Valerius’s hunters.

The man who had once turned away from the hidden valley because he believed Arin had found somewhere safer than home.

Roland stood before the sealed gate holding a bloodstained letter.

He looked directly toward the security lens.

"Young Master."

His voice sounded exhausted.

"I know you can hear me."

He raised the letter.

"The Duke has fallen."

Arin went completely still.

Roland continued.

"House Valerius is under attack."

Then he lowered his head.

"And your father is asking for you."
