Chapter 34: Chapter 33: The Door Beneath Valerius

The ground beneath House Valerius split open with a sound like the earth itself had been struck by a hammer.

Black light surged from the ancestral hall.

Not mana.

Not anything the gathered Hunters recognized.

The Coalition soldiers closest to the estate stumbled backward. Several dropped their weapons. Horses screamed and pulled against their reins. The air around the manor distorted as if the entire property had suddenly become submerged beneath invisible water.

Arin did not move.

His visor filled with warnings.

«ELYSIUM ACCESS CORE:

ACTIVE.

ROOT RELAY:

CONNECTED.

AUTHORITY SOURCE:

UNREGISTERED.

SECONDARY SIGNATURE:

SERAPHINE ELYSIUM.»

So she had found another route.

Of course she had.

Lucan appeared beside him.

"That’s not possible."

Arin looked toward him.

"You’ve said that enough times for it to lose meaning."

Lucan ignored the comment.

"The relay beneath the estate shouldn’t have been able to activate without direct Founder authorization."

"It didn’t."

Arin looked toward Vaelor.

The Grandmaster remained on one knee, blood dripping from his shoulder, but the smile on his face had not disappeared.

"You used something else."

Vaelor’s eyes shifted toward the ancestral hall.

"Not something."

Arin’s expression hardened.

"Someone."

Vaelor laughed softly.

"Much better."

Duke Aldric stepped forward.

"Explain."

Vaelor looked at him.

"I don’t answer to you anymore."

Aldric’s mana flared.

Arin raised one hand.

"No."

His father turned.

Arin’s gaze remained on Vaelor.

"He’s useful while he’s talking."

Aldric’s jaw tightened.

For a moment, old habit returned to his face.

The expectation that Arin should move aside.

Then he looked at the broken siege engines.

The split Coalition command.

Lucan standing beside Arin.

And the black armor that had just put an S-Rank Grandmaster on his knee.

The Duke said nothing.

Good.

Arin looked back toward Vaelor.

"Who activated the core?"

The Grandmaster’s smile deepened.

"You already know."

"I know Seraphine connected to it."

"Then why ask?"

"Because I want to know who opened the door from this side."

That made Vaelor pause.

Tiny.

But visible.

Arin saw it.

So did Lucan.

Lucan slowly turned toward the estate.

"Someone inside."

Roland’s expression darkened.

Aldric looked toward the ancestral hall.

"Impossible."

Arin’s eyes narrowed.

"Stop using that word."

The Duke looked at him.

Arin continued.

"You had Hollow Crown infiltrators in this house before Lucan disappeared."

Aldric’s face changed.

"You know."

"Enough."

Arin pointed toward the black column.

"That thing was activated while almost every major faction was outside watching us."

Roland understood.

"A distraction."

"Exactly."

Arin turned toward the estate guards.

"Seal every exit."

Theron, still restrained nearby, laughed.

Everyone looked toward him.

The man’s face had lost most of its earlier confidence, but something ugly remained.

"Too late."

Aldric turned.

"What did you do?"

Theron smiled at his brother.

"I did what you never had the courage to do."

Roland drew his sword.

Arin did not.

"Keep talking."

Theron looked toward him.

Hatred sharpened his face.

"You."

"Yes."

"You were supposed to remain useless."

Arin almost smiled.

"Poor planning."

Theron’s expression twisted.

"Do you have any idea what your existence cost this family?"

Aldric moved.

Arin stopped him again.

"No."

The Duke looked furious.

Arin did not care.

Theron was angry.

Angry people volunteered information.

"Continue."

Theron laughed.

"You think you’re clever."

"I think you’re emotional."

Lucan made a small approving sound.

Arin ignored him.

Theron struggled against the guards.

"Your mother brought this curse into our house."

Aldric’s face went cold.

"Enough."

"No."

Arin looked at his father.

"Let him speak."

Aldric stared at him.

For perhaps the first time in Arin’s life, Arin saw his father forced to accept that the room no longer belonged to him.

Theron continued.

