AFTER BEING EXILED: MY SISTER AND I BUILD HIDDEN CIVILIZATIONS
Chapter 33 - 32: The Trap Was Mine
Chapter 33: Chapter 32: The Trap Was Mine
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Lucan’s knife rested against Grandmaster Vaelor’s throat.
The steel did not tremble.
Neither did Lucan’s hand.
Around them, the Coalition command camp had frozen into a perfect picture of disbelief.
Officers stared.
Hunters gripped weapons they suddenly seemed uncertain about using.
Two destroyed siege engines still smoked near the eastern line, their main support joints cut cleanly through by weapons nobody in the camp could identify.
And above all of it, Arin’s voice continued to flow through every dead communication crystal.
Calm.
Measured.
Unhurried.
"Do not move."
Vaelor’s eyes narrowed.
He was an S-Rank Hunter.
Everyone in the kingdom knew what that meant.
A man like him could tear through ordinary soldiers.
Break fortress gates.
Kill high-ranking monsters alone.
Yet Lucan stood directly behind him with a blade at his throat as though none of that mattered.
"Lucan," Vaelor said quietly.
Lucan smiled.
"Grandmaster."
"I wondered which side you would choose."
"I haven’t chosen a side."
His knife pressed a fraction deeper.
"I chose the one least annoying today."
Vaelor did not react.
"Then you have become careless."
"No."
Lucan’s eyes sharpened.
"You have."
A pulse of mana exploded from Vaelor.
The air buckled.
Three nearby tables shattered.
Coalition officers were thrown backward.
Lucan disappeared beneath the pressure.
At least, that was what Vaelor expected.
Instead, a gray shimmer covered Lucan’s body.
The Founder fragment burned across his palm.
The mana wave bent around him.
Not completely.
Blood appeared at the corner of Lucan’s mouth.
But he remained standing.
His knife remained exactly where it had been.
Vaelor’s expression finally changed.
Lucan leaned closer.
"That one hurt."
Then he drove his knee into the back of Vaelor’s leg.
The Grandmaster stumbled.
Not much.
Enough.
The knife vanished.
Lucan stepped backward.
At the same instant, an invisible round crossed the camp.
Vaelor twisted.
Blue light struck the ground where his head had been.
Soil vaporized.
Silence.
Vaelor slowly turned toward the dark ridge beyond camp.
Arin remained invisible.
Good.
The Grandmaster had instincts.
Better than Arin had expected.
That made him dangerous.
Not unbeatable.
Just dangerous.
A new scan appeared across Arin’s visor.
«TARGET: GRANDMASTER VAELOR
MANA OUTPUT:
EXTREME
CURRENT STATE:
SUPPRESSED
ESTIMATED COMBAT CAPABILITY:
82%
UNKNOWN ABILITY DETECTED»
Arin frowned.
Suppressed.
Vaelor had not arrived at full strength.
Why?
He watched carefully.
Vaelor raised one hand.
"All units."
Nobody responded.
The communication system belonged to Arin now.
Vaelor looked toward the nearest officer.
"Signal manually."
The man hesitated.
Then reached for a flare.
A blue shot crossed the camp.
The flare shattered in his hand.
He screamed.
Not injured.
Startled.
Arin’s voice came through again.
"I said don’t move."
The entire camp went still once more.
Vaelor looked toward the darkness.
"So the rumors were true."
Arin said nothing.
Vaelor continued.
"The classless heir found an ancient inheritance."
Inside the Valerius estate, dozens of nobles listened through restored Guild crystals.
Duke Aldric stood in the eastern command hall.
Roland beside him.
Theron several steps away.
No one spoke.
They could hear every word.
Arin knew that.
He had arranged it deliberately.
Vaelor raised his voice.
"Arin Valerius."
No answer.
"Show yourself."
Still nothing.
The Grandmaster smiled.
"Or are you only brave while hiding?"
Inside the estate, several nobles shifted.
Roland’s expression darkened.
Theron smiled faintly.
There it was.
The old accusation.
Coward.
Weak.
Classless.
Arin watched Vaelor through his scope.
Then disabled optical concealment.
The forest ridge shimmered.
A black figure appeared beneath the moonlight.
Arin stood alone.
No army behind him.
No grand banner.
No escort.
Black armor covered his body.
A compact weapon rested in one hand.
Behind him stood the Phantom-01.
Blue lines glowed faintly across its frame.
Hundreds of people in the Coalition camp stared.
Someone whispered:
"What is he wearing?"
Another:
"That’s not armor."
"It has no mana."
Vaelor’s smile slowly disappeared.
Arin stepped down the slope.
One step.
Then another.
The camp remained silent.
He walked toward four thousand soldiers alone.
Lucan watched from beside the command tent.
His expression changed slightly.
He knew what Arin was doing.
This wasn’t reckless.
Arin had already mapped every Hunter within five hundred meters.
Recon drones watched the archers.
The portable sensor node monitored mana fluctuations.
Phantom-01 remained ready for extraction.
Three retreat routes were marked.
The soldiers only saw one young man approaching.
Arin saw the entire battlefield.
He stopped fifty meters from Vaelor.
The Grandmaster looked him over.
"Interesting."
Arin said nothing.
Vaelor continued.
"You’ve grown confident."
"No."
Arin’s voice carried naturally now.
The communication crystals repeated it across the camp.
"I’ve grown informed."
Vaelor’s eyes narrowed.
"About what?"
Arin looked around.
"Your siege engines."
One had already collapsed.
"Your relay system."
Dead.
"Your prisoner camp."
Empty.
"Your supply routes."
The northern depot continued burning.
Then Arin looked directly at him.
"And you."
Vaelor smiled again.
"Do you believe knowing my name makes you dangerous?"
"No."
Arin tilted his head slightly.
"Knowing why your mana core is damaged does."
The smile vanished.
Lucan’s eyes widened.
Inside the estate, Roland looked sharply toward the communication crystal.
Vaelor’s expression became completely still.
Arin had guessed.
Mostly.
The sensor scan showed irregular mana flow near Vaelor’s chest.
Old damage.
Possibly curse-related.
The Grandmaster’s reaction confirmed the rest.
Good.
Arin continued.
"Left side."
Vaelor said nothing.
"The channels near your heart aren’t distributing mana correctly."
Still silence.
"When you released pressure against Lucan, output dropped twelve percent."
Lucan looked almost offended.
"You were measuring me too?"
Arin ignored him.
Vaelor’s gaze became colder.
"Impressive device."
"Thank you."
"You depend heavily on it."
Arin almost smiled.
There it was.
The assumption.
Technology equals weakness without technology.
Good.
"Maybe."
Vaelor looked toward the officers behind him.
Confidence began returning.
"You stand inside my army."
Arin looked around.
"No."
He pointed toward the surrounding camp.
"Your army stands inside my sensor field."
The Grandmaster froze.
A soft chime echoed.
Dozens of tiny blue lights appeared around the camp.
On trees.
Under wagons.
Beside tents.
Near supply crates.
Portable sensor nodes.
Arin had placed them while rescuing the prisoners.
Vaelor slowly looked around.
"What are those?"
"Insurance."
Several Hunters moved instinctively.
Arin raised one finger.
"Careful."
They stopped.
The nodes were not explosives.
They didn’t know that.
Arin had no intention of explaining.
Vaelor’s eyes narrowed.
"You bluff well."
Arin looked toward Lucan.
"Do I?"
Lucan smiled.
"Unfortunately, no."
The Coalition soldiers became less comfortable.
Good.
Arin walked forward again.
Forty meters.
Thirty.
Vaelor remained where he was.
"You’ve caused enough disruption."
"Not yet."
"What do you want?"
Arin stopped.
Finally.
The correct question.
"Release every civilian detained by Coalition forces."
Vaelor’s expression did not change.
"Already rescued, apparently."
"All of them."
"Some are suspected combat collaborators."
"Evidence?"
"This is a military operation."
"Evidence?"
Vaelor stared.
Arin waited.
No answer.
"Release them."
The Grandmaster laughed.
"You give commands easily for a disgraced noble."
Arin’s expression cooled.
"I am not a noble."
Inside the estate, Duke Aldric flinched almost imperceptibly.
Arin continued.
"I don’t hold Valerius rank."
His eyes moved across the Coalition banners.
"I don’t recognize your noble dispute."
Then to the Royal Guild crest.
"And I’m not a member of your Guild."
His gaze returned to Vaelor.
"So you have nothing I want."
Silence.
"That makes negotiation difficult for you."
Vaelor’s smile disappeared.
Lucan looked delighted.
Arin continued.
"Second condition."
"You’re assuming I accepted the first."
"You will."
Mana began gathering around Vaelor.
Arin saw it immediately.
«TARGET OUTPUT RISING.
84%
87%»
Arin did not step backward.
"Second condition."
His voice remained even.
"Coalition siege operations stop immediately."
Vaelor’s mana increased.
"Third."
Arin looked toward the estate.
"All forces withdraw five kilometers from civilian population centers."
Several Coalition officers reacted.