"Elara was never what she claimed."

"She never claimed much," Roland said.

Theron ignored him.

"She came from nowhere. No proper lineage. No family history beyond forged records."

Lucan’s expression hardened.

Arin remained still.

"Then what?"

"Then Aldric married her."

Theron looked toward his brother.

"Because he loved her."

The word sounded like an insult.

Aldric’s jaw tightened.

Theron laughed.

"The great Duke Valerius. The man who judged every alliance by bloodline and utility."

His eyes moved toward Arin.

"And he married a woman whose past he couldn’t verify."

Arin looked at his father.

Aldric did not deny it.

Interesting.

Theron continued.

"Then Lucan was born."

Lucan went very still.

"And strange people started appearing."

Arin’s gaze sharpened.

"Who?"

"Guild appraisers. old priests. relic collectors. people who asked questions about bloodlines no one had heard in generations."

Aldric looked at Theron.

"You knew about this?"

"I knew more than you."

"Because you were working with them."

Theron smiled.

"Eventually."

There.

A confession.

Not complete.

Enough.

Arin looked toward Roland.

"Record everything."

Roland blinked.

"How?"

One recon drone descended beside him.

Its lens activated.

Arin looked back at Theron.

"Continue."

Theron’s confidence slipped slightly.

Good.

"They told me House Valerius had inherited something greater than mana."

Lucan looked at his scarred palm.

Theron saw it.

His face changed.

"You."

Lucan smiled without warmth.

"Surprise."

Theron looked horrified.

"They said you died."

"Everyone keeps saying that."

Theron’s breathing quickened.

That wasn’t useful.

Arin stepped closer.

"Who opened the vault?"

Theron looked at him.

Silence.

Arin lowered his voice.

"You already lost."

Theron’s eyes narrowed.

"The Coalition failed to take the estate."

A glance toward Vaelor.

"Vaelor lost Royal Guild legitimacy."

Another.

"Lucan is alive."

Another.

"You’ve confessed to working with whoever infiltrated this house."

Arin stopped close enough that Theron could see his own reflection in the black plates of the combat suit.

"So the only thing you still control is whether the next few minutes are useful."

Theron swallowed.

Then smiled again.

"You’re wrong."

"About?"

"The Coalition wasn’t supposed to win."

Arin’s expression changed slightly.

Theron looked toward Vaelor.

"Neither was he."

Vaelor’s smile vanished.

That was interesting.

Grandmaster Vaelor turned sharply.

"What did you say?"

Theron laughed.

"You really thought you were part of the Inner Circle?"

Vaelor’s mana spiked.

Lucan stepped between them.

"Careful."

Theron continued.

"You were bait."

Vaelor’s face transformed.

Rage.

Real.

Arin watched.

Another piece.

"Who is above Vaelor?" Arin asked.

Theron looked toward him.

"Someone you’ll meet soon."

The ground shook again.

The ancestral hall roof collapsed inward.

Black light burst higher.

The estate barrier flickered.

Arin’s System screamed.

«ROOT GATE:

42% OPEN.

FOREIGN TRANSIT SIGNATURE DETECTED.»

Lucan’s face went pale.

"Transit."

Arin looked toward him.

"Meaning?"

"Something is coming through."

There was no hesitation now.

Arin turned.

"Roland."

"Yes."

"Evacuate civilians from the ancestral district."

"Already moving."

Good.

"Aldric."

The Duke looked at him.

For one second, neither spoke.

Arin made the decision.

"Take command of the inner defenses."

Aldric’s eyes narrowed.

Not at the order.

At being ordered.

Arin didn’t soften it.

"If something comes through that gate, I want every civilian two districts away."

Aldric stared.

Then nodded.

"I’ll handle it."

Good.

No argument.

Progress.

"Vaelor."

The Grandmaster looked toward Arin.

His expression was murderous.

"You’re helping."

Vaelor laughed.

"You think you can command me?"

"No."

Arin pointed toward the gate.

"I think whoever used you as bait is about to come through."

Vaelor’s smile disappeared.

"Help or don’t."

Arin turned away.

"But if you attack me while I’m dealing with them, Lucan kills you."

Lucan looked delighted.

"Gladly."

Vaelor stared at both.

Then slowly stood.

"I hate this family."

Lyra would probably like him for that sentence alone.

Arin looked toward the estate.

"Phantom."

The motorcycle materialized.

Aldric stared.

Theron stopped breathing.

Several nobles whispered.

Arin mounted.

Lucan stepped closer.

"Where are you going?"

"Ancestral hall."

"You’re not going alone."

Arin looked at him.

"Then keep up."

Lucan stared at the rear seat.

"No."

Arin started the engine.

Lucan got on.

Vaelor looked offended.

"Are you leaving me?"

Arin glanced back.

"You can fly."

The Grandmaster’s eye twitched.

Lucan laughed.

Phantom-01 launched forward.

---

The ancestral district was chaos.

Servants ran south.

Valerius soldiers carried wounded civilians away from the collapsed structures.

Mana lamps flickered.

The estate’s ancient defensive enchantments failed one after another as black energy spread through the foundations.

Arin’s map displayed the access core below.

The gate was not inside the ancestral hall.

It was beneath it.

Much deeper than any official Valerius vault.

"How did nobody find this?" Lucan shouted over the engine.

"People are remarkably bad at looking beneath places they assume they understand."

"That sounded personal."

"It was."

The Phantom stopped before the ruins.

Arin dismounted.

Lucan followed.

Vaelor landed behind them in a burst of mana.

He was bleeding.

Still dangerous.

Aldric arrived seconds later with Roland and twenty elite Valerius Hunters.

Arin looked at his father.

"I told you inner defenses."

"I delegated."

Arin stared.

Aldric raised an eyebrow.

"You taught me."

Lucan made a choking sound.

Arin decided not to acknowledge that.

A black staircase had appeared beneath the ruined floor.

Not Valerius stone.

Elysium metal.

Arin looked at it.

His old home had literally been built over an Elysium structure.

"Mother hid this?"

Aldric stepped beside him.

"She told me there was something beneath the estate."

Arin turned sharply.

"You knew."

"Not what."

"And you didn’t investigate?"

"I tried."

The Duke looked toward the black metal.

"Nothing opened."

"Did you tell anyone?"

"No."

"Good."

Aldric’s mouth tightened at the praise.

Arin almost found that satisfying.

Almost.

They descended.

---

The vault beneath House Valerius had two layers.

The first was exactly what nobles expected.

Gold.

Artifacts.

Weapon racks.

Documents.

Family seals.

The second began behind a wall no Valerius record acknowledged.

The moment Arin approached, the silver tree appeared.

«ACTIVE FOUNDER DETECTED.»

Aldric stopped.

Vaelor’s expression sharpened.

Lucan stared.

The wall opened.

Beyond it stood an enormous circular chamber.

At its center floated a black sphere.

Elysium access core.

Around it stood six people.

Not Coalition.

Not Valerius.

Not Guild.

All wore white masks.

One had a hand pressed against the sphere.

Arin’s System immediately reacted.

«HOSTILE ROOT OPERATORS DETECTED.

NUMBER:

SIX.

AUTHORITY:

ADMINISTRATOR DERIVED.»

The masked figure nearest the sphere turned.

"Founder Fourteen."

Arin raised the sidearm.

"Stop."

The figure laughed.

"Still giving orders."

"Yes."

"We aren’t Seraphine."

"Good."

Arin aimed at the access core.

"Then you have less reason to assume I’m patient."

The masked figure’s head tilted.

"You won’t fire."

Arin fired.

Everyone moved.

The energy round struck the access core’s outer stabilizer.

Black light exploded.

The six operators shouted.

The gate percentage dropped.

«ROOT GATE:

58% → 41%.»

The masked leader stared.

Arin lowered the weapon slightly.

"That was a warning shot."

Lucan looked at him.

"You shot the ancient interdimensional artifact."

"Correct."