One shouted:
"Impossible!"
Arin turned his head slightly.
"Then you can stay."
The officer laughed.
"Against what? You?"
Arin looked at him.
"No."
A low mechanical hum began behind the camp.
Everyone turned.
The Phantom-01 wasn’t there.
Something else moved in the darkness.
Two recon drones descended.
Small.
Unimpressive.
Then their lights projected an image into the sky.
A map.
Coalition positions.
Every tent.
Every officer.
Every supply wagon.
Every Hunter rank.
Every route.
The camp saw itself completely exposed.
Arin looked toward the officer.
"Against the fact that I know where everything is."
The man stopped laughing.
Vaelor raised one hand.
"Enough."
Mana exploded around him.
This time deliberately.
The ground cracked.
A golden aura wrapped his body.
Hunters nearby retreated instinctively.
«TARGET OUTPUT:
96%.»
Lucan drew his knife.
Arin did not move.
Vaelor stepped forward.
"Do you know what S-Rank means, child?"
Arin considered.
"Officially or practically?"
The Grandmaster’s eyes hardened.
"It means kingdoms compromise."
Another step.
"Armies withdraw."
Another.
"Guilds negotiate."
He stopped twenty meters from Arin.
"It means one person can become a national threat."
Arin nodded.
"I know."
Vaelor smiled.
"Then why are you still standing there?"
Arin looked at the Grandmaster’s feet.
Then behind him.
Then upward.
"Because you entered the wrong range."
Vaelor frowned.
Arin lifted his hand.
Phantom-01 appeared behind him in blue light.
Not enough.
Vaelor laughed.
"A motorcycle?"
Arin didn’t answer.
The bike’s side panels opened.
Two compact devices launched.
They hit the ground on either side of Vaelor.
A transparent field appeared.
The Grandmaster’s expression changed.
His mana flickered.
Then collapsed inward.
Not gone.
Compressed.
«NONLETHAL SHIELD EMITTER:
CONTAINMENT ACTIVE.
TARGET MANA DISRUPTION:
31%.»
Vaelor’s eyes widened.
"What—"
Arin fired.
One shot.
The energy round struck Vaelor’s right knee.
His defensive aura absorbed most of it.
Most.
The Grandmaster dropped to one knee.
The entire Coalition army stopped breathing.
Inside House Valerius, a noble dropped his wine cup.
Arin lowered the weapon.
Vaelor stared up.
Disbelief.
Not fear.
Not yet.
Perfect.
Arin stepped closer.
"That."
His voice remained calm.
"Is what S-Rank means to you."
He pointed the sidearm at Vaelor’s chest.
"This is what preparation means to me."
Vaelor roared.
Mana erupted.
The containment field cracked.
Arin expected it.
He stepped backward.
Vaelor exploded through the barrier.
Fast.
Too fast for ordinary eyes.
His fist crossed the distance.
Arin’s suit screamed warnings.
The emergency shield activated.
Vaelor’s punch hit.
The world vanished.
Arin flew backward.
He struck the ground.
Rolled.
The combat suit absorbed most of the impact.
Not all.
Pain exploded through his ribs.
«SHIELD CAPACITY:
43%.»
Good.
Data.
Vaelor charged again.
Arin raised his weapon.
Vaelor swatted it aside.
The sidearm spun away.
A second punch came.
Arin ducked.
Barely.
The fist passed over his head.
Arin drove the multi-tool into Vaelor’s damaged left mana channel.
Not a blade.
A shock discharge.
Vaelor’s body convulsed.
Arin stepped away.
The Grandmaster turned.
Furious now.
"You—"
Lucan appeared behind him.
Knife entered Vaelor’s shoulder.
The Grandmaster spun.
Lucan released the blade and vanished backward.
Vaelor tore it free.
Blood ran down his armor.
Four thousand soldiers watched.
Nobody moved.
Nobody dared.
Vaelor screamed:
"KILL THEM!"
The Coalition commanders reacted.
Finally.
Archers raised bows.
Mages formed spells.
Hunters charged.
Arin tapped his wrist.
Every communication crystal activated.
A new voice filled the camp.
Not Arin.
A woman’s.
Official.
Cold.
"This is Royal Inspector Selene Marr."
Vaelor froze.
The Coalition soldiers stopped.
Arin smiled faintly.
Lucan’s eyes widened.
He hadn’t known about this.
Neither had Vaelor.
The gold-robed Guild representative inside House Valerius had contacted the Crown after realizing Vaelor’s assault had not been authorized.
EVE had intercepted the response.
Arin simply redirected it.