Vaelor whispered:

"I like him less every minute."

Aldric said nothing.

But something about his expression looked dangerously close to pride.

Arin ignored it.

"Hands away from the core."

The operators did not move.

Then one smiled beneath his mask.

"We only needed fifty percent."

Arin’s expression hardened.

The sphere cracked open.

Not breaking.

Opening.

A vertical line of darkness formed.

Cold air poured through.

The System flashed.

«ROOT TRANSIT:

ESTABLISHED.»

Something stepped through.

A woman.

Not Seraphine.

Young.

Perhaps nineteen.

White hair.

Black eyes.

Bare feet.

She wore a simple gray dress.

Nothing about her looked threatening.

That made Arin immediately suspicious.

The six operators dropped to their knees.

"Welcome, Archivist."

Lucan went still.

Vaelor’s face changed.

Aldric raised his sword.

The young woman looked around.

Then at Arin.

Her black eyes widened.

"Fourteen."

She smiled.

Not cruelly.

Warmly.

Like meeting an old friend.

"You look exactly like him."

Arin’s sidearm remained steady.

"Like who?"

The woman looked toward his face.

"Cael."

Silence.

She stepped away from the gate.

The masked operators remained kneeling.

Arin did not.

"Name."

She smiled.

"Archivist Nera."

"Purpose."

"Retrieval."

"Of?"

Her eyes moved toward Lucan.

Then Aldric.

Then Vaelor.

Finally back to Arin.

"The surviving Elysium bloodline."

Arin’s expression hardened.

"No."

Nera blinked.

"I haven’t explained."

"Didn’t need to."

Her smile returned.

"You really are his grandson."

"Apparently."

Nera looked toward the sidearm.

"Do you intend to shoot me?"

"If necessary."

"I came peacefully."

Arin looked toward the six masked operators.

"They invaded my former home."

"Former?"

"Yes."

Aldric’s expression tightened behind him.

Nera noticed.

Interesting.

She looked toward the Duke.

"Then this is the father."

Aldric stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

Nera ignored him.

She looked at Lucan.

"The failed heir."

Lucan smiled.

"Careful."

Then Vaelor.

"The disposable blade."

Vaelor’s mana erupted.

Nera did not even blink.

Finally, back to Arin.

"And the deviation."

Arin’s eyes narrowed.

"There it is."

"What?"

"The reason you’re here."

Nera smiled faintly.

"Yes."

"Lyra."

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

Enough.

Arin felt cold.

"You came for my sister."

"I came for Family Authority."

Same thing.

Wrong answer.

Arin raised the weapon fully.

The six operators moved.

Lucan drew his knife.

Aldric’s sword came free.

Vaelor’s mana surged.

Nera raised one hand.

"Wait."

Nobody listened.

Except Arin.

He wanted information.

"Talk quickly."

Nera looked at him.

"Seraphine believes Lyra is an error."

"I know."

"She is wrong."

That changed things.

Arin did not lower the weapon.

"Continue."

"Family Authority did not malfunction."

Nera’s black eyes seemed almost excited.

"It evolved."

Lucan’s expression sharpened.

"How?"

Nera looked toward the access core.

"Because Project Elysium spent three thousand years without true family."

Silence.

"The System adapted around isolation."

She turned back.

"Then you arrived with someone you would sacrifice Elysium itself to protect."

Cabin Zero.

Arin’s refusal.

The authority increase.

Family Core integration.

Everything connected.

Nera continued.

"Lyra isn’t breaking the System."

Her smile widened.

"She’s teaching it something it forgot."

Aldric looked confused.

Vaelor looked impatient.

Lucan understood.

Arin did too.

"What?"

Nera answered softly.

"How to become a home instead of a machine."

For one second, Arin almost lowered the weapon.

Then Nera ruined it.

"Which is why the Archive requires her."

Arin’s expression became completely cold.

"No."

Nera sighed.

"Founder—"

"No."

"You don’t understand the scale—"

"Then explain from where you’re standing."

Her eyes narrowed.