The Inspector continued.
"Grandmaster Vaelor is ordered to cease operations immediately pending investigation into unauthorized deployment of Royal Guild personnel."
Silence.
Vaelor’s face went pale.
The voice continued.
"Any Guild Hunter obeying further offensive commands from Grandmaster Vaelor will be considered in violation of Crown mandate."
Half the Royal Guild soldiers lowered their weapons instantly.
Coalition nobles shouted.
Confusion spread.
Arin looked at Vaelor.
"There."
His breathing hurt.
He ignored it.
"Your army just became smaller."
Vaelor’s eyes burned.
"You planned this."
"Some of it."
"You couldn’t have known the Inspector would respond."
"No."
Arin looked toward the Guild soldiers stepping away.
"So I prepared alternatives."
Vaelor stared.
That was when real uncertainty finally appeared.
Arin stepped forward despite the pain in his ribs.
"Grandmaster."
Vaelor looked at him.
"Three conditions."
Arin held up one finger.
"Civilians released."
Second.
"Siege ends."
Third.
"Five kilometers."
Vaelor’s jaw tightened.
"And if I refuse?"
Arin looked toward the Coalition camps.
Then toward House Valerius.
Then back at him.
"I remove your communication advantage."
Already done.
"Your Guild legitimacy."
Done.
"Your prisoners."
Done.
"Your siege capability."
Mostly done.
"And after that..."
Arin’s eyes hardened.
"...I start removing officers."
Vaelor stared.
Arin lowered his voice.
"One at a time."
That sentence traveled through every communication crystal.
Inside the estate, the nobles stopped smiling.
Even Theron looked unsettled.
This was not the Arin who had walked out of the Grand Hall in silence.
Vaelor slowly straightened.
Blood ran down his arm.
"You think you’ve won."
"No."
Arin looked around.
"I think I’ve negotiated."
Lucan nearly laughed.
Vaelor looked toward the Coalition commanders.
Several were already backing away.
The Royal Guild contingent had split.
Without Vaelor’s authority, the alliance was fragile.
Then a horn sounded.
Not Coalition.
Valerius.
The main estate gate opened.
Duke Aldric walked out.
Roland beside him.
Dozens of Valerius Hunters followed.
Arin’s expression changed.
Very slightly.
His father crossed the battlefield slowly.
No armor.
Only a dark coat and sword at his waist.
Coalition soldiers watched him.
Vaelor watched him.
Arin watched him.
Aldric stopped twenty meters away.
His eyes moved over Arin’s armor.
The Phantom-01.
The drones.
The wounded Grandmaster.
Then Arin himself.
For the first time in Arin’s life, his father looked at him without disappointment.
He looked at him like a stranger.
"Arin."
Arin said nothing.
Aldric’s jaw tightened.
"I asked you to return."
"I heard."
"You refused."
"Correct."
The surrounding battlefield became painfully quiet.
Aldric looked toward Vaelor.
Then the damaged siege lines.
"You did this?"
"Some of it."
Lucan smiled nearby.
Aldric’s gaze moved toward him.
The Duke froze.
Every trace of control vanished.
"Lucan."
The older brother looked back.
"Father."
One word.
It hit harder than any weapon.
Aldric took one step.
Lucan raised a knife.
"Don’t."
The Duke stopped.
Pain flashed across his face.
Arin watched.
He felt nothing satisfying about it.
Not yet.
Too many questions remained.
Aldric looked between both sons.
Then toward Arin.
"Your mother..."
"Alive."
The Duke closed his eyes.
Relief.
Real.
Arin noticed.
Good.
Another piece of evidence.
Not forgiveness.
Evidence.
"Where?"
"Safe."
Aldric opened his eyes.
"I need to see her."
"No."
The answer came immediately.
Aldric stared.
Arin continued.
"You don’t get to make requests yet."
Roland looked away.
Lucan’s expression became almost impressed.
The Duke’s face hardened by habit.
"You forget who you’re speaking to."
Arin’s eyes cooled.
"No."
He stepped closer.
"That’s exactly what I’m remembering."
Silence.
Aldric’s authority had controlled rooms for decades.
Nobles feared him.
Hunters obeyed him.
Servants lowered their heads.
Arin didn’t.
Not anymore.
"Thirty thousand people are behind those walls," Arin said.
Aldric’s expression changed slightly.
"Your family is divided."
Theron stiffened at the estate gate.
"Royal Guild authority has been compromised."
Vaelor’s jaw tightened.
"Coalition command is unstable."
Arin looked at all of them.
"So here’s what happens next."