"You won’t even consider—"

"No."

Lucan smiled faintly.

He knew that tone.

Nera finally stopped smiling.

"You are willing to risk the Ark network for one child."

Arin’s voice remained flat.

"I’ve had this conversation before."

"Millions may depend on this."

"Find another solution."

"There may not be one."

"Then look harder."

Nera stared at him.

That was the exact principle Arin had written into the Covenant.

No easy sacrifice.

No person turned into a resource simply because the numbers were convenient.

Nera’s expression hardened.

"You truly are dangerous."

Arin smiled faintly.

"Now we’re getting somewhere."

The six operators rose.

A warning filled his visor.

«ROOT GATE:

63%.

ADDITIONAL TRANSIT SIGNATURES DETECTED.»

Arin looked toward the sphere.

More were coming.

Nera followed his gaze.

"You cannot stop the Archive."

"Maybe."

Arin opened a private channel.

"EVE."

Static.

Then:

"Listening."

Good.

The access core had created a temporary link.

"Can you see my location?"

"Yes."

"Can you isolate this core from the Valerius foundation?"

A pause.

"With Builder-01 and remote fabrication assistance."

"Time?"

"Nine minutes."

Nera’s eyes narrowed.

She couldn’t hear EVE.

Good.

"Do it."

Arin ended the channel.

Nera looked toward him.

"What did you just order?"

Arin holstered the sidearm.

Lucan stared.

"Arin?"

Aldric tightened his grip.

Vaelor smiled.

Nera looked confused.

That was exactly what Arin wanted.

He looked toward the six operators.

"Everyone out."

Nera frowned.

"You surrendered?"

"No."

Arin pointed toward the ceiling.

"I’m giving you nine minutes."

"For what?"

"To leave."

Nera laughed.

The gate widened.

Another shadow moved behind it.

Arin looked at her.

"You opened a door beneath someone else’s house."

His combat suit began feeding structural data across his visor.

Load-bearing columns.

Foundation lines.

Vault geometry.

The access chamber sat beneath the ancestral wing.

Old.

Heavy.

Fragile after the root activation.

Arin smiled.

"That was your mistake."

Lucan suddenly understood.

His eyes widened.

"You wouldn’t."

Arin looked toward him.

"I absolutely would."

Aldric frowned.

"What?"

Lucan laughed.

A real laugh.

"He is going to collapse the ancestral hall."

Aldric stared at Arin.

"You’re going to what?"

"Not the hall."

Arin pointed downward.

"The entire vault section."

The Duke’s face went pale.

"That contains six centuries of family history."

Arin looked at him.

"And?"

Aldric stopped.

Vaelor began laughing now.

Nera’s expression changed.

"You would destroy an Elysium access core."

"No."

Arin smiled faintly.

"I’m going to bury it."

The System timer appeared.

«REMOTE FOUNDATION SEVERANCE:

08:31.»

Nera’s calm finally cracked.

"Founder."

"Eight minutes."

The masked operators looked toward her.

The gate continued widening.

Something large moved on the other side.

Arin turned toward Aldric.

"Evacuate everyone above this section."

The Duke stared at him.

For one second, Arin saw the old House Valerius reflected in his father’s face.

Legacy.

Pride.

History.

Centuries of possessions.

Then Aldric closed his eyes.

When he opened them again:

"Roland!"

The knight answered through the corridor.

"Yes, my lord!"

"Clear the ancestral wing!"

Arin looked at his father.

Aldric met his eyes.

"Seven minutes?"

Arin nodded.

Aldric drew his sword.

"Then let’s make them expensive."

Lucan grinned.

Vaelor rolled his injured shoulder.

Nera looked from one to another.

Her expression became cold.

"So this is your answer."

Arin activated his emergency shield.

"No."

The first masked operator attacked.

Arin stepped aside.

Lucan’s knife flashed.

Aldric’s sword ignited with silver mana.

Vaelor laughed as golden power flooded the chamber.

Arin looked directly at Nera.

"This is me buying eight minutes."

And the vault erupted into battle.