Nobody interrupted.
Interesting.
"All civilians move away from the eastern and western wall districts."
Roland nodded immediately.
"All wounded, regardless of faction, receive treatment."
Vaelor stared.
Arin ignored him.
"Coalition troops withdraw five kilometers before midnight."
One noble commander shouted:
"You have no authority over—"
Arin turned.
Just looked at him.
The man stopped.
Good.
"Anyone who stays inside the civilian exclusion zone after midnight is volunteering to be treated as hostile."
The noble swallowed.
Arin looked toward Aldric.
"You maintain order inside the estate."
The Duke’s eyebrows rose.
Arin continued.
"Roland controls evacuation."
Roland nodded.
"Theron."
His uncle stiffened.
Arin’s expression became cold.
"You don’t leave."
Theron’s face changed.
"Excuse me?"
Lucan smiled.
Arin looked at him.
"You were expecting Vaelor."
Theron went pale.
Aldric slowly turned toward his brother.
The surrounding nobles reacted.
Vaelor’s expression sharpened.
Arin continued.
"The eastern gate guards changed rotation six hours before the Coalition arrived."
Theron said nothing.
"The Guild knew the western wall’s repair schedule."
Silence.
"The Coalition knew where the estate vault was."
Aldric’s face became murderous.
Theron stepped backward.
"You have no proof."
Arin tapped his wrist.
One recon drone descended.
It projected a captured image.
Theron standing near the estate wall.
Three nights earlier.
Speaking with a cloaked figure.
The figure removed his hood.
Grandmaster Vaelor.
The battlefield exploded in whispers.
Theron’s face drained.
Vaelor closed his eyes.
Lucan laughed.
Arin looked toward his uncle.
"There’s your proof."
Theron turned.
Ran.
He made it four steps.
A blue line crossed the ground before him.
Arin had fired deliberately wide.
Theron stopped.
Arin lowered the sidearm.
"Don’t."
His uncle slowly turned.
Fear now.
Good.
Not because Arin enjoyed it.
Because fear made people predictable.
"Roland."
"Yes?"
"Detain him."
Valerius guards moved.
Theron shouted.
"You classless bastard!"
Everything stopped.
The insult hung in the air.
The same insult.
The same contempt.
Arin looked at him.
Then at the thousands surrounding them.
Nobles.
Guild Hunters.
Soldiers.
Servants watching from the walls.
His father.
His old family.
People who remembered the Awakening Ceremony.
People who had laughed.
Arin smiled faintly.
"Classless."
He looked down at his black armor.
Then toward the broken siege engines.
The wounded S-Rank Grandmaster.
The captured traitor.
The drones circling overhead.
Then back at Theron.
"You’re right."
Silence.
"I still don’t have a Class."
That seemed to confuse everyone more than denial would have.
Arin continued.
"And yet..."
His gaze swept across the battlefield.
"...you still needed an entire coalition to feel safe after I left."
Nobody laughed.
Not one person.
Arin turned away.
"Take him."
Roland’s men seized Theron.
Aldric stared at Arin’s back.
The Duke looked as though he wanted to speak.
Arin stopped.
Not because of him.
Because his System had activated.
«CIVILIAN CRISIS:
TEMPORARILY STABILIZED.
HOUSE VALERIUS CONFLICT:
DE-ESCALATING.
NEW SIGNAL DETECTED.»
Arin frowned.
Not Elysium.
Not Lucan.
Something beneath the estate.
The map shifted.
A silver-tree symbol appeared below the ancestral hall.
Elara’s hidden access core.
Then another symbol appeared beside it.
Black.
Seraphine.
Arin’s blood went cold.
A message followed.
«ROOT RELAY CONNECTION ESTABLISHED.
LOCATION:
VALERIUS VAULT.»
Arin turned toward the estate.
Too late.
A column of black light erupted from beneath the manor.
The ground shook.
Windows shattered.
People screamed.
Aldric spun.
"What was that?"
Arin’s Authority Band flashed violently.
«WARNING.
ELYSIUM ACCESS CORE ACTIVATED.
UNAUTHORIZED ROOT CONNECTION OPENING.»
Lucan’s face went pale.
"Vaelor."
Arin turned toward the Grandmaster.
Vaelor was smiling.
Blood covered his mouth.
But he was smiling.
"You thought the siege was for you."
Arin’s expression hardened.
Vaelor laughed.
"No, Founder."
The earth beneath House Valerius split.
Black light tore through the ancestral hall.
"Your return was only the key."
And somewhere beneath Arin’s childhood home, a door that had remained sealed for generations began to open.
